Four arrested in Sydney over terror plot | Perth Now
“Four men have been taken into custody and are assisting police with their enquiries,” the AFP and NSW Police said in a joint statement following the raids.
Fairfax Media reports the raids were in relation to a terrorist cell “and a bomb plot involving aircraft”.
The Seven Network reports 40 riots squad officers stormed the Surry Hills terrace before the explosives team found a suspicious device.
TV footage shows a man with a bandage on his head and draped in a blanket being led away by authorities.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has been briefed on the progress of the operation by security agency heads.
“These operations are designed to disrupt and prevent plans to undertake terrorist attacks in Australia,” the prime minister said in a statement.
“My number one priority, and that of my government, is the safety and security of all Australians, and the public should be reassured that our security and intelligence agencies are working tirelessly to keep us safe.”
The family who lived in the raided house on Cleveland Street in Surry Hills has been described as “perfectly nice and normal people” by a neighbour whose property backs onto theirs.
“We knew them to say hello to and they seemed nice,” the woman in her early 30s, who didn’t want to be identified, told AAP.
An elderly couple lived in the home, the neighbour said, and they had adult children.
The neighbour came home while the raid was underway and said there were “heaps” of police at the scene.
Cleveland Street remains closed in both directions in Surry Hills between Elizabeth and Crown streets.
“Motorists are advised to avoid the area or allow plenty of extra travel time,” a Transport Management Centre spokesman said in a statement.

Three terror raids carried out across Sydney
The Australian Federal Police conducted three terrorist raids across Sydney on Saturday afternoon.
The raids, conducted by the Sydney Joint Counter Terrorism team, took place in Surry Hills, Lakemba and Wiley Park. The operations are part of an ongoing investigation.
Fairfax Media understands the raids relate to a terrorist cell and a bomb plot involving aircraft.
It is believed that at least one man has been taken into custody as a result of the raids.
The bomb squad is at the scene of the Surry Hills raid on Cleveland Street, which remains closed in both directions between Elizabeth Street and Baptist Street.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said in a statement he had been “closely briefed” about the operation which involves the AFP, ASIO and the NSW police.
“These operations are designed to disrupt and prevent plans to undertake terrorist attacks in Australia,” Mr Turnbull said.
“I have been kept closely briefed on the progress of the operations by the heads of our relevant security agencies.
“However, as the operations are ongoing, it is inappropriate to provide further detail at this stage.”
Mr Turnbull said his number one priority is the safety and security of all Australians.
“The public should be reassured that our security and intelligence agencies are working tirelessly to keep us safe.”

Most electric vehicles (EVs) use lithium-ion batteries, the same technology which powers smartphones, tablets and laptops.
As car makers around the globe race to meet new EV targets, demand for batteries has driven lithium exports from WA as the state now produces more than half of the world’s supply.
Global leaders have been behind the push, with new European emissions legislation forcing car markers to increase their targets and France recently announcing it wanted to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040.
It joins similar targets set by India (2030) and Norway (2025).
The British Government is also set to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2040 as part of a plan to clean up air pollution.
Close but no cigar for Fremantle Dockers in 12-point loss to GWS
Nursing a three-quarter time lead over a serious premiership contender away from home, Fremantle stopped still and were overrun in the final term.
This time it was Greater Western Sydney that erased a 15-point deficit in a blistering fourth quarter, repeating Geelong’s come-from-behind triumph over the Dockers on the port side’s previous interstate trip.
Yet it was another one Fremantle nearly pulled out of the fire in a see-sawing affair.
It took until the 30-minute mark of the final term for the Giants to finally kill off the plucky underdogs, with Josh Kelly nailing a left-foot bullet form the pocket with two minutes left on the clock to seal the 13.20 (98) to 13.8 (86) win.
Everything came up GWS in the final term.
With their top-four spot on the line, the Giants dominated clearances (20-6) to set up a five-goal last quarter.
Kelly’s finish was one of three classy efforts from the boundary, with Tom Scully and Devon Smith also chipping in.
Captain Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale and Stephen Hill had been superb in the middle for Fremantle at the feet of rookie ruckman Sean Darcy, who held his own for most of the day opposed to Dawson Simpson.
But they were outworked and outclassed by Kelly, Dylan Shiel and returning Giants vice-captain Stephen Coniglio in the last quarter…

AGAIN: Kwinana Fwy crash blocks traffic 2nd CRASH
Just 90 minutes after a hatchback left the southbound lanes and rolled south of Thomas Road, emergency crews have again been called out to almost the exact same location.
The second vehicle has also rolled in Anketell, this time roughly 1km north of the Thomas Road exit.
A St John spokesperson said paramedics were still on their way to the scene.
The crash comes after two people were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries from a rollover just before 1pm.
The vehicle was left on its roof after the crash in wet and wild conditions.

