#Perth court jails Ex-Docker for six months

FORMER Fremantle Dockers forward Shane Yarran could be released from prison as early as this week after he was sentenced to the minimum six months and one day behind bars over a high-speed chase.

The 28-year-old led officers on a chase after he was seen speeding through Gosnells in a Hyundai hatch just after midnight on May 24.

After reaching speeds of 125km/h in a 60km/h zone, Yarran abandoned the moving car and let it roll across four lanes of traffic.

He fled on foot and was found by a police dog lying under bushes in the front yard of a nearby house.

Yarran has been in prison since his arrest and was jailed in Perth Magistrate’s Court this morning for the mandatory minimum of six months and one day for reckless driving to escape pursuit.

With time already served, he will be eligible for parole later this week.

Yarran was handed a concurrent three-month jail term for failing to stop and was fined almost $5000 for a string of other charges, including driving without a licence, breaching bail and breaching a violence restraining order.

The court was told Yarran breached an order that was put in place to protect his partner in January when he stood on Spencer Road in Thornlie and told her to hand over his child.

Yarran, who had taken meth and prescription drugs, was acting erratically and repeatedly abused and swore at officers before he was taken to hospital.

The month before he was arrested over the chase, Yarran was photographed driving his mother’s car at 54km/h over the speed limit.

Chief Magistrate Steven Heath said Yarran was lucky to have the support of his partner, his family and the football community.

He said Yarran’s case was “all the more disappointing” because he turned his life around after he was jailed for six years in 2009 for burglary charges, but relapsed after his football career took off.

Wyong shooting: Man dead, another injured following incident on Central Coast

ONE man is dead and another has a hand wound following a shooting on the Central Coast this afternoon.

The 22-year-old was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics who rushed to Warner St, Wyong, but he died at the scene.

Another man, aged 28, was also treated for a gunshot wound and has been taken to hospital.

Police from Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command have shut down the intersection of Ithome St and Warner Ave as they scour the scene for evidence or bullet casings.

Afternoon bus services have been diverted away from the area.

A Westpac Rescue Helicopter landed in the car park of Wyong Memorial Swimming Pool to try and get immediate help to the men.

Police have swarmed the quiet neighbourhood and cordoned off the street.

Former Fremantle Dockers Shane Yarran arrested over Gosnells chase

FORMER Fremantle Dockers forward Shane Yarran has appeared in court this morning, after being arrested overnight following an alleged high speed pursuit and eventual takedown by a police dog.

Mr Yarran, 27, was charged after he allegedly failed to stop for police in Gosnells early this morning.

Police said they were conducting patrols in the Gosnells area about 12.10am when they sighted a Hyundai hatch speeding on Muriel Street.

It will be alleged Mr Yarran failed to stop for police and was followed through various streets in Gosnells.

The ex-Docker, who was delisted at the end of last season, allegedly abandoned the vehicle on Fremantle Road and fled on foot.

Police dog Nacho located him lying in bushes in the front yard of house on Eynesford Street in Gosnells, according to a police statement.

Mr Yarran has been charged with Breach of Bail, aggravated failure to stop, Reckless Driving to escape pursuit by Police, No Authority to Drive; and Reckless Driving by Exceeding posted speed limit by 45km/h or more.

Mr Yarran did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody until June 7. The vehicle was impounded for 28 days.

Sydney firefighters free boy from toy vending machine

Not much can come between a child and their favourite toy.

But this three-year-old took things to a whole new level, getting himself stuck inside a soft toy vending machine.

The boy had to be rescued by firefighters after wiggling his way inside the claw machine and becoming trapped.

Despite the claustrophobic experience, firefighters said the boy was having ‘the time of his life’ inside and appeared to be in no rush to get back out.

The boy’s family were having a drink at The Australian Hotel and Brewery at Rouse Hill in Sydney’s west on Anzac Day when he clambered into the skill tester machine.

The boy’s mother called in firefighters after it became clear the boy – who remained calm throughout the ordeal – could not work out how to get back out.

Captain David Richards of 083 Riverstone Fire and Rescue told the Daily Telegraph that the boy said he ‘felt good’ and happily took a drink of cold water from rescuers as he waited to be freed.

‘When we arrived, we found the boy had crawled through the hole in the machine but was enjoying himself, playing with the toys. He was not distressed,’ Captain Richards said.

‘We then used our rapid intervention kit which has door-busting tools to break open the door to the vending machine to take him out.

‘This is the first time we have rescued someone from a vending machine though we had done rescues on someone’s hand stuck inside.’

Colin Barnett: Pipeline, “nation-building” gas pipeline to link to the east

FORMER WA premier Colin Barnett has broken his silence to make a passionate call for a “nation-building” gas pipeline to link the east and west coasts of Australia.

Mr Barnett, who has been keeping a low profile since losing the March election, said political leaders in the east had failed to grasp an obvious solution to their energy crisis.

“I just find it ludicrous that we have gas shortages on the east coast and we have this world-class gas resource on Australia’s west coast and we’re not using it for Australia,” he told The Sunday Times.

“Maybe, if anybody wants a real nation-building project we should be looking at transporting that gas across country, as happens in Europe, North America and Russia and everywhere else. There is nothing secret and difficult about building a gas pipeline.”

On the gas pipeline idea, Mr Barnett said it made no sense for the east coast to be looking at other solutions when there was abundant gas here.

“We will be the biggest gas exporter in the form of LNG by the end of this decade,” he said.

“From outside Australia it just looks stupid. We have a gas shortage on the east coast, prices going through the roof, industry pulling out because they don’t have long-term gas supply and (they) are talking about trying to subsidise coal stations when we have this massive resource the rest of the world is buying and we are not using it ourselves (apart from in WA).”
