Ben Cousins’ dad says AFL too soft on drugs

THE father of jailed football star Ben Cousins has called on the AFL to get tougher earlier on players who test positive to illicit drugs, saying the existing penalties for a player’s “first strike” are feather light.

Bryan Cousins visits his son every other week in prison. The Brownlow medallist’s addiction to methamphetamine and other drugs led him to a 12-month prison term this year.

The former West Coast skipper’s problems are explored in a book about the life of Wally Foreman, who died of a heart attack in 2006. Foreman was one of Mr Cousins’ closest friends.

In the book, written by Foreman’s son Glen, Mr Cousins candidly describes how Ben’s substance abuse problems escalated quietly but drastically.

As he prepares to help launch the book today, Mr Cousins saidthat after a decade of experience of the effects of drug addiction, he was convinced a “zero tolerance” policy on drugs in sport would not work.

“Tell me what that is? Because if it is saying anyone who is caught with anything is thrown out of that sport, then what are you going to do with that person when they are gone?

“What can happen … is that they then only associate with other drug users,” he said.

“On the other hand, of the three or four large drug rehab centres, almost all the counsellors there were on drugs themselves at one point. With help and understanding, they are now helping people to get off drugs.”

He said what could help the AFL prevent another outcome like Ben’s would be a tougher response to any player who tested positive to an illicit substance.

Under the AFL’s illicit drugs policy, a player with a first strike receives a $5000 fine while also undergoing counselling and target testing.

“After the first strike, at the moment they hit them with a feather,” Mr Cousins said…

The one day of voting allocated to Port Moresby has now been deferred to Friday…

Myanmar’s military finds crashed plane, bodies: spokesman | SBS News

Myanmar’s military on Thursday said it has found the wreckage of a plane in the Andaman Sea that went missing with more than 120 people on board, including children.

“We have found the plane and some dead bodies this morning about 8.25 am (0155 GMT),” a spokesman for the military’s information team told AFP.

Navy ships and aircraft had been searching since the afternoon when the plane lost contact with air traffic controllers.

Most of those on board were thought to be women and children who were travelling from the southern city of Myeik to Yangon.

“Now they have found pieces of the damaged plane in the sea 136 miles (218 km) away from Dawei city,” said Naing Lin Zaw, a tourism official in Myeik, citing the military and adding that they were still searching the sea.

An air force source confirmed to AFP that a navy search and rescue ship had found debris in the sea an hour’s flight south of Yangon, Myanmar’s commercial capital.

Police have praised the quick actions of a truck driver over Sydney M5 near miss

Police have praised the quick actions of a truck driver who prevented what could have been a “catastrophic” collision with a school bus in Sydney, with moves now underway to charge the bus driver.

Frightening footage released by police shows the bus – carrying 15 students – pulling onto the M5 into the path of the semi-trailer after 7.30am on Thursday.

The truck driver jumped on the brakes with his semi jackknifing and skidding to a halt in a plume of white smoke. The bus continued down the motorway.

“I have no doubt the truck driver’s actions have prevented what could have been a catastrophic motor-vehicle accident,” Detective Inspector Dean Johnstone told AAP on Friday.

Hackers have adapted another NSA cyber weapon, EsteemAudit

Experts fear further waves of cyber attacks may be on the way, as criminals race to re-purpose hacking tools that were stolen from the US National Security Agency and leaked last month.

After WannaCry, a ransomware program based on the leaked NSA exploit EternalBlue that hit hundreds of thousands of machines last week, criminals have adapted another NSA tool called EsteemAudit, security analysts tell the Financial Times.

EternalBlue and EsteemAudit are among several zero-day exploits released last month by a group calling itself the Shadow Brokers, although EternalBlue is believed to be the most powerful among them.

EsteemAudit takes advantage of a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Protocol in Windows 2003 and Windows XP, allowing an attacker to install and execute malicious code, according to an analysis by Fortinet

Microsoft, which no longer supports those versions of Windows, says that the vulnerability does not affect anyone using Windows 7 or any more recent version of the operating system.

