SOUTHERN SIEGE: Melbourne overtakes Sydney as Australia’s crime capital

Commiserations Melbourne, you’ve now overtaken Sydney as the armed robbery and unlawful entry capital of Australia.

The unwanted honour is due to the 2016 Australian Bereau of Statistics results, which found that Victoria has 52,700 cases of unlawful entry with intent, rising from the 44,400 recorded in 2010.

NSW improved drastically, recording only 41,200 unlawful entries compared to the whopping 59,700 recorded in 2010.

When it comes to armed robberies, Victoria recorded 500 more (1900 up from 1400), while NSW enjoyed a massive downturn from 2150 down to 1070.

As a ratio of victims to population, Victoria trounced its northern counterpart, with 869 victims of unlawful entry per 100,000 residents, compared to 533 for NSW.
