Australian Ninja Warrior is extremely fun to watch – is it really a fair game?

In the first episode of Australian Ninja Warrior, host Rebecca Maddern said of the competition: “Men and women compete on the same course. It’s all about ability and agility. It’s the great equaliser.”

In some ways, she’s right. Ninja Warrior has been a great equaliser – for spectators.

In the show – the first Australian spin-off of the long-running Japanese show Sasuke – competitors attempt an increasingly difficult obstacle course, most of which is held over pools of water. If any part of that contestant touches the water, they are out.

In the heat episodes, 50 competitors attempted the course, with 18 people who got the “farthest and fastest” – either by completing the course or making it through the most obstacles in the least time – going through to the semi finals, the first of which aired on Tuesday. The final obstacle of the heats was the 4.5-metre, almost vertical “warped wall”.

The semi-finals have an even more challenging course, and the grand final, which will be broadcast on Tuesday night, is so difficult that in the show’s history – not only in Japan but also in the US, UK and other countries where it’s been syndicated – only seven people have managed to complete it.

Urgent warning after Aldi product toxic lead find

Tens of thousands of Australians could potentially be poisoned after purchasing a popular discount Aldi kitchen fixture.

The Chinese-made spiral spring mixer taps, sold for just $79.99 in Aldi stores, have been found to produce water containing more than 15 times the safe level of lead.

The toxic taps are estimated to have been installed in more than 12,000 homes across Australia, and industry experts say there’s great cause for concern for consumers who use the product.

“That’s 12,000 homes that have been installed. How many people live in those homes? How many people could be at risk of contamination?” Penny Cornah, Master Plumbers Australian national secretary told the Courier Mail.

“This is huge.”

Tests by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) uncovered the disturbing findings – contrary to previous tests by Melbourne’s IAPMO R&T Oceana, who gave the product the initial go-ahead.

“Everything we have on file indicates the product fully complies. It looks 100 per cent kosher,” said IAPMO technical adviser Glenn Tate.

According to IAPMO, the product was initially found to contain 9.5 times under the safe limit of lead, so the new findings represent a stark jump.

As for the potential damage of this slip-up, lead interferes with production of the protein in blood that transports oxygen, causing shortness of breath during physical activity.

Very high levels of lead can also be fatal if consumed by humans…

Hanoi plan to ban motorbikes by 2030 to combat pollution

City councillors say they want to wean Hanoi off motorbikes in favour of public transport.

Hanoi – a city of five million motorbikes – is planning on banning the popular two-wheeled transport by 2030.

The city council voted for the ban almost unanimously, hoping to unclog roads and reduce soaring levels of pollution.

The council has also promised to increase public transport so that half the population are using it by 2013, instead of the current 12%.

But some residents think it very unlikely the bikes will go for good.

Council officials decided to put “immediate management measures” in place after a report found the number of motorbikes in Hanoi was set to grow at an “alarming” rate. Some studies suggest there are already as many as 2,500 motorbikes per kilometre.

According to the non-governmental group GreenID, the city recorded 282 days of “excessive” levels of PM2.5, which is harmful to human health, last year.

But despite this, resident Ngo Ngoc Trai told the BBC he did not think the plan would work.

“The city is too crowded while public transport hardly exists,” he said. “For example, there is no underground system in Vietnam. Only in June did Hanoi pilot the first two-storey bus in some routes.

UPDATE Drayton Manor Canyon horror: Girl, 11, dies in front of ‘screaming’ youngsters

AN 11-year-old girl has died after falling from a river rapids ride in front of her horrified pals during a school trip to Drayton Manor theme park. The youngster was reportedly “dragged under by the rapids” after falling from the six-seater boat while “standing up to swap seats”.

Visitors described hearing cries and screams from the rapids-style ride after the girl fell into the choppy 5ft-deep water at the park in Tamworth, Staffs, yesterday afternoon.

The girl was on a school trip to Drayton Manor park when tragedy struck

It is believed the girl’s teacher, from Jameah Girls Academy in Leicester, was on the ride with her and four of her classmates when tragedy struck.

It is thought the youngster stood up to “swap seats” but toppled over the side as the vessel crashed into waves halfway through the five-minute ride.

One mum, whose child was on the school trip, said last night: “My daughter said there were four other girls on the same boat with the girl.

“When the girl got up to change seats it hit a rock and she got knocked out of the boat and fell in the water and the water currents dragged her in. For that reason they couldn’t see her after she fell in.

“The kids started screaming and told the staff at the park that their friend has fallen in the water.”

It is understood the girl did not drown but may have hit her head as she fell into the water.

Staff dragged her from the rapids as her screaming friends looked on. She was flown to hospital by air ambulance but could not be saved.

An emotional George Bryan, company director of the theme park, said he was “truly shocked and devastated” by the girl’s death.

The visibly shaken boss said in a statement yesterday: “It is with great sadness we have to report that a young girl has passed away at Birmingham Children’s Hospital following an incident on one of the park’s water rides.

“Our staff were alerted that an 11-year-old girl had entered the water.

“Trained park staff were immediately on the scene attending to the patient and West Midlands Air Ambulance arrived and airlifted her to the hospital.

“We are all shocked and devastated and our thoughts are with her family and friends at this tremendously difficult time.”

Visitors told how they heard crying and screaming coming from the main entrance of the ride.

Genius’ Geoffrey Rush on playing Einstein: ‘Before celebrities were called celebrities…

genius-2.jpg62 years after his death, Albert Einstein remains the most famous scientist on the planet. The world is still Einstein a go-go.  He has made a mark on our consciousness like no other scientist before or since. The landmark image of Einstein, with his shock of “eccentric professor” hair and his tongue sticking out, graces T-shirts and posters in every corner of the world. Time magazine’s Frederic Golden says that Einstein is, “A cartoonist’s dream come true.”

The physicist has inspired pop songs (the aforementioned “Einstein a Go-Go” and “E=MC2”), plays (Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Albert Einstein: The Practical Bohemian), operas (Philip Glass’s Einstein on the Beach) and films (Insignificance and IQ). Yoda’s eyes on Star Wars are even modelled on Einstein’s.

He has become a global icon. Not bad for a theoretical physicist whose most celebrated discovery – the Theory of Relativity – is properly understood by only a handful of fellow Nobel Prize winners.
