Sydney terror raids: Police scour raided homes for third day over alleged plane terror plot

Police will continue to gather evidence at five homes in Sydney today as they piece together the details of an alleged terror plot to blow up a plane.

Key points:

  • Police expect to be at the properties for at least another two or three days
  • ABC understands father and son among those arrested
  • It is not yet known when the group allegedly wanted to carry out an attack

Four men are being held at the Sydney police station under special terrorism powers after being arrested during counter-terror raids on Saturday night.

A senior police source told the ABC father and son Khaled and Mahmoud Khayat were among those being held.

The two other men, Khaled and Abdul Merhi, are believed to be related, but it is unclear how.

The special powers allow for the men to be held without charge for up to 12 hours, with authorities to review their detention every 12 hours.

The men could be in custody for days before knowing the specific allegations against them, giving investigators time to gather the evidence they need to finalise any potential case against the group.
