BREAKING: Flight from Paris to Birmingham declares emergency after struck by lightening
An Air France flight heading from Paris to Birmingham declared a mid-air emergency after it was hit by a bolt of lightening.
The passenger flight was leaving Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport and was heading to the West Midlands when an alert was sounded.
It later landed safely at Birmingham Airport with no one hurt during the incident.
A spokesman said: ‘I can confirm that AF1064 was hit by lightning during flight from Paris with an emergency being declared as a precaution.
‘The aircraft has since landed safely at Birmingham Airport with no emergency response needed and with no injuries to passengers or crew.
‘All passengers have since disembarked the aircraft safely from the airport stand as usual.
A graphic of the plane’s flight-path was shared on the Nik’s News Twitter account, an aviation-watch site.

BREAKING: Sweden drops its prosecution against Julian Assange. He is a free man
Sweden today announced it has decided to drop its investigation in to rape allegations made against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.
The dramatic decision was revealed by Sweden’s Director of Public Prosecution, Marianne Ny, who said the probe had been ‘discontinued’.
The 45-year-old Australian has been living inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for almost five years and has been granted political asylum. Moments after this morning’s decision, he tweeted a picture of himself smiling.
He denies the 2010 allegations which he feared would see him extradited to the United States and tried over the leaking of hundreds of thousands of secret military and diplomatic documents.
The focus will now move to the governments of the UK and the US and whether Assange will fly to Ecuador to avoid extradition to America.
Swedish investigators had been expected to reveal today whether they would lift a Europe-wide arrest warrant against him in the seven-year-old case.
He has been holed up at the Ecuadoran embassy in London since 2012 and risks being arrested by British police if he steps out of the building.
Today was the deadline for the public prosecutor’s office to either renew or lift Assange’s arrest warrant before a Stockholm court.
Assange’s Swedish lawyer last month filed a new motion demanding that the arrest warrant be lifted after US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in April that arresting Assange would be ‘a priority’.
‘This implies that we can now demonstrate that the US has a will to take action… this is why we ask for the arrest warrant to be cancelled so that Julian Assange can fly to Ecuador and enjoy his political asylum,’ lawyer Per Samuelsson told AFP at the time.
The accusation against Assange dates from August 2010 when the alleged victim, who says she met him at a WikiLeaks conference in Stockholm a few days earlier, filed a complaint.
She accuses him of having sex with her as she slept without using a condom despite repeatedly having denied him unprotected sex.
‘I am entirely innocent,’ Assange wrote in a 19-page testimony released in December 2016.
He argues that the sex was consensual and that the accusations are ‘politically motivated’.
The investigation has suffered from endless procedural complications since it began.
The statute of limitations on the rape allegation expires in August 2020.
In a letter sent to the Swedish government on May 8, Ecuador condemned ‘the obvious lack of progress’ in the investigation despite Swedish officials questioning Assange at the embassy in November 2016.
‘It is extremely worrying that six months after the hearing at the Embassy of Ecuador in the United Kingdom, the Swedish prosecutor’s office has not yet decided on the judicial situation of Julian Assange,’ the Ecuadoran Foreign Ministry said in the letter seen by AFP.
Ecuador demands that Sweden either charges Assange or drops the investigation.
Swedish judges have refused to take into account the opinion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which in February 2016 said Assange was effectively ‘arbitrarily detained’ by Sweden and Britain and called for the warrant to be annulled.

He took an extended break from Albert Square to care for his daughter after a car crash.
But Mick Carter (played by Danny Dyer) steamed back onto EastEnders tonight by getting into a fight with Woody Woodward (Lee Ryan) which saw him strike the show’s new bad boy in the face.
In Thursday night’s episode, Danny’s character was furious when he caught Woody in bed with his-daughter-in-law, Whitney, and their argument quickly came to blows.
After a scuffle, Woody could be seen cradling his nose.
Sensing trouble, Mick’s mother Shirley (Linda Henry) came to break up the argument, ordering Woody to leave before he ‘said too much’.
But the incident is just the first of Mick’s worries. As viewers already know, Shirley sold the freehold of the Queen Vic pub without his permission, in a last-ditch bid to raise money to save Lady Di.

Danny Dyer, 39, took time off EastEnders due to exhaustion.
The actor has thrown himself back into a gruelling filming schedule after time away in South Africa as he took a break from the set.
Speaking after Danny’s break, former EastEnders star Larry Lamb has said that the pressures of being on the show could cause many of the actors to turn to drink.
The soap legend, 69, admitted that actors on the BBC soap may be resorting to alcohol, as they work ‘under stress’.
The Gavin and Stacey actor explained to The Sun at the event: ‘There are a lot of businesses like EastEnders where people maybe get involved in drinking a bit more than they should.

