SEVERAL people have been injured in what’s been described as a tear gas attack at Frankfurt airport in Germany.
Emergency services responded to the incident, which occurred inside terminal one at 11am on Monday morning local time (7pm AEST).
Police say six people are being treated for breathing difficulties and eye irritation and while the exact cause is unclear, several reports cite a “tear gas attack”.

In an email to Apple employees late Wednesday, chief executive Tim Cook denounced the deadly violence in Charlottesville last weekend, criticized President Trump’s response and pledged to donate $2 million to organizations battling hate groups.
“What occurred in Charlottesville has no place in our country,” the email said, according to BuzzFeed, which obtained a copy. “Hate is a cancer, and left unchecked it destroys everything in its path. Its scars last generations. History has taught us this time and time again, both in the United States and countries around the world.”
Cook joins a long list of prominent business leaders critical of Trump’s response to the throng of white nationalists, neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klan and white supremacy groups that stormed into Charlottesville to protest the planned removal of a Confederate statue. In the chaos, one woman was killed and several injured when a car, allegedly driven by a rally attendee, sped into a crowd of counterprotesters.
The president has said “many sides” were to blame for the violence. So many prominent business leaders took issue with Trump’s position that he was forced to shut down his major business advisory councils after several members resigned.

“We must not witness or permit such hate and bigotry in our country, and we must be unequivocal about it,” Cook said in the email. “I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by standing up for human rights. Equating the two runs counter to our ideals as Americans.”

Civil liberties advocates and many MPs and senators queried the need for the laws, which came into force across all Australian telecommunications providers on April 13.
The laws force telcos to store two years of metadata including the time, date and duration of phone calls, IP addresses, and the names, addresses and billing information of internet and phone account holders.
AFP Commissioner Andrew Colvin revealed on Friday an officer investigating the leaking of ‘sensitive information’ to a journalist had accessed the journalist’s metadata without a warrant.
The Commonwealth Ombudsman is conducting an audit of the matter, but the officer has not faced any disciplinary action.
The journalist has not been informed.
Mr Colvin said by going public with the breach and acknowledging the error, the AFP was being ‘open and honest’ about it.
‘There was no ill-will or malice or bad intent by the officer involved who breached the Act…. It was a mistake that should not have happened,’ he said.
The breach, which occurred earlier this year, involved the time, date and duration of phone calls over a period of about a week, not the calls themselves, Mr Colvin said.
‘The investigator sought and was provided access to the call records of a journalist without the higher authority of a journalist information warrant,’ he said.
Once the breach was discovered, the AFP destroyed all of the material and all investigations relating to the line of inquiry were ceased.
Mr Colvin said the AFP would consider informing the journalist once the investigation was completed.
The commissioner said he was satisfied, after internal checks, that it was the first breach of its kind since the government’s metadata retention laws were put in place.
‘I believe that the public should have full confidence in the police … and this (metadata retention) policy, which was a controversial policy that was debated very widely in parliament and the public at the time,’ he said.
‘I want to underscore how important access to metadata is to police as a fundamental building block of our investigations.’

The 50,000-ton carrier left its berth just after 9am in the northern port city of Dalian, where its predecessor, the Ukrainian-built Liaoning, also underwent extensive refurbishing before being commissioned in 2012, the Ministry of National Defense said.
The new carrier is expected to be formally commissioned sometime before 2020 following the completion of sea trials and the arrival of its full air complement.
Like the 60,000-ton Liaoning, the new carrier is based on the former Soviet Union’s Kuznetsov class design, with a ski jump-style deck for taking off and a conventional oil-fuelled steam turbine power plant.
That limits the weight of payloads its planes can carry, its speed and the amount of time it can spend at sea relative to American nuclear-powered carriers.

They are expected to be closer in size to the U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered 100,000-ton Nimitz class ships, with flat flight decks and catapults to allow planes to launch with more bombs and fuel aboard.
According to Chinese reports, the new carrier will carry 24 Shenyang J-15 fighters, based on the Russian Sukhoi Su-33, along with 12 helicopters for anti-submarine warfare, airborne early warning and rescue operations. That compares to 85-90 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters carried by a Nimitz-class carrier.
The new carrier is part of an ambitious expansion of the Chinese navy, which is projected to have a total of 265-273 warships, submarines and logistics vessels by 2020, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Naval Analysis.
That compares with 275 deployable battle force ships presently in the U.S. Navy, China’s primary rival in the Asia Pacific.
