BREAKING:F-16 jet crashes. Homes evacuated miles from Washington

Homes have been evacuated near Joint Base Andrews in Maryland after an F-16 on a training mission crashed causing a loud explosion and fire at around 9:15am Wednesday.

One pilot ejected from the plane and parachuted down. He was picked up by a military helicopter and taken to hospital and is believed to be safe.

The plane was part of the DC Guard 113th Wing, NBC Washington reported – that’s the same wing used to routinely patrol the skies around Washington.

The pilot was on a training mission for the 113th Wing.

The Wing is used, per a post-9/11 protocol, to patrol the area and intercept planes that enter a ‘safe zone’ around the capital.

They fly 3,000 missions a year – around ten a day – NBC reported.

Veteran Radio 2 broadcaster Brian Matthew has died at the age of 88, the station has announced.

The BBC presenter, who hosted Sounds of the 60s, announced three months ago that he was stepping down from the programme due to ill health.

His family said in a statement: ‘Our beloved Brian Matthew passed away last night.

WA bushfire threat upgraded to emergency

A bushfire in Western Australia’s Goldfields-Esperance region has been upgraded to an emergency warning and is threatening homes.

Shifting winds are pushing the out of control and unpredictable bushfire towards homes in an area bounded by Barook Road, Kings Mill Retreat, Helms Drive and Eleven Mile Beach Road in Helms Estate and in the western part of Pink Lake.

Authorities issued an emergency warning on Wednesday night, upgrading it from a watch and act earlier in the afternoon.

The fire is spreading quickly and people are being advised to leave if it is safe to do so.

Sean Spicer and Stephen Bannon’s poll numbers are even worse than Trump’s

Some really bad numbers.

President Trump’s approval numbers have sunk faster than those of any president in the modern era.

The good news for him is that someone else in politics today has it worse. The bad news is that they are his top spokesman, Sean Spicer, and his top strategist, Stephen K. Bannon.

A new Quinnipiac University poll shows that views of Spicer and Bannon continue to dim alongside Trump’s. Although the two aren’t nearly as well-known as the commander in chief, the people who do know them like them even less than America likes Trump.

Seven in 10 registered voters have heard enough of Spicer to form an opinion. And although 20 percent have a favorable opinion of him, 49 percent have an unfavorable one — nearly 2.5-to-1 negative.

Trump slump: Drop in American tourism is costing US billions

‘Trump slump’ has made bookings fall by a third, says airline boss

The ‘Trump slump’, as it has become known, is alive and well. Since President Trump took office, the numbers show, tourists just aren’t as keen on visiting the United States.

International travel to the US dropped 6.5 per cent in the eight days following the president’s proposed travel ban on January 27 when compared to the same period in 2016, according to travel data company ForwardKeys. Online searches for flights to America also dropped by 17 per cent the same week, said flight app Hopper. And the president of Dubai-based airline Emirates, Sir Tim Clark, confirmed in March that the travel ban, which sought to stop nationals from seven mainly Muslim countries from travelling to the US, immediately triggered a drop in bookings from Dubai by over a third.

All this has resulted in an estimated loss of $185 million in business travel bookings from January 28 to February 4, as calculated by the Global Business Travel Association. The drop-off in tourism is predicted to result in 4.3 million fewer visitors this year, which adds up to a staggering loss of $7.4 billion in revenue for the US…

Armed police surround an apartment block in Sydney after man barricades himself inside

Heavily armed riot officers have surrounded an apartment block in Sydney after a man barricaded himself inside.

A major police operation is currently underway on Hoxton Park Road in Cartwright, a suburb in southwest Sydney, 9News reports.

But it was not immediately clear what sparked the incident.

An NSW Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia: ‘A police operation is currently underway in Hoxton Park.

Rockhampton then and now: Incredible photos show locals battling through 10 METRE high floods after a cyclone that killed eight 99 years ago

The 1918 floods in Rockhampton, Queensland, saw the Fitzroy River hit 10.11m, the highest it has ever been to this day.

Vast swathes of Rockhampton are underwater, with lives at risk after the Fitzroy River burst its banks in the wake of a cyclone.

While this may sound like the current situation in the flood-hit Queensland city, it also describes what residents of Rockhampton faced 99 years ago – when they faced the worst floods in the city’s recorded history.

For five days from January 20, 1918, Rockhampton was pounded by cyclonic winds – just as it has by Cyclone Debbie now.

The biblical weather came after heavy downpours which led the river to break its banks and spill over into the bustling market town.