The unprecedented WannaCry global cyber attack beginning on Friday has unleashed a new wave of criticism directed at the NSA.

Microsoft Corp President Brad Smith sharply criticized the US government on Sunday for ‘stockpiling’ software flaws that it often cannot protect, citing recent leaks of both NSA and CIA hacking tools.

‘Repeatedly, exploits in the hands of governments have leaked into the public domain and caused widespread damage,’ Smith wrote in a blog post.

‘An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the US military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen.’

Some major technology companies, including Google and Facebook, declined comment on the Microsoft statement.

But some other technology industry executives said privately that it reflected a widely held view in Silicon Valley that the US government is too willing to jeopardize internet security in order to preserve offensive cyber capabilities.

The NSA did not respond to requests for comment.

The NSA and other intelligence services generally aim to balance disclosing software flaws they unearth against keeping them secret for espionage and cyber warfare purposes.

On Monday, senior administration officials defended the government’s handling of software flaws, without confirming the NSA link to WannaCry, the tool used in the global ransomware attack.

‘The United States, more than probably any other country, is extremely careful with their processes about how they handle any vulnerabilities that they’re aware of,’ Tom Bossert, the White House homeland security adviser, said at a press briefing on Monday.

Bunnings employee run over as he tried to stop thieves another worker was attacked in car park terror

The frightening ordeal happened at the hardware store on Milperra Road, Bankstown in Sydney’s southwest at about 2pm on Saturday.

A Bunnings employee has been run over attempting to stop a thief who fled the store while a second employee was assaulted by the man, police say.

It began when a 24-year-old man and 35-year-old woman were approached by store employees as they were exiting the store.

A 57-year-old male store employee was then allegedly assaulted by the man before the pair fled.

The man ran to his car, where three young children were waiting inside while the woman ran to the nearby McDonald’s restaurant car park.

The man then drove his car at a 41-year-old staff member, knocking him to the ground, police say.

He then proceeded to the restaurant car park where he picked up the woman but was followed by the staff member who he had just allegedly ran over, who recorded the car and number plate on his phone.

The couple then got out of the car and struck the man up to 10 times, broke a bottle over his head and stole his phone, before getting back into the car and driving away.

The woman was arrested a short time later when police spotted the car at a shopping centre in Chipping Norton while the man was arrested at a home unit in Mead Street, Chipping Norton.

The three children are now in the care of a family member while a notification has been made  to the Department of Family and Community Services.

The Bunnings employees are said to have only suffered minor injuries.

The 24-year-old man and 35-year-old woman are due to appear in court on Sunday.

4-year-old girl narrowly escapes gunfire at Arizona barbershop

Video released by police show a little girl narrowly escaping gunfire during a recent shooting in Arizona.

Surveillance footage from inside the Paisanos Barber Shop at a strip mall in Chandler captured the terrifying moment.

The video, released by the Chandler Police Department on Wednesday, shows the 4-year-old girl dancing around the shop. She then sits down in a chair against a window facing the street. That’s when gunfire erupts, shattering the window behind her as bullets dart past the girl’s head.

The girl is then seen running away from the window and out of the camera frame.

Police said two rounds came through the glass.

The girl was injured by glass debris but was not shot in the incident, according to ABC affiliate KNXV.

Police said two suspects have been arrested in the case, KNXV reported.

Unvaccinated children WILL be banned from preschools

Unvaccinated children will be banned from being enrolled in childcare centres and preschools across Australia. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull wants to close state loopholes.

All of us desperately want to protect our children and our grandchildren and other people’s children,’ he said.

‘If you don’t vaccinate your child you are not only putting their own life at risk, but you are putting everyone else’s children at risk.’

The prime minister wants the issue of nationally-consistent vaccination laws discussed at the next Council of Australian Governments meeting of state premiers and territory chief ministers in Canberra.

The announcement comes a week after Mr Turnbull slammed One Nation leader Pauline Hanson for likening the federal government’s ‘no jab, no pay’ policy to a dictatorship.
