Lewis Hamilton to start in pole position at #F1 Chinese GP REPORT

Lewis Hamilton drove through the fog of Shanghai to claim pole position for Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix.

The Brit was almost two hundredths of a second quicker than Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, who will start second. Valtteri Bottas, of Mercedes, was third fastest, and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen fourth.

With his job done, Hamilton climbed scaffolding on the pit straight to salute the fans, who waved Union Jacks back at him.

It is turning into a Mercedes-Ferrari duel at the front, with the rest way back. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, fifth quickest, was nearly a second slower than Raikkonen.

The hope now is that the grand prix is on, rather than cancelled because of bad weather that may prevent the medical helicopter taking off. That was the case during practice on Friday, and more bad weather is anticipated for the race.

Even on Saturday when conditions were among the best they have been in recent days the ever-present smog impaired visibility.

The biggest shunt of qualifying was suffered by Sauber’s Antonio Giovinazzi, the 23-year-old Italian who is standing in for the unfit Pascal Wehrlein. Palmer said: ‘I was miles up on previous time so I think my lap was enough for Q2. I couldn’t believe it because the car has been feeling good this weekend. I had a flat spot on the first run which affected me.’

Palmer was due to be investigated by the stewards for speeding under the yellows but was confident he would be cleared. ‘I lost a second in the final sector,’ said the Brit. ‘If they look at the data I think they will see I was cruising across the line.’

Fernando Alonso drove well in his grotty McLaren-Honda, qualifying 13th while his team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne was 16th. ‘I’m driving like an animal,’ Alonso said over the radio…

Pirates Hijack Freighter off Somalia’s Coast

Somali officials say pirates have hijacked a ship off the coast of the Horn of Africa nation. It is thought to be the first hijacking of a large commercial vessel there in about three years.

One official in the semiautonomous state of Puntland said the incident occurred on Monday. The official said over two dozen men boarded the merchant ship off Somalia’s northern coast.

Another official in Puntland said the ship is a Sri Lankan-flagged freighter and was being moved toward the coast. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

A spokeswoman for the European Union Naval Force operation off Somalia, Flt. Lt. Louise Tagg, confirmed that an incident involving an oil tanker had occurred off the coast of Somalia and an investigation was underway.

US lawyers ‘ready to litigate’ Trump over new ‘anti-Muslim’ travel ban

Donald Trump’s newly-reworded executive order to clamp down on immigrants from Muslim-majority countries has been declared equally discriminatory as the first ban and could still be challenged in the courts, according to lawyers.

The President’s new order scraps certain provisions of the first one, such as banning people from Iraq, indefinitely suspending Syrian refugees and ensnaring people with valid visas and green cards, but the “intent remains the same”, according to Karen Tumlin, legal director of the National Immigration Law Center.

“So, Muslim Ban 1.0 has been revoked and replaced with this, equally discriminatory & unlawful version 2.0,” she wrote on Twitter.

The order has sent a signal that it is “open season” for denigrating civil rights, said Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg of the Legal Aid Justice Center. He fought to protect his clients from the first ban, including two Yemeni brothers who had been put on a return flight to Ethiopia as soon as they landed in the US last month.