Despite efforts lay down sandbags, parts of the town were turned into islands as the water covered lower-lying areas, according to the Queensland Historical Atlas.

Trump’s response to Syria gas attack: blame Obama

The scale and horror of Tuesday’s gas attack on civilians in Idlib highlighted the vacuum in the Trump administration’s foreign policymaking: the incident was met first by silence, then by criticism of Barack Obama.

Donald Trump described the attack, which killed scores of victims, including many children, as a direct “consequence” of his predecessor’s Syria policy.

“These heinous actions by the Bashar al-Assad regime are a consequence of the last administration’s weakness and irresolution,” he said in a statement. “President Obama said in 2012 that he would establish a ‘red line’ against the use of chemical weapons and then did nothing.”

Blast in Pakistani city of Lahore kills at least six

A suicide bomber killed at least six people and wounded 18 when he blew himself up near an army vehicle taking part in a census in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Wednesday, officials in the area said.

Punjab government spokesman Malik Ahmed Khan told Geo TV that four soldiers and two civilian bystanders were among the dead.

TV footage showed security personnel blocking off the street around the site of the explosion, close to a market.

The blast, the latest in a series that has killed scores of people in Pakistan since the beginning of the year, follows an attack in Lahore last month that killed at least 13 and wounded dozens more.

Australia Post’s $5.6 million-a-year boss ‘honoured’ to receive his AO medal – after slashing jobs, raising stamp prices and cutting mail runs

Australia Post’s controversial chief executive Ahmed Fahour has received an Order of Australia only months before he leaves his $5.6 million job.

The government postal service boss has tweeted about his latest honour, which comes after an outcry about his salary caused him to step down in July.

‘It’s a wonderful honour to receive an AO medal today from the Victorian Governor on behalf of the GG,’ he said.

Jessica Jones jumps to action in teaser for The Defenders

Jessica Jones jumped into action while riding in an elevator with Daredevil, Luke Cage and Danny Rand in a teaser Tuesday for The Defenders.

The New York City private detective, played by Krysten Ritter, and her fellow superheroes were shown in grainy, black and white security footage in the 16-second trailer titled Midland Circle Security Elevator B.

Jessica sized up Rand, played by Finn Jones, and Daredevil, portrayed by Charlie Cox, as they entered the elevator.

Bad batch of eggs gives 21 people salmonella

At least 21 people were struck down with salmonella caused by a bad batch of eggs at a restaurant.

The outbreak, which left some diners hospitalized, has caused ‘genuine distraught’ to Food Republic’s co-owner Vanessa Lekkas who said the Blackburn restaurant would no longer serve food made with raw egg products.

‘In almost 30 years of working in the industry we’ve never seen this happen,’ Ms Lekkas told The Herald Sun.

‘We get hundreds of boxes delivered each week, and it looks like one of those contained a bad batch of eggs.’

Legends of Tomorrow finale recap: Season 2, episode 17

Wow, what a finale! “Aruba” is pretty much the culmination of all of the great work Legends of Tomorrow has done this season. The season finale takes off like speeding a bullet from the moment it starts and doesn’t stop until its emotional climax. I had a lot of fun watching it and was even moved at times.

We start in Doomworld, Central City, 2017, where Rip has finally restored full power to the Waverider and is ready to reunite with his team. Well, that is, until he discovers that Thawne shrunk the ship. But Rip doesn’t let that stop him. He tracks the Legends down to Nate’s basement by honing in on their radio signal. When he arrives, he finds the Legends licking their wounds, sulking (Nate is responsible for 85 percent of the sulking, which is to be expected since he just watched Vixen die), and preparing to break the number rule of time travel: traveling back to past events they’ve already visited. (I am honestly surprised that none of them made a “We have to go back” Lost joke.) This rule was established in the first season, and it’s a surprise that the writers waited 32 episodes before breaking it. Needless to say, Rip isn’t jazzed about breaking said rule, but THEY HAVE TO GO BACK, KATE! (Sorry)

Man loses both legs and arms at risk after white-tail spider bite

A man has lost both his legs and could have his arms amputated in a Melbourne Hospital after he was bitten by a white-tailed spider in Western Victoria.

Terry Pareja from the Philippines was visiting family in Birchip when he was bitten but did not realise anything was wrong until his foot began swelling the following day.

No doctor was available in the tiny town of 662 people — and by the time he sought medical help on Monday, flesh-eating bacteria had taken hold.
