Far-right nationalists found guilty of inciting contempt for Muslims: mock beheading video
Blair Cottrell, Christopher Shortis and Neil Erikson have each been fined $2,000 after they filmed the beheading of a mannequin with a toy sword outside the Bendigo council offices in 2015.
The so-called ‘Bendigo Three’ argued that their video, which was released on the United Patriot’s Front Facebook page, was an act of free speech that focused on a specific tenet of Islam.
But the magistrate disagreed, arguing the video was clearly intended to create serious contempt for or ridicule of Muslims.
“We live in a community which is inclusive and that each individual deserves the right to live their life peacefully,” Magistrate Peter Hardy said.

Man shot and killed in Bathurst following police confrontation
A man has died from a gunshot wound following a confrontation with police inside a home in the New South Wales town of Bathurst.
Police were called to a house on View Street in the Bathurst suburb of Kelso about 7:00pm on Wednesday night.
Police said they tried to resuscitate the man, Ian Fackender, but he died at the scene.
In a police radio recording a female voice said: “We’ve got a male down, he’s been shot.”
A male voice said: “All police have been accounted for … none injured.”
View Street was blocked off to the media by police.
Numerous ambulances and police vehicles were still on the scene hours after the incident.
On Thursday morning forensic officers continued to search the location
A critical incident investigation has been launched by the Homicide Squad.
That investigation will be subject to independent review and all information will be provided to the coroner, NSW Police said in a statement.
There have been three fatal police shootings in NSW in the past five weeks. On July 26, a 30-year-old man was shot dead at Sydney’s Central Station after he attacked an elderly florist and ran at police with a pair of scissors.

Meth probe: Police seize $1.6 million cash in hire car search in #Perth from 2 Victorian men
The car was stopped as part of a nation-wide investigation into methamphetamine dealing.
Officers stopped the car in the CBD at 6.45pm on Tuesday.
A search of the car found two suitcases that contained $1.6 million in cash.
Two Victorian men, a 29-year-old from Carnegie and a 33-year-old man from Vermont South, were both charged with unlawful possession of money.
They are due to appear in the Perth Magistrate’s Court on August 30.
The arrests were part of a joint investigation involving the WA Police Proceeds of Crime Meth Money Team and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission.

Barcelona terror 13 people were killed: 3 Australians hurt in terror attack
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said this morning: “I can report that one Australian woman, believed to be from New South Wales is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
“Two young Australian men have advised us that they were directly affected, they have gone back to their hotel and will seek medical treatment in the morning.”
“I’m not sure if they have injured or they just need to see a medical professional.”
Ms Bishop said consular officials were seeking more information on the woman who was hospitalised.
“We know she is in a serious but stable condition. Our consular staff will be at the hospital as soon as possible.”
More than 13 people were killed – Ms Bishop put the toll at 16 – and more than 100 injured when a white van ploughed into crowds on Las Ramblas.
Witnesses have described horrific scenes and fearful crowds in the aftermath of the attack, which has been claimed by Islamic State.
Ms Bishop described it as an “atrocity”.
“The Australian government condemns this brutal and deliberate act clearly designed to harm tourists on holidays in Spain,” she said.
Meanwhile, an Australian tourist has told of the horror that unfolded moments after a van ploughed into crowds, killing at least 12 people in a terrorist attack.
Susan McLean was about 100m from the scene as the van zigzagged down one of the city’s busiest avenues, mowing down pedestrians and leaving bodies strewn across the ground.
“All of a sudden there was this tidal wave of people running from both Placa de Catalunya and Las Ramblas towards us screaming, crying and with absolute terror etched on their faces,” she told Nine Network on Friday.
“Initially we couldn’t hear anything other than all these people running towards us. Several of them were calling ’gun, gun’, so first of all we thought someone had been shot.
“Then they just kept sort of – it was all in Spanish. It was very difficult to understand but they were sort of pushing us into shops.”

Schaffhausen: Police launch manhunt after chainsaw attacker injures five in Swiss town
Police warned the suspect, Franz Wrousis, 51, was “aggressive and psychologically unstable” but said this was not a terrorist attack.
“This was first and foremost a crime against this insurance agency,” police official Ravi Landolt said.
Police said one CSS employee was seriously injured in the attack on the ground floor of the insurer’s office, while another employee suffered minor injuries. Three other people also suffered minor injuries.
A rescue helicopter was brought in to help the victims.
Police cordoned off the area and ordered people to leave, local media reported, while witnesses saw bleeding victims being treated by rescue crews.
Swiss media reported Mr Wrousis, who has no fixed address and had been seen several times in woods near Schaffhausen, was a CSS client. Switzerland has a system that requires residents to have mandatory health insurance with private health insurers.

