Australia v Bangladesh: National team suffers historic first loss to cricket minnows

AUSTRALIA has succumbed to a despairing first ever loss to Bangladesh after a David Warner century was not enough to save them from collapsing in an epic Test match thriller in Dhaka.

With a stirring comeback story within reach, Australia’s middle order batsmen fell in a heap to deliver cricket’s ninth-ranked minnows a stunning result that will go down as one of the all-time great upsets, but at the same time an abject failure for Steve Smith’s men.

Pat Cummins almost pulled off a miracle for Australia with a six-hitting 33 not out, but Josh Hazlewood was trapped lbw 20 runs short of victory to spark raucous celebrations on the pitch and in the stands.

Warner smashed a superb drought-breaking hundred in the sub-continent – an innings full of spirit ad fight and arguably the finest of his decorated career – but his dismissal opened the floodgates as Australia capitulated to lose 6-41 in the space of just 16 overs.

Cummins and Nathan Lyon raised final hopes that a miracle was still possible when they put on 29 in 10 overs, but in the end not even the sight of the big bowler smashing two sixes into the crowd could stop Bangladesh from celebrating a moment in history – just their 10th victory in 101 Tests.

Chasing 265 to win in the fourth innings on a treacherous pitch was always going to be a huge challenge, and despite the fight shown by some, Australia’s middle order made a complete meal of the chase to be bowled out for 244 and lose by 20 runs.

When Glenn Maxwell was bowled by 10-wicket hero Shakib Al Hasan the very first ball after lunch, it was virtually curtains with Australia still 66 runs from home and only the bowlers left.

ISIS: tank rolls over car with suicide bombers caught on video

A VIDEO of an army tank driving over a car occupied by IS suicide bombers and 100kg of explosives before a deadly blast has been released.

The tank crew moved into action when they realised the car was on a suicide mission and lives were at risk near a military security checkpoint in North Sinai.

Along with three army vehicles, the Egyptian army tank tried to block the car but when it continued to move forward the tank rolled over it, crushing the occupants, in a bid to save lives.

Seven civilians, including two children, were killed when the car bomb exploded but the quick thinking of the tank crew appears to have averted a much higher death toll.

The explosion happened 200 metres from its military target, “when an Egyptian soldier used a tank to stop the vehicle,” according to an Egyptian army statement.

The victims — three men, two women and two children — “happened to be in the area in front of the ambush during the blast,” the statement added, without saying when the incident happened.

“The explosion was large, carrying about 100 kilograms of high explosives,” an army spokesman said in the statement.

Egypt’s military is battling a local affiliate of the Islamic State group that has waged a deadly insurgency in the northern Sinai, killings hundreds of members of the security forces.

Since December, IS has also targeted Christians in other parts of the country, including in Cairo, killing dozens.

The jihadists have threatened to carry out further attacks on Christians, who make up about 10 per cent of Egypt’s 90 million people.

The bombing by IS of a Russian airliner carrying holiday-makers from a South Sinai resort in 2015 killed all 224 people on board and severely damaged the country’s tourism sector.

Deadly outbreak of dengue fever kills 227 in Sri Lanka with 77,000 infections

A deadly outbreak of dengue fever has ravaged the island nation of Sri Lanka, killing at least 227 people and infecting tens of thousands.

“Dengue will get worse as flood waters recede further,” Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said in comments made to state-owned media outlet Daily News.
The government has deployed 450 troops in a bid to help combat the spread of the disease.
“We are assisting health inspectors to search for dengue breeding areas and have also set up temporary wards at the Negombo Hospital on the outskirts of Colombo to tackle the issue,” Sri Lankan Army spokesman Brigadier Roshan Senevirathana told CNN.
Families are now struggling to find adequate care for affected individuals, with overcrowded hospitals turning away patients in need of urgent assistance.
Dengue is endemic in Sri Lanka. The last major outbreak in 2009 saw 25,000 infections and 249 deaths.

Ariana Grande to become first honorary citizen of Manchester

Ariana Grande is to become the first honorary citizen of Manchester for helping to raise millions of pounds for victims of the Manchester Arena attack.

The US pop star exemplified the “resilient and compassionate” way the city responded to the terror atrocity that claimed 22 lives and injured 220 others last month, council leaders said.

The new accolade came as town hall officials announced plans for an event to recognise the “great many selfless acts and demonstrations of community spirit” in the aftermath of the attack on 22 May.

24 killed in bus crash in Philippines

24 killed in bus crash in Philippines

Disaster-response officer Mark Raymond Cano told The Associated Press that the brakes of the bus apparently failed as it negotiated a downhill road in Nueva Ecija province’s Carranglan town.

Cano says the rest of the passengers were retrieved by rescuers and taken to a hospital mostly with serious injuries.

Senior police official Robert de Guzman said bystanders saw the speeding bus fall into the ravine.

“Initial reports said there were 40 people aboard the bus,” De Guzman told a local radio station. “The injured victims have been rushed to nearby hospitals.”
