Massive travel disruptions at Brisbane airport as thick fog blankets city and forces flights to divert

Brisbane-bound travellers were left in a limbo on Wednesday morning after a thick fog disrupted their travel plans into the city while others catching outbound flights were also hit with delays.

Brisbane Airport Corporation spokeswoman Leonie Vandeven told Daily Mail that as many as six flights had to be diverted to Sydney, while two others to the Gold Coast.

Vandeven said the diversions that she knew of to Sydney were two flights from Perth, a Qantas flight from Singapore and Narita, Tokyo each.

‘The fog cleared around 8am but due to earlier delays there was a backlog to clear.

‘The airport team, airlines and air services are doing a stellar job in getting things back on track,’ she said.

‘This is the fourth major fog event we’ve had in nine days, which is unusual.’

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Michael Paech told the ABC that the fog was mainly affecting areas near the Brisbane river.

‘The fog is mainly along the Brisbane River all the way to the airport and just out into western parts of Moreton Bay, very extensive into Ipswich and the western suburbs, Logan and the like.

‘It’s reasonably thick out there — we see visibility’s down to around about 300 metres at the airport and 400 (metres) to 500 metres out at Ipswich, so take care on the roads.’

Besides airport delays, the fog had also caused Brisbane ferries to be delayed by 10 minutes but the issue was quickly resolved by Translink, the Department of Transport and Main Roads of the Queensland Government.
