Government loses appeal to take phones from asylum seekers

The federal government has lost its appeal to overturn an injunction allowing immigration detainees to keep their mobile phones.

The federal government has lost its appeal against a court ruling that allows immigration detainees to keep their mobile phones.

The Federal Court threw out the appeal in Sydney on Thursday, upholding its injunction and preventing Immigration from seizing detainees’ phones.

After the decision, the National Justice Project’s principal solicitor George Newhouse said if the government was concerned about access to phones it should separate convicted criminals from other detainess.

“The blanket removal of phones is part of the process of criminalising asylum seekers and this government ongoing policy of punishment and cruelty towards them,” Mr Newhouse said.

“Peter Dutton claims that the use of mobile phones is linked to criminal behaviour but asylum seekers are not criminals. Mobile phones are a life line to the outside world that enables them to maintain their sanity and communicate with their families, thr loved ones, the community and their legal representatives.”

The van reportedly veered off the road into people outside the mosque but it was unclear whether the collision was deliberate. One person has been reportedly arrested at the scene. Giant eruption on the Sun – could bring blackout mayhem on Earth next week

A MESMERISING video of a giant eruption on the surface of the Sun has been captured by NASA amid warnings space storms could bring blackout mayhem on Earth next week.

The stunning light show sees cascading loops dance across the Sun’s surface.

NASA scientists said the images were captured in an active region of the star.

The space centre said: “We have observed this phenomenon numerous times, but this one was one of the longest and clearest sequences we have seen in years.

“The bright loops are actually charged particles spinning along the magnetic field lines!”

The action was captured over about 20 hours.

This coronal hole is a vast region where the Sun’s magnetic field tears apart, allowing solar wind to escape.

Super-charged solar winds flowing from the Sun’s atmosphere are expected to reach Earth on April 23 or 24.

In the process, he has brought about the ‘total breakdown’ of relations between the US and Russia, whose leader he so recently courted, while sending out deeply confusing signals about who America backs in Syria (where each side embraces elements as morally repulsive as the other)…

A Current Affair’s Willoughby offices raided by police

Police have raided Channel Nine’s A Current Affair offices and staffers have been asked to vacate the premises over a ‘personal matter’.

As many as eight police entered the A Current Affair offices in Willoughby, in Sydney’s north, at around 9:45am on Thursday.

Officers seized items from executive producer Grant Williams’ office and ordered staff to vacate nearby offices.

It is unclear what police were looking for.

Mr Williams is a former police detective from Seaforth on Sydney’s Northern Beaches and is believed to be overseas in Kuwait for a business trip.

‘I would be the only bloke in TV who has charged someone with murder,’ he has said previously.

Known as ‘Grunter’, Mr Williams spent more than a decade in the police force before was involved in the production of ’90s TV drama Water Rats…

‘Incredible’ water mass en route to Rocky

An “incredible body of water” is starting to flow into Rockhampton as local authorities repeat calls for multi-million dollar levees to guard against future flooding.

Waters continue to rise in the central Queensland city, where the Fitzroy River is expected to peak at nine metres on Thursday morning, leaving around 200 homes inundated.

The Fitzroy River was at 8.25 metres early on Wednesday morning and slowly climbing.

It will be regarded as a major flood when it hits 8.5 metres, expected later on Wednesday.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said while the flood peak had been revised down from 9.4 metres, residents still needed to be prepared.
