#F1 set to rebrand GP2 as Formula Two – Jean Todt
Formula One’s new owner Liberty Media and the sport’s governing International Automobile Federation are set to rebrand the GP2 support series as Formula Two, according to FIA president Jean Todt.
In the latest edition of the FIA’s Auto magazine, Todt said the aim was to complete a pyramid structure leading from karting through Formula Four, Three and Two to F1.
‘Rationalising the pathway to Formula One has been a major goal of the FIA in my time here and the designation of a new F2 would achieve that goal,’ said Todt, who added that confirmation of the deal was imminent.
Liberty Media acquired GP2, which runs mostly as a support series to Formula One on grand prix weekends, as part of a takeover of the sport that was completed in January and led to the departure of previous supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
Formula One’s new managing director for motorsport Ross Brawn said last week that the sport needed to offer more over a weekend and could learn from MotoGP.
‘I’d love to see Formula Two and Formula Three be part of the show, and to have those drivers coming up through into Formula One,’ Brawn told an audience attending a book presentation in Oxford.
‘So you go to a race and see the young guys in Formula Two and Formula Three come through into Formula One, you get to know the names and support them.

Foreign nationals rescued off Sydney coast
A couple say they encountered waves the size of buildings, winds they couldn’t stand in and “whiteness everywhere” as they awaited rescue on their broken yacht off the coast of Sydney.
Irishman Nick Dwyer and Frenchwoman Barbara Heftman arrived safely in Balmain on Wednesday night aboard a NSW Police rescue vessel with the “absolute heroes” who travelled more than 200 nautical miles in treacherous seas to save them.
“We owe them our lives,” Mr Dwyer said.
The experienced sailors had been sailing from New Zealand to Australia in a 12-metre vessel as part of a 10-year circumnavigation of the globe when the yacht’s rudder broke on Saturday.
They activated the yacht’s emergency radio beacon three days later, on Tuesday afternoon, after their yacht “rolled” during a heavy swell and high winds.
“Barbara and I were waiting after the boat turned upside down, holding each other, thinking for a split second that seemed to last for an eternity, ‘is she going to turn upright?'” Mr Dwyer told reporters in Sydney.

Gunmen dressed as doctors stormed the largest military hospital in Kabul.
More than 30 people have been killed after attackers dressed as doctors stormed the largest military hospital in Kabul, Afghan officials say.
Militants armed with guns and grenades gained entry after one detonated explosives at a hospital gate and then opened fire on staff and patients.
Commandos who landed on the Sardar Daud hospital roof killed all four attackers after several hours of fighting.
The so-called Islamic State (IS) group has claimed the attack.
The Taliban has denied any involvement.
More than 50 people were also wounded, the defence ministry said.
President Ashraf Ghani said the attack at the 400-bed hospital “trampled all human values”.
“In all religions, a hospital is regarded as an immune site and attacking it is attacking the whole of Afghanistan,” he said.

Wolverhampton UK stabbing: Two people dead after ‘serious’ domestic attack
Two people have been killed after a man wielding a knife attacked two women in a flat in Wolverhampton.
The attacker, who is believed to have stabbed two women before turning the blade on himself, was confirmed dead by West Midlands Police.
The incident, which occurred at around 9.45am this morning, has left a 30-year-old woman dead, whilst the other has been rushed to hospital with life threatening stomach wounds.
A spokesman for West Midlands Police said that officers had been forced to use stun grenades when they stormed the flat in a bid to distract and detain the knifeman.
However, a police office is believed to have been injured in the altercation, and is now being treated for minor injuries.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said it was at the scene of a “serious incident” in Leasowes Drive in the Merry Hill area of Wolverhampton.

Android may soon be the world’s most popular operating system by internet usage
Windows, once the undisputed king of operating systems, is facing a new contender for the throne.
StatCounter, a web analytics company, found that Android came very close to matching Windows’ market share last month. Google’s mobile OS was used by 37.4 percent of people connecting to the internet in February 2017 versus 38.6 percent who used Windows. Apple’s iOS came in third with 12.99 percent.
StatCounter measures OS market share in terms of internet usage, not device shipments.

Alien: Covenant 2: Ridley Scott has already written another Prometheus sequel
Alien: Covenant – the sequel to Prometheus – isn’t out for another few months and yet Sir Ridley Scott has a follow-up written should the world want it.
The news was seemingly confirmed in a set visit report written by Sydney Morning Herald. The quote reads: “While working on Alien: Covenant, he had the next instalment written so he is ready to keep advancing the saga. “You’ve got to assume to a certain extent success and from that, you’d better be ready,” he says. “You don’t want a two-year gap. So I’ll be ready to go again next year.”’
It’s unsure when the set visit occurred; if last year, it means that should the film correlate to box office success – which is sure to happen when considering the overwhelmingly positive audience reaction to initial footage – Scott could be back at work on the Alien franchise as early as this year.

Johannesburg: Gang of armed thieves posing as police steal £12m
Robbers posing as police have stolen £12million of cash in an Ocean’s Eleven-style heist at a South African airport.
The money was taken when fake officers stopped security guards who were loading the money onto a flight bound for London on Tuesday night.
No shots were fired during the incident at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, and the thieves were said to have known exactly which boxes to target in a ‘slick’ operation.
A police source at the airport said the heist happened at 7pm when the robbers, masquerading as police, drove into a restricted zone and headed straight to cash-laden containers unloaded from a cargo plane.
‘They told the security that they were carrying out an investigation and the security guards opened the boom gate for them,’ said the source.
The company that operates the airport, South Africa’s largest, confirmed in a statement that an armed robbery had taken place.
Hangwani Mulaudzi, spokesman for the elite police unit the Hawks, also confirmed the ‘robbery’ but refused to divulge details ‘pending investigations.’

Let’s be clear here. The ABC cannot verify the authenticity of these documents, and the CIA has declined to confirm whether they are real.
But WikiLeaks, which released the documents, has called it the largest release of confidential CIA intelligence documents ever.
Unlike the leaks from Edward Snowden — which he said he did to protect privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties — this cache doesn’t reveal anything beyond the tools and procedures used by the CIA. It’s designed to hurt and damage the agency.
WikiLeaks said its source wanted a public debate over whether the agency’s hacking capabilities exceeded its mandated powers.
How do they work?
Each of the exploits uses a different method to hack target devices.
Some projects, such as Fine Dining, require the operator to have physical access to a computer.
This tool from the CIA’s Operational Support Branch allows the user to insert a USB stick that downloads information from Windows computers, while giving the appearance of doing something else — like running a virus scan.
A checklist for case officers asks whether operators will be watched while the collection is occurring, how much time they will have, and what information they want (like location information, all the images or office documents).
