Trump rebuked by Republicans after threat to shut down Government over border wall

US President Donald Trump’s fellow Republicans have rebuked him after his threat to shut down the US Government over funding for a border wall rattled markets and cast a shadow over congressional efforts to raise the country’s debt ceiling and pass spending bills.

• Mr Trump has threatened a shutdown if Congress did not agree to fund constructing the wall
• Congress will have about 12 working days when it returns on September 5 to approve spending measures
• White House says Mr Trump will work with Congress to fund the wall because he “ran on it, won on it”

“I don’t think anyone’s interested in having a shutdown,” the top Republican in Congress, House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan, told reporters on Wednesday in Hillsboro, Oregon, where he visited an Intel factory.

Mr Ryan said building a wall along the country’s border with Mexico to deter illegal immigration was necessary, but added that the government did not have to choose between border security and continuing operations.

In a speech on Tuesday, Mr Trump threatened a shutdown if Congress did not agree to fund constructing the wall, a signature promise of his presidential campaign, which added a new complication to Republicans’ months-long struggle to reach a budget deal.

After Mexico rejected a chief part of Mr Trump’s promise — that it would pay for the wall — the President said the United States would fund it initially and be repaid by its southern neighbour. Lawmakers, including many Republicans, have not made that funding a top priority, as some question the necessity of a wall.

Manchester was remote controlled and made by professional ‘This isn’t something you knock up in your shed’

The bomb that killed 22 people in Manchester on Monday is the most sophisticated device set off in Britain since attacks by the IRA, it emerged today.

The explosive, which was packed in a Karrimor backpack and carried into the arena by Salman Abedi, was made by a professional and could have been triggered remotely, investigators believe.

Photos of bloodstained fragments from the device used in Monday night’s attack were leaked last night, shedding more light on how Abedi massacred Ariana Grande fans as they piled out of the UK’s biggest indoor venue.

The 22-year-old suicide bomber appeared to have used a powerful explosive in a metal container, packing bots and nails around it to inflict maximum injuries.

Experts who have analysed the pictures believe the bomb may have been detonated by somebody else – a technique used by terror groups to avoid suicide bombers losing their nerve when it comes to blowing themselves up.

Experts said it was the most sophisticated bomb seen in Britain since the Troubles in Northern Ireland and could have been set off remotely or by a small detonator held by Abedi.

Pictures of fragments of the device, first published by the New York Times, came just hours after the UK Government issued a warning to US authorities not to release details of the terror investigation.

The leaked photos show the remains of a small handheld detonator used to explode the bomb, which contained nails, nuts and bolts.

Cassie Sainsbury: Colombian police were tipped off Australian woman could be carrying cocaine

Colombian police have said they were tipped off Australian woman Cassandra Sainsbury could be carrying drugs out of the country, adding the cocaine’s intended destination could work against her.

Ms Sainsbury was arrested on April 12 at Bogota’s international airport after an X-ray machine detected 5.8 kilograms of cocaine hidden in 18 different packages stashed in her luggage.

The 22-year-old was preparing to board a flight to London on her way back to Australia.

Her family contends she was set up, but Colombian police said her arrest was undistinguishable from a growing number of drug cases involving foreigners.

“In this case, and with information we previously received, we received [information] about a citizen of this nationality [Australian], with an identification, could possibly be a drug mule,” anti-narcotic police ports and airports director Jorge Mendoza said.

“In going through security, we found that she had 18 packets inside her luggage, which even before opening it, we found it covered in plastic.”

Mr Mendoza said he was confident the seizure would lead to jail time, and said the cocaine’s intended destination could also affect Ms Sainsbury’s sentence.

“Depending on the qualities, but we believe that the maximum could be 20 years, and the punishment for the quantity could be between eight to 12 years,” he said.

“Let’s keep in mind that of the countries in the world, Australia is the one with the highest per kilogram of cocaine.

“This cocaine that the traveller carried was possibly worth about $US1 million.”

The case has garnered media attention in Australia and her family has raised more than $4,000 online to fund her defence.

Joanna Adams, the daughter of the lawyer representing Ms Sainsbury, told ABC’s AM program her father had given the family some free legal advice.

“She [Ms Sainsbury] has her up and downs, and some days she’s good and some days she’s very bad,” Ms Adams said.

“He [Ms Adams’ father] has been able to give the family some free legal advice into her situation.”

Ms Sainsbury worked as a personal trainer in Adelaide and is a former volunteer firefighter. According to her sister Khala, she was in Colombia on a working holiday.

Khala told The Australian newspaper that while in Colombia, her sister went with a male friend she met before traveling to South America to buy headphones for her upcoming wedding party.

The merchandise was purchased from a contact in a pre-wrapped package, her sister said.

Ms Sainsbury has been transferred to a women’s penitentiary in Bogota.
