Chris Leggett: Man dies after doing backflip, wife heartbroken

A PERTH widow is struggling to make sense of a freak holiday accident that claimed her husband’s life.

Chris Leggett was showing a group of children how to do a backflip at a Dunsborough park when he landed awkwardly and broke his neck, 7 News reported.

The tragic accident happened on Good Friday, and just days later, the FIFO worker’s life support was turned off.

“It’s just like having your heart ripped out,” Chris’ widow Rachael said, fighting back tears.

“I just said goodbye and told him I loved him and we’d all do our best to keep his memory alive for the kids.

“I think in my heart of hearts, I’m still waiting for him to come home.”

Mrs Leggett said explaining her husband’s sudden death to the couple’s children was the hardest part.

“People keep saying ‘he’s still there with you’. Try explaining that to a three-year-old when he asks ‘When is Daddy coming back from the sky Mummy?’,” she said.

“We’ll never feel better but we’ll find a way to live with what’s happened and I think we have to for the sake of the kids.

“We have to keep moving forward but I don’t think we’ll ever feel better.”

The 37-year-old hadn’t been drinking and had performed the backflip countless times when he went to jump off a ledge.
