THE thing about Sofia Coppola is she’s interested in the stories of women, specifically privileged, young, white women.

That’s been the case since her debut with the wistful The Virgin Suicides, through Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere and to The Bling Ring.

It’s her fascination with these emotionally-isolated female characters on the cusp of womanhood that has led to accusations against Coppola as being kind of one-note, even if her films are, undoubtedly, technical marvels that are beautiful to look at.

In her defence, a lot of filmmakers have a narrow field of interest, not everyone aspires to Kubrickian genre-hopping.

So if you’re a fan of Coppola’s work, her perspective and her voice, you’ll love The Beguiled. If you’ve found her movies grating or only really responded to Lost in Translation, her most accessible film, then this might not be for you.

Tripoli death toll mounts as heavy battles continues between rival factions

Heavy battles continues to rage in Tripoli as rival factions duel for control of the Libyan capital. The assault on the UN-backed government is led by a Misrata commander whose success in the anti-Gadaffi rebellion was secured by the 2011 NATO intervention.

Clashes persisted in Tripoli Saturday between militias loyal the self-proclaimed National Salvation Government (GNC) and forces loyal to the internationally-recognized Presidential Council (PC) which presides over the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA).

Fierce fighting erupted on Friday after the GNC’s militia’s top commander, Salah Badi, launched an attack on the GNA-allied Central Security militia in an attempt to recapture parts of the capital, the Tripoli Herald reported.

Israeli air strikes on Iranian ammunition supply depot near Damascus Airport

MULTIPLE Israeli air strikes have struck in Syria’s capital.

The airstrikes hit an ammunition depot operated by the Lebanese Hezbollah group near Damascus International Airport, a regional intelligence source told Reuters.

Commercial and military cargo planes from Tehran, Iran’s capital, regularly supplied weapons to the Hezbollah that were then stored in the depot.

Tehran, a major regional ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, regularly sends weapons by air, the source who requested anonymity said, without giving further details.

The arms are then used by an array of Iranian backed militias, led by Hezbollah, which have thousands of fighters engaged in some of the toughest fronts against Syrian rebels, the source claimed.

Israel’s Intelligence Minsiter Israel Katz on radio said that the air strikes were “compatible with Israel’s policy.”

The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdurrahman, says the explosion in the early hours of Thursday was heard across the capital, jolting residents awake.

Activist-operated Diary of a Mortar, which reports from Damascus, said that the explosion was followed by flames rising above the area, indicating the strikes had been successful. A pro-government site Damascus Now said the explosion was near the city’s Seventh Bridge, which leads to the airport road.

Citing local sources, Al-Masdar News said there were five air strikes in the vicinity of the airport.

Pro-Hezbollah TV said the blast near fuel tanks and warehouses adjacent to the airport were probably caused by an Israeli air strike.

Syria is in the sixth year of a bloody civil war pitting the government of President Assad and his allies against opposition forces that has left more than 400,000 people dead.

The explosion comes a day after France said that the chemical analysis of samples taken from a deadly sarin gas attack in Syria earlier this month “bears the signature” Assad’s government and shows it was responsible. Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said France came to this conclusion after comparing samples from a 2013 sarin attack in Syria that matched the new ones. The findings came in a six-page report published Wednesday.

Russia, a close ally of Assad, denounced the report, saying the samples and the fact the nerve agent was used are not enough to prove who was behind it. The United States has also blamed Assad’s government for the April 4 attack. The Trump administration ordered the cruise missile attack on the air base and issued sanctions on 271 people linked to the Syrian agency said to be responsible for producing non-conventional weapons. Syria has strongly denied the accusations.
