Only one race remains before Formula One takes its annual rest for the summer – a break that after the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend may weigh heavier on some shoulders than others. The next few days will be potentially as instructive in the fight for the world championship as any we have seen thus far. Only a sliver separates Lewis Hamilton from Sebastian Vettel at the top of the table but Budapest has more import than just who will hold the lead when racing returns at Spa at the end of August.
The gap between Mercedes and Ferrari has been close all season. From the moment the Scuderia hit the ground running at testing we saw a proper fight at the front. But with new regulations it was also clear that victory would not necessarily go to the swiftest at the start of the season but the team who could develop their car most effectively to its end
During the early races the two teams were on a par, indeed, if anything in race pace Ferrari seemed to have the edge over the previously dominant Mercedes. The latter had struggled with balance, set-up and putting their tyres into the correct temperature operating window. They had been set back it is understood by the FIA ban on the suspension system they had intended to use and were learning about the car on the go. Hamilton in particular struggled in Sochi and Monaco. The latter was noted by the team’s executive director, Toto Wolff, as the point at which they identified their problems and began to turn things round.
Hamilton now trails Vettel by one point after his victory at the British Grand Prix and he has some momentum but more ominously for Ferrari he may well now have the car under him he has sought all season…

The worldwide commercial aviation industry will need an extra 255,000 pilots by 2027 to sustain its rapid growth and is not moving fast enough to fill the positions, according to a 10-year forecast published by training company CAE Inc (CAE.TO).
More than half of the required pilots have not yet begun training, the report adds, storing up potential problems as the industry braces for an increase in passenger air traffic that is expected to double the size of the commercial air transport industry in the next 20 years.
“Rapid fleet expansion and high pilot retirement rates create a further need to develop 180,000 first officers into new airline captains, more than in any previous decade,” said the report by CAE, which trains pilots for airlines around the world.
“The shortage of pilots is a problem today. There’s demand today, so people need to start building a strategy with us or other professional academies to be able to build that pipeline,” Nick Leontidis, CAE’s Group President for civil aviation training solutions told journalists at the Paris Airshow on Tuesday.
Rival L3 (LLL.N) also operates pilot training academies.
To meet demand, Leontidis said CAE would seek to grow its own training academy business, rather than make acquisitions.

Another arrest was made early Saturday morning in connection with the London Bridge terror attack, just hours after police released additional details about the investigation, including a photo of a knife used by the attackers.
Officers from the Metropolitan London Police’s Counter Terrorism Command arrested a 28-year-old man at a residential address in East London at 2:05 a.m., police said.
“He was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000,” police said in a statement. “He has been taken into custody at a police station in Berkshire and is detained under the Terrorism Act.”
He is the 19th person arrested in connection with the attack, but twelve of the individuals were released this week without charge…

Family and friends of Sara Zelenak have taken to social media to appeal for information about the missing 21-year-old who hasn’t been heard from since witnessing the London Bridge attack on Saturday night.
Her family had hoped Ms Zelenak may have been one of two unnamed Australians caught up in the dramas but Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Monday afternoon said the government had been in touch with those families.
A Facebook post written by a friend, and shared numerous times, says Ms Zelenak was last seen on London Bridge and witnessed the attacks before getting separated from her friends.
“Her phone has rang with no reply and now the battery must have gone,” read the original post, which has since been deleted.
“She is Australian aged 21 with long blonde hair. She calls her mum daily. It’s been over 24 hours with no news from the consulate. We was hoping the 3rd Australian reported would be her, but it’s not.
“She is based in London. Please share with as many people as possible especially if you have friends down south. Thank you for your help.”
The frantic appeal came as the Queensland families of two other Australians – Brisbane’s Candice Hedge and Darwin electrician Andrew Morrison – breathed major sighs of relief after they were stabbed.
Ms Hedge, 34, working as a waitress in the Borough Markets area, underwent emergency surgery but is expected to make a full recovery after her attackers missed her windpipe or arteries.
“She can’t think how she got so lucky because she thought she was going to die,” Ms Hedge’s grandfather Brian, who lives in Queensland’s Darling Downs, told AAP.
Mr Hedge spoke to his granddaughter, who has been living in the UK for just over a year, after ringing her in hospital on Monday morning.
“She told me she’s going well. She said ‘grandad you know I’m a Hedge and I’m a fighter, I’ll get over this,” he said…
He said he believed a brawl was breaking out when “all of a sudden a guy comes up with a knife … stabs me there (motioning to his neck) I push him off and blood is going everywhere”…

AN armoured police van has taken Schapelle Corby to the Parole Board, in a high-level operation that News Corp has obtained details on.

