More than 300 WA truckies taken off the road

MORE than 300 truck drivers in Western Australia have had their licences suspended after claims they weren’t properly assessed, with the union saying it’s fortunate no one has been killed on the road.

An investigation by the WA Department of Transport and Corruption and Crime Commission uncovered “irregularities” in the conduct of a heavy vehicle practical driving assessment provider.

A department spokesperson says it might mean some people have been granted a licence despite not meeting requirements.

The department alleges 326 truck drivers are “unlikely to have passed” an assessment and is suspending their licences.

The spokesperson refused to clarify whether the drivers had failed a test or were not assessed at all.A review of records is continuing and further suspensions may be imposed.

Transport Workers Union state secretary Tim Dawson described the allegation as “quite worrying”.”
