Life sentences for ‘Patrick Slater slayers’

A VIOLENT mob of young men who murdered Patrick Slater in the hours after Australia Day last year in a brutal revenge attack have been jailed.

Mr Slater’s final moments were spent running from eight armed males aged between 11 and 29 at a city train station in the early hours of the morning.

The 26-year-old victim was killed when the group caught up with him and attacked him in a dark alcove.

Six young men dubbed by prosecutors as the “Patrick Slater slayers” were found guilty of murder after a Supreme Court trial earlier this year.

Christopher Birdsall, Dylan Anthony, Robert Pickett and brothers Stefan and Clinton Mead were today sentenced to life behind bars with minimums of between 16 and 18 years.

An 18-year-old, who can not be named because he was a juvenile at the time, will spend 12 years behind bars over the murder.

A 16-year-old boy spent three days on trial for murder with the other men before pleading guilty to manslaughter.

He re-joined his co-accused in the dock today and was sentenced to 4.5 years detention.

Supreme Court Justice Peter Martino said the males were motivated by revenge when they attacked Mr Slater.

He said Mr Slater had 23 external injuries, including a fatal stab wound, when the group walked away and left him dying on the floor.

“He died quickly after he was fatally stabbed,” Justice Martino said.

“None of them made any attempt to assist Mr Slater.”

Man jailed for 35 years in Thailand for insulting monarchy on Facebook

A Thai man has been jailed for 35 years for Facebook posts deemed insulting to the royal family, a watchdog said, in one of the harshest sentences handed down for a crime that insulates Thailand’s ultra-rich monarchy from criticism.

A Bangkok military court convicted him of 10 counts of lese-majesty for posting photos and videos of the royal family on a Facebook account that purported to belong to a different user.

Wichai, 34, whose last name was withheld to protect his relatives from ostracism, was accused of using the account to slander a former friend, said iLaw, a group that tracks royal defamation cases.

“The court punished him with seven years per count. Altogether he was given 70 years, but it was reduced in half because he confessed,” said Yingcheep Atchanont from iLaw…

Two officers shot in Vic hostage situation

It’s understood two police officers have been shot, and a gunman is dead, after a hostage situation at a south-east Melbourne apartment block.

The officers were believed to have been trying to storm the apartment when they were injured, their conditions are unknown.

Emergency services, including SES crews, were called to the scene on Bay Street about 4pm on Monday where they located the body of a man who appeared to have been shot in the foyer of the building.

Police were negotiating with a man inside one of the apartments, who was holding a woman hostage.

Authorities have confirmed the situation is now under control.

Shots did ring out at the scene with residents told to take cover at a nearby Coles, while those in the apartment building have been evacuated.

Roads are closed in the vicinity and police are urging the community to avoid the area.