The van has arrived and she has gone inside.
Corby has begun her long-awaited journey to freedom, leaving her Kuta home amidst dramatic and chaotic scenes, bundled into a car.
Dozens of police and media and surrounded Corby as she was taken out the gate of her home in Kuta and shoved into a waiting black car with her sister Mercedes.
She had a scarf around her head, wore dark sunglasses and carried a handbag with a picture of William Tyrrell.

At least 1800 people, many of them pilgrims, are stranded after a landslide hit a highway near a Hindu temple site in India’s northern mountainous state of Uttarakhand.
The landslide triggered by pre-monsoon rains blocked the highway to the Badrinath temple, one of the main Hindu shrines in the region, leading to many vehicles being stuck on both sides.
“Around 1800 people have been affected by the landslide. Authorities have made provisions for the lodging, food and drinking water of the people in the area,” state official Ashish Joshi said on Saturday.
Another state official, Vinod Kumar Suman, said there were no reports of deaths or injuries.
“The pilgrims and tourists have been asked to stay at their places till the road gets cleared.
“Road clearing teams have been at work, removing the debris. The route will be fully opened for traffic with operations Saturday,” he added.
Tens of thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit the temples in the Himalayan state every year.
In 2013, heavy monsoon rains triggered devastating floods and landslides in the region, leaving more than 5700 dead or missing and presumed dead.

SPOILER ALERT — contains storylines from May 9’s Wentworth episode.
IT might well be the most gruesome moment in the history of the multi award-winning drama Wentworth. And that’s saying something.
The drama, which is shown on Foxtel’s showcase channel, saw Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) add involuntary tongue removal to her already alarming CV of dirty deeds.
To recap, The Freak blackmailed the prison nurse to get access to ‘Juicy’ Lucy Gambaro (Sally-Anne Upton) who was scheduled to have an dodgy tooth extracted by an external dentist.
Gambaro, Wentworth fans will remember, sexually assaulted Ferguson in a shower last season.
The patient Ferguson finally got her revenge this week. Dozing off on happy gas in the dental chair, Juicy Lucy wound up being straddled by Ferguson, who was wielding a surgical blade ready to make an unkind cut.
Her final words to Lucy: “You’ve licked your last p!@#y.”
Fans watched as Ferguson severed Lucy’s tongue — the victim then staggered out into the exercise area of the jail and coughed up blood and gore onto poor prison boss and birthday girl Vera Bennett (Kate Atkinson).
Bennett then got the worst birthday present ever on her desk — the tongue wrapped up in a box, Seven style.
Here’s the gruesome story behind Tongue-gate — a scene that is instantly iconic in Wentworth history.
Sally-Anne Upton was given the heads up about the pivotal scene at the start of this fifth series of Wentworth from the Foxtel show’s writers and producers.
“My first thought was ‘Oh no, I can’t do my one-liners and ad libs anymore with no tongue’,” Upton says. “But also I realised it’d be a real moment.”
The scenes in the dental chair took an extraordinary seven and a half hours to film.
“I’d done a bit of research on tongues. I’m a nurse too, nine times out of 10 someone will die from an incident like that because the tongue is so vascular. I knew we only had a short amount of time for me to get out into the courtyard. I was reading an article about a guy who had his tongue cut out because he knew too much.
“He said it was the most painful thing but he couldn’t scream. He couldn’t vocalise it. That’s why she screams and it’s that last cut and there’s no scream.”

A 24-year-old man was arrested following the incident at the Canning Road store in Karagullen at about 7.40pm on Friday.
Police say the man entered the liquor store and allegedly stole some alcohol, walking out of the shop and placing the stolen booze in a vehicle.
He then moved the vehicle to a fuel pump at the same premises and attempted to use it, but the store operator denied it.
“The man then walked into the store and allegedly threatened the store person with a knife,” a police spokesman said.
“It is further alleged the man attempted to obtain the victims phone and car keys.”
Police say the victim, a 22-year-old man, fled outside with a customer and they locked the man in the store and called police.
“Whilst this happened the man allegedly damaged the shop and set fire to items within the store,” the spokesman said.
The fire was extinguished but the man and the police officers who arrested him all suffered smoke inhalation.
The building was destroyed in the fire.
Police will further allege the man stole a BMW station wagon during a burglary at a Kewdale home on Friday about 5.30pm before driving to Rivervale and stealing items from a delivery driver parked outside a Surrey Road address.
His alleged crime spree culminated about an hour later at the Karagullen store.
The 24-year-old has been charged with a string of offences, including criminal damage by fire, armed robbery, stealing, home burglary and stealing a motor vehicle. He will appear in Perth Magistrates Court at a later date.