Kwinana Freeway at a standstill after vehicle rollover 1km south of the Thomas Road exit
Traffic has come to a complete standstill on the Kwinana Freeway southbound after a car rolled onto its roof.
Police, fire crews and paramedics have rushed to the Anketell scene after the vehicle rolled shortly after 12.30pm on Saturday.
Witnesses say the vehicle remains on its roof about 1km south of the Thomas Road exit.
It is unclear how many people were inside the vehicle and if there are any injuries.
Police have advised the vehicle is blocking traffic.
Main Roads has advised traffic is slow on approach, with motorists asked to seek an alternative route if possible.
Emergency crews were also called out to a separate crash in Midland on the Great Eastern Highway just minutes after the freeway rollover.
A car has slammed into a power pole at the Ferguson Street intersection.
Luckily the driver escaped serious injury.
And three drivers escaped injury in a third crash in Como on Saturday morning when two cars and a bus collided on Canning Highway.

The air is dank, the relentless monsoonal rains outside have seeped through the underground plastered walls and the bespectacled young soldier sighs as he twists his slight but tall frame to enter the dungeon.
Some of the 100 soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines have been killed by what was done here in this cramped space below a house in the city of Marawi; some were friends, all were colleagues and their deaths and the continued conflict weighs heavily on most of the 20-something year old soldiers on the newest ISIS frontline.
In the first four weeks of the insurgency in this once lively city of Marawi on the southern Philippines island of Mindanao, Filipino forces suffered more than 300 casualties many maimed from the sorts of injuries from Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) like the ones that were believed to have been made from this and other hidden dens of death.
A mini bomb factory using eight to 10 inch nails packed into urns and other vessels that can tear a body apart and have hampered forces from retaking the city from the Islamic State backed rebels.
“We weren’t expecting this,” the Filipino soldier Morillo says as his torch lights up the dark corners.

Teen critical after falling four storeys from #Perth apartment block
Police believe the victim, believed to be a 16-year-old boy, and another person had arrived at an apartment building on Mounts Bay Road about 1.30am on Saturday to visit one of the residents.
But they got no answer and the concierge would not let them in.
A police spokesman said it then appeared the pair had decided to climb up the building to access the apartment, but they had climbed up the wrong side of the building.
He said while trying to scale down the building, the victim fell from the fourth floor to the courtyard below. The other climber made his way down and rushed to alert police at a nearby booze bus and an ambulance was called.
The teenager was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries.
A RPH spokesman said on Saturday morning the person was in a critical condition.

The Australian, running an aerodynamic upgrade, was fastest in both sessions, heading Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel by 0.183 seconds in the afternoon.
Lewis Hamilton, trailing Vettel by a point at the top of the championship, was struggling for grip on the fastest super-soft tyres and down in fifth.
But the Mercedes driver was quickest of all on soft tyres early in the session.
Nevertheless, Hamilton did appear to be struggling in the second session. Mercedes said he lacked grip on his qualifying-simulation run on the super-softs and was also off the pace on his race-fuel laps later on.
“It is very close between the top three teams,” said Hamilton. “Today has been really gusty. I got out but I just didn’t finish the laps on the super-soft tyre.”
“Good day, can’t complain,” said Ricciardo. “It’s nice. We brought some updates here and they seem to be working. I do feel like we have gained some grip in the car and I definitely feel we’ve taken a step in the right direction.”
Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas was third fastest overall, 0.2secs off Ricciardo’s ultimate pace and 0.1secs ahead of the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.
Max Verstappen trailed Red Bull team-mate Ricciardo by 0.4secs and was sixth.
Bottas was quickest on the race runs on the soft tyres but Ricciardo led the way on heavy fuel on the super-soft tyre…

US Mayor Invites Trans People Banned From Military To Join Police Department
Many LGBTQ people were stunned and angered Wednesday after President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he was banning transgender service members from the U.S. military.
Just how Trump plans to enforce this ban, which may not even be legal, remains unclear. Still, the mayor of Austin, Texas is urging trans troops on active duty to apply for new jobs on his city’s police force if they find themselves discharged.
Mayor Steve Adler, who is a Democrat, extended the offer in a series of tweets Wednesday afternoon.

Ben Cousins’ dad says AFL too soft on drugs
Bryan Cousins visits his son every other week in prison. The Brownlow medallist’s addiction to methamphetamine and other drugs led him to a 12-month prison term this year.
The former West Coast skipper’s problems are explored in a book about the life of Wally Foreman, who died of a heart attack in 2006. Foreman was one of Mr Cousins’ closest friends.
In the book, written by Foreman’s son Glen, Mr Cousins candidly describes how Ben’s substance abuse problems escalated quietly but drastically.
As he prepares to help launch the book today, Mr Cousins saidthat after a decade of experience of the effects of drug addiction, he was convinced a “zero tolerance” policy on drugs in sport would not work.
“Tell me what that is? Because if it is saying anyone who is caught with anything is thrown out of that sport, then what are you going to do with that person when they are gone?
“What can happen … is that they then only associate with other drug users,” he said.
“On the other hand, of the three or four large drug rehab centres, almost all the counsellors there were on drugs themselves at one point. With help and understanding, they are now helping people to get off drugs.”
He said what could help the AFL prevent another outcome like Ben’s would be a tougher response to any player who tested positive to an illicit substance.
Under the AFL’s illicit drugs policy, a player with a first strike receives a $5000 fine while also undergoing counselling and target testing.
“After the first strike, at the moment they hit them with a feather,” Mr Cousins said…