ISIS savages execute and then dismember dozens of women and children
ISIS savages have executed and then dismembered dozens of women and children amid fears the terror group is plotting a wave of massacres in Shiite villages.
Extremists beheaded some prisoners and used bricks to kill children before hacking off their limbs during horrific raids in Hama province in central Syria.
More than 50 were killed during clashes including at least 24 women and children in villages where many residents belong to the Ismaili branch of Shiite Islam.
It has raised fears of a new atrocities mirroring those ISIS carried out in other minority communities – including Yazidi areas – in Syria and Iraq.
The villages, Aqareb and Al-Mabujeh, are located near the town of Salamiyeh and the highway that links the capital, Damascus, to the northern city of Aleppo.
The two villages are home to members of several religious minority sects, and Al-Mabujeh has been targeted by IS before.
In March 2015, the group killed dozens of people and kidnapped some 50 civilians in an attack there.
Media reports and doctors in the area said some of those killed in the latest raid were beheaded and others dismembered.
At least three of the civilians, a man and his two children, were executed with knives, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
ISIS extremists are notorious for mutilating bodies of their adversaries, particularly members of other sects than Sunni Islam.
The militants stormed homes in the southern part of Aqareb al-Safi village before government forces pushed them back into the desert, the state news agency SANA reported.
The head of the National Hospital in Salamiyeh, Dr. Noufal Safar, said it received 52 bodies, including 11 women and 17 children.
Some of the bodies were badly mutilated, beheaded or had their limbs severed but ‘most appear to have died as a result of gunfire,’ Safar told The Associated Press by telephone.
Rami Razzouk, a coroner at the hospital who inspected the bodies, said those of children were brought in mostly dismembered while the men had died from shelling or heavy machine-gun fire.
He said at least nine children were beaten on the head with heavy objects such as bricks or stones.
The Syrian Observatory also said that 52 people were killed in the fighting, with the dead including 15 civilians, 27 Syrian soldiers and 10 unidentified people.
Razzouk said 120 people were wounded; SANA said 40 were wounded.
The ISIS-linked Aamaq news agency said the militants captured villages of Aqareb al-Safi and Mabouja. It identified residents as members of Assad’s Alawite sect, an off-shoot of Shiite Islam. The Sunni extremists view Shiites as apostates deserving of death.
ISIS has massacred thousands of Shiites and other opponents in Syria and Iraq, often boasting about the killings and circulating photos and videos of them online.
Aamaq claimed that 100 Syrian troops and pro-government gunmen were killed in the fighting.
‘Dozens of people are missing but it is not clear if they were kidnapped’ by IS, the Observatory’s chief Rami Abdurrahman said.

Three Girls viewers in fury that Sara Rowbotham was fired
Viewers of the BBC’s chilling Rochdale abuse drama Three Girls erupted with anger when they learned that the hero sexual health worker lost her job after the case.
Fans were left ‘disgusted’ when Thursday night’s finale revealed that Sara Rowbotham was ‘excluded from future initiatives on child grooming’ and later fired.
Furious Twitter users said Ms Rowbotham, played by Maxine Peake, should have been knighted for her efforts in exposing the horrific sex abuse – not ‘forced out of her career’.

At the end of the series, producers explained that Ms Rowbotham was made redundant – despite the evidence she collected still being used to prosecute child sex offenders for crimes dating back to 2003.
‘Made redundant?! She should’ve been bloody knighted,’ one user wrote.
‘Sara Rowbotham made redundant because she ’embarrassed’ the system by exposing their gross negligence. Disgusted, not surprised,’ another added.
A third vented: ‘No police officers were prosecuted for their failings but Sara Rowbotham was their saviour and lost her job? Disgrace.’
Yet another viewer asked: ‘When is #SaraRowbotham going to be made a Dame for services to children eh? Praise not damage for heroes like her please?!’
‘Sara Rowbotham MBE please,’ a fifth fan agreed.
Others penned: ‘Sara Rowbotham was the only person who actually did something gets excluded and then made redundant?!? Really? Disgusting!’
Another added: ‘Can’t help but feel Sara Rowbotham was royally screwed over the 2008 Rochdale case. She’s a hero in my eyes.’

Many viewers credited DC Maggie Oliver as well, portrayed by actress Lesley Sharp.
‘Sara Rowbotham and Maggie Oliver are heroes of our time. Standing up for what is right is so much harder than standing by,’ one wrote.
‘Horrifying that those most dedicated to the girls, Maggie and Sara, were vilified and forced out of their careers,’ another added.
‘Surprise surprise – the two women who helped these girls – one resigned, one made redundant – the system stinks!’ a third wrote furiously.
It comes after Wednesday night’s episode saw a gripping scene between Sara Rowbotham and DC Maggie Oliver.
At the heart of the stand-off between the two women lies the real story of the years they spent battling for the horrific abuse taking place in Rochdale, Manchester, to be taken seriously.
The precious Peake’s character – complaining that girls had been ‘raped, beaten, not believed, raped, beaten, not believed’ – cut police down to size when they finally agreed to re-examine the allegations.
It mirrors the genuine frustration felt by Sara Rowbotham, who had been referring cases to police in Manchester since 2004, without getting anywhere.
DC Maggie Oliver had worked on cases before Operation Span, where she had convinced young women to trust her only to be told no charges were going to be brought.
These began in 2004, but it wasn’t until 2012 that convictions were made against nine of the men involved in the abuse.
She suffered personally with poor health after the true nature of the sex ring was exposed and ended up being made redundant from her job in 2014.
Peake met with Rowbotham on several occasions before taking on her role.
In a piece for the Guardian, she wrote about seeing the girls arrive at the clinic having walked miles from remote countryside where they had been taken to be abused.
Sara wrote: ‘My calls to police were ignored and social workers told me the girls were making lifestyle choices.
‘We’d make them a cup of tea, take them to a sexual health clinic to test for and treat sexually transmitted infections and call the police. But, again, the police didn’t want to know.
‘How it took the police so long to act to protect children from evil criminals, why social services showed wilful blindness in ignoring what was happening and how so many agencies had collectively failed to act much earlier.’