Australian woman ‘shot dead by police in Minneapolis’
An Australian woman has reportedly been shot dead by police responding to a 911 emergency call in the US city of Minneapolis.
The woman, aged 40, has not yet been formally identified. Family and friends told local media they did not want to identify her until the woman’s family in Australia were informed.
The two officers were responding to a call of a possible assault in an alleyway just before 11:30pm local time on Saturday.
“At one point an office fired their weapon, fatally striking a woman,” the police department said in a statement.
Local media say neighbours are mystified as to what occurred.
“I am heartsick and deeply disturbed by the incident,” Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges said in a statement.
“I’m seeking answers to the questions we all have, and will make sure to keep the communication flowing.”
Ms Hodges said she understood the police body cameras and squad camera, which were introduced to the Minneapolis Police Department in 2016, were not switched on when the shooting occurred.
She said the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) would lead the investigation into the shooting.
The two officers involved are on paid administrative leave which is standard procedure during BCA investigations.
A rally organised by local activist Mel Reeves is currently underway at the site of the shooting.

A stuntman working on the set of The Walking Dead has reportedly suffered a serious injury to his head.
AMC released a statement to Fox News confirming the identity of the injured person.
“We are saddened to report that John Bernecker, a talented stuntman for The Walking Dead and numerous other television shows and films, suffered serious injuries from a tragic accident on set. He was immediately transported to an Atlanta hospital and we have temporarily shut down production. We are keeping John and his family in our thoughts and prayers.”

ATO staffer leaks phone hacking how-to online, reveals fraud investigation tactics
A tax office staffer has been disciplined after publishing a step-by-step guide to hack mobile phones, potentially teaching criminals to steal sensitive information.
Key points:
- Disclosure by staffer shows how to bypass passwords, obtain data when phone is flat
- Staffer claims to have worked on intelligence taskforces, researched dark web for Government
- Document refers to Cellebrite, the company that reportedly helped FBI hack San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone
The disclosure reveals the Australian Tax Office’s (ATO) fraud investigation tactics and a push for powers normally associated with police and intelligence agencies.
The instructions showed how to bypass passwords and obtain data even if the phone battery is flat and does not have a sim card.
The tax office was unaware of the breach when contacted for comment by the ABC. The material was taken offline within an hour.
The employee, who published the material on LinkedIn, claims to have worked on intelligence taskforces and researched the so-called dark web for the Government.
The ABC understands the document was presented within the tax office.
It demonstrates how to retrieve deleted data, access text messages and phone call records.

TV hosts accuse Trump’s White House of smear threat over bad coverage
Two television hosts attacked by Donald Trump have questioned the US President’s mental health and accused him of trying to exert pressure on them over unfavourable coverage.

Mr Trump drew a barrage of criticism, including from his fellow Republicans, after he called Mika Brzezinski, a co-host of the MSNBC Morning Joe program, “low I.Q. Crazy Mika” and said she was “bleeding badly from a face lift” when she visited his Mar-A-Lago estate around New Year’s Eve.
He referred to her co-host and fiance Joe Scarborough, a former Republican US congressman, as “Psycho Joe”.
The anchors — who were on friendly terms with Mr Trump early in the 2016 presidential campaign but have been critical of him since he took office — responded with a column in The Washington Post on Friday titled: “Donald Trump is not well”.
“This year, top White House staff members warned that the National Enquirer was planning to publish a negative article about us unless we begged the President to have the story spiked,” they wrote.
“We ignored their desperate pleas.”

‘Mother of all bombs’: US drops biggest non-nuclear weapon ever used
President Donald Trump touted the bombing as evidence of a more muscular US foreign policy since he took office in January after eight years of President Barack Obama.
The 9,797-kilogram GBU-43 bomb was dropped from a MC-130 aircraft in the Achin district of Nangarhar province, close to the border with Pakistan, Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said.
It was the first time the United States has used this size of bomb in a conflict.

Moomba Birdman Rally: Samuel Johnson wins prize, promises to share it
Crowds gathered as competitors leapt from a platform to try to fly across the river as part of the annual Moomba Festival event.
Fifteen competitors donned costumes and flying apparatus to try to make it across the Yarra, before inevitably plunging into its muddy depths.
Entrants were judged on how many metres they flew, but could boost their scores based on how much money they raised for a chosen charity ahead of the event.
