Sarah Palin’s defamation case against New York Times thrown out

The former vice-presidential candidate has her case against the New York Times thrown out.

A federal judge has dismissed former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s defamation case against the New York Times newspaper.

Mrs Palin had sued the Times after it published an editorial, which she claimed linked her to the 2011 shooting of 19 people.

The newspaper had previously apologised and corrected the article within a day.

“Negligence this may be; but defamation of a public figure it plainly is not,” Judge Jed Rakoff wrote in his decision.

The editorial in question was published earlier this year, after a gunman opened fire on Republican congressmen during baseball practice Washington DC.

The Times editorial, in discussing links between violence and “heated political rhetoric” cited a map published by Sarah Palin’s political action committee, which it said featured crosshairs “targeting” 20 Democrat politicians.

Those included Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who was seriously injured in the 2011 shooting.

But the newspaper later clarified those crosshairs were centred on electoral districts, not photos of individual people, and issued a correction saying there was no established link between the committee’s published material and the violence.

Singer Taylor Swift wins groping trial against former radio DJ

POP superstar Taylor Swift has won a sexual assault lawsuit against a former radio DJ she accused of groping her before a gig.

A federal court judge in Denver allowed her complaint that David Mueller had fondled her buttocks during a photo opportunity in the city’s Pepsi Center arena in 2013.

The pop star broke down in tears during the closing arguments in her civil trial.

She turned away from the public gallery to wipe her eyes as Gabriel McFarland, the lawyer for David Mueller, questioned whether his client would have any reason to assault the star.

“I don’t know what kind of person grabs or gropes a music superstar, but it’s not that guy,” Mr McFarland told the federal court in Denver.

He repeatedly said the singer was wrong in her assertion that Mr Mueller had stuck his hand under her skirt and “grabbed her bare ass cheek” during a meet-and-greet before Swift’s gig at the Pepsi Centre.

The singer’s mother, Andrea Swift, had tears in her eyes during the session as she handed her daughter tissues.

Australia has a sexual assault problem. We need to stop looking the other way

It has been a momentous week for sexual assault and abuse survivors in this country.

There has been shock and outrage with the release of the results of the Human Rights Commission survey in relation to sexual assault and harassment. However, of all the emotions that have been expressed, surprise should not be one of them. What the report has done is confirm what universities, advocates, commentators and society at large have known for so long.

The findings into sexual assaults on campuses provide a frightening insight into the numbers and types of assaults present within this institution. But it’s not only these institutions. It is our workplaces and our society as a whole.

Now the blame game is starting. It’s the universities that have allowed this to fester, it’s the colleges that have failed to enforce the harassment policies, etc etc.

Sexual assault support services:

  • ANU Counselling Centre: (02) 6125 2442 (9:00am – 1:00pm and 2:00pm – 4:40pm)
  • Canberra Rape Crisis Centre: (02) 6247 2525 (7:00am – 11:00pm)
  • National university support line: 1800 572 224 (until November 30, 2017)
  • 1800 RESPECT: 1800 737 732
  • Lifeline: 131 114
  • Beyond Blue: 1300 224 636

Again, this should not come as a surprise, since in the past we’ve blamed sporting bodies, celebrities, corporate executives, the judiciary, churches, teachers and the ADF. I think we’ve probably all had a fair slog at most institutions.

Sydney beats St Kilda at SCG by 42 points, as Hawthorn, Melbourne, Bulldogs and Essendon win

Sydney Swans beat the Saints for 10th win in 11 games, Hawthorn beats Freo in the west and Melbourne, the Bulldogs and the Bombers earn important victories. Look back at all the scores and stats.

Sinclair the star as Sydney downs Saints

The Sydney Swans have continued their great run of form with a thumping 42-point win over St Kilda at the SCG.

The Swans began their year 0-6, but that is barely a memory now with John Longmire’s men producing a high-intensity performance to win their 10th game in the last 11 14.17 (101) to 9.5 (59) in front of their home fans.

The Saints never led on a disappointing night where the visitors found it extremely difficult to get the ball inside their forward 50.

With the Swans missing injured forward Sam Reid, St Kilda targeted Sydney star forward Lance Franklin, but it was Reid’s replacement Callum Sinclair who dominated near goal.

Chinese Navy spy ship rattles Talisman Sabre war games off Queensland coast

A high-tech Chinese spy ship has been spotted off the Queensland coast monitoring joint military exercises between Australia and the United States, in what Defence officials have described as an “unfriendly” and “provocative” act.

The ABC can reveal the Auxiliary General Intelligence (AGI) vessel from the People’s Liberation Army was sighted by the Defence Force in international waters during this month’s Talisman Sabre war games.

The Type 815 Dongdiao-class AGI vessel is fitted with advanced communications systems designed to eavesdrop on other militaries.

In a statement to the ABC, Defence confirmed the spy ship had “been operating off the north-east coast of Australia” during the joint military exercises.

“The Chinese vessel has remained outside Australian territorial waters but inside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone in the Coral Sea,” the department said.

“Exercise Talisman Sabre is currently taking place in the vicinity. The vessel’s presence has not detracted from the exercise objectives,” it added.

Koala habitat in northern NSW destroyed by logging, environmentalists claim

A koala habitat 50 per cent larger than the Royal National Park has been destroyed by logging near Coffs Harbour, a new conservation report reveals.

The report titled Clearing Koalas Away by conservationist Dailan Pugh, says more than 23,000 hectares of koala habitat near Coffs Harbour has been “virtually cleared”.

“They’re hitting them really hard. We’re looking at about 40 per cent of koala habitat in state forests,” he said.

“Their own modelling is showing these areas are important but they’re ignoring that.”

Mr Pugh, an environmentalist for over 40 years, sourced the forestry data under freedom of information (FOI) legislation, in a bid to measure logging against known koala habitats.

Last year, then-environment minister Mark Speakman admitted “intensive harvesting” on the North Coast was “not consistent” with regulations, and said the Environment Protection Authority was investigating.

An EPA spokesperson declined to answer questions, but said “current rules are over 15 years old and lack clarity in important areas, including intensive harvesting”.

Recent studies suggest less than 9,000 koalas survive on the North Coast, a 50 per cent decline in the past 20 years.

Wildfires rage along Croatian Adriatic coast

Firefighters in Croatia and Montenegro have been struggling to contain wildfires that have erupted along the Adriatic coast in the two countries at the height of the tourism season.

In Croatia, the blazes have spread over several locations along the coast and on the islands, engulfing pine forests and low shrubbery in extremely dry and windy weather.

Near the coastal town of Sibenik, a fire almost reached houses, but firefighting planes managed to stop the flames from spreading any further. Thick smoke has closed down the main road in the area.

More fires have been reported further north, near the town of Pula, and on the islands of Pag and Vir.

In Montenegro, strong winds hampered efforts to battle several fires along the coast and near the capital, Podgorica.