As an officer, Maggie Oliver used her real-life experience to gain the trust of the vulnerable girls she tried to help during police investigations in 2004, and again a number of years later, before Operation Span.
But she said her work was wasted when the operations were non-existent after she came back from caring for and then mourning her late husband.
She said: ‘I worked on an almost identical operation in 2004, Operation Augusta, which had identified dozens of young victims and dozens of suspects.
‘It was a virtual carbon copy of Rochdale, men of largely Pakistani heritage were abusing vulnerable white girls, in Hulme, and around the Curry Mile, in Rusholme. I was on that job for a year and a half. It was a huge investigation.
‘We also had social workers telling us they’d been trying to get the police to take this problem seriously for years.
‘But not one offender was arrested or charged. I couldn’t believe it. It was as if none of it had ever happened.
‘Nobody was ever able to explain to me why the case had been dropped. I wanted to know because I’ve got four kids of my own.’

Viewers of Thursday’s 13th season finale of Grey’s Anatomy likely got a surprise as one of the show’s longtime cast members departed.
On Thursday’s episode, the Grey Sloan Memorial building caught fire, leaving one of the doctors at a career crossroads that causes them to hang up their scrubs.
The character had a heroic last stand, saving a child’s life amid fending off their own injury, before making a career-changing decision.

Dr. Stephanie Edwards has left the building.
After making it through a fire at the medical institution, Edwards, played by actress Jerrika Hinton, told Dr. Richard Webber (played by James Pickens, Jr.): ‘I spent my whole life in hospitals, my whole life. I need to travel and hike and breathe. I want to breathe it all in, away from the monitors and the blood and the sterile counts and away from saving other people’s lives; I want my own. This time, I live my own.’
The character departed the medical institution amid Hinton’s role on an Alan Ball HBO series; before that, she’d been tied to a series called Toast, from Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes, but the project did not get off the ground.
Hinton told The Hollywood Reporter that ‘when Toast didn’t go, [she] went away and had a spiritual summer in a lot of ways.’
The 35-year-old Dallas native said that she and Rhimes ‘had a meeting at the beginning of season 13’ in which they figured out a mutually beneficial exit plan for the character.

Thirteen people injured as ANOTHER train derails outside of NYC
Thirteen people were injured Thursday evening when another train derailed outside of New York City during rush hour.
Four people required medical treatment at a hospital after a Metro-North train derailed in Westchester around 5pm, according to NBC New York. At least one person was seen being taken off the train by stretcher.
According to MTA officials, the derailment led to significant delays after five of the 12 cars slid off the tracks not too far from the Rye station on the New Haven line.
The train was scheduled to get into Grand Central at 5.42pm, officials said.
Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino told NBC that the train appeared to be going around a curve at a speed faster than the 10mph allowed.
Astorino indicated that it was likely that the ‘excessive speed’ could have played a role in the derailment.
However, MTA would not confirm Astorino’s statement about the speed, but said a speed restriction was set for the curve Thursday because of hot weather, according to NBC.
Passengers were transferred to another train by 6.30pm.
According to the MTA’s Twitter page, crews worked well into the night to remove the derailed train.
The MTA said on Twitter that it’s optimistic that it will be a ‘relatively normal’ commute for Metro-North riders on Friday morning.
Transportation officials are investigating the cause of the accident.
In early April, Penn Station suffered its second derailment in less than two weeks when an NJ Transit train went off track, causing a handful of injuries and delays.
The Northeast Corridor train, which departed Trenton at 7.31am, had a ‘slow-speed derailment’ as it pulled into Track 9 around 9am.
Two weeks before that derailment, an Amtrak train had a slow-speed derailment on Track 6 at Penn Station.

Police officer found dead Melbourne factory man in custody
A retired Special Operations police officer has been found dead inside an industrial factory at Braeside in Melbourne’s south-east.
Police discovered the former officer’s body shortly before 10am on Friday after a man, 45, handed himself in at the Mordialloc Police Station.
The 45-year-old man is being held in custody, but police have not confirmed if the death is being treated as suspicious.
Police believe the two men were known to each other. The 41-year-old man found dead was reportedly a member of the Victoria Police’s elite Special Operations Group.
He reportedly held the rank of senior constable until he retired in 2010 after being diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Homicide squad detectives remain at the scene.
