Like many terrorists, Charlottesville car attack suspect accused of domestic violence

Many mass killers and terrorists share a similar history.

When James Alex Fields Jr. allegedly rammed his car into a crowd protesting a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and killed a woman on Saturday, it was not the first time he was accused of violent behavior.

In 2010, his mother, Samantha Bloom, told police that her son hit her in the head, covered her mouth with his hands and threatened to assault her after she told the young teen to stop playing video games, according to The Washington Post.

The following year, the police were called twice. In October 2011, Bloom, who is disabled and uses a wheelchair, called 911 to report that Fields was “being very threatening toward her,” the dispatcher wrote. The next month, police were requested after Fields allegedly spat in his mother’s face and stood behind her with a 12-inch knife.

If this is sounding familiar, it should: A history of domestic violence is a common thread linking many mass killers and violent terrorists.

Take Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who drove his truck into a crowd gathered for a Bastille Day fireworks display in Nice, France, last year. He too had been accused of abusing his mother, as well as his wife.

Or Omar Mateen, the man who last year opened fire in a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, committing the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. He also allegedly beat his former wife, and his widow ― who is facing charges related to the nightclub attack ― says he physically abused her too…

Hawaiian pizza creator Sam Panopoulos dies aged 83

Diners turned their noses up at the unusual creation at first, but its creator says they soon “went crazy about it”.

The man who took the bold step of combining canned pineapple with ham to create the world-famous Hawaiian pizza has died.

Greek immigrant Sam Panopoulos dreamed up the topping more than 50 years ago at his Satellite Restaurant in Ontario, Canada.

The 83-year-old died suddenly in hospital on Thursday, having recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary.

Mr Panopoulos had a number of successful restaurants with his brothers when he first threw together the unlikely ingredients at his Chatham restaurant in 1962.

“Nobody liked it at first,” he told Canadian broadcaster CBC earlier this year.

“But after that, they went crazy about it, because (in) those days nobody was mixing sweet and sour and all that. It was plain, plain food.”

Little did he know it would eventually become a fixture on pizza menus all over the world.

The Hawaiian name is said to have come from the can of pineapples used the first time the iconic pizza was created.

Ed Sheeran adds new Perth show

DEMAND for Ed Sheeran tickets has seen the English pop superstar add another show to the Perth leg of his tour Down Under.

The second show will be held on March 2 — the night before what was originally his first show at the new Perth Stadium on March 3.

He has also added extra shows in Melbourne on March 9, Sydney on March 15 and on April 1 in Dunedin, New Zealand.

The boost in show numbers to 18 means Sheeran’s Divide world tour is the biggest in Australian and New Zealand music history.

Sheeran’s popularity has seen him smash the Australasian record for the largest number of stadium shows in one single tour.

Promoter Frontier Touring announced today that the additional shows meant “a phenomenal 18-date stadium run across Australia and New Zealand”.

His initial 14 shows were equal to AC/DC’s 2010 record.

“The announcement comes off the back of Ed selling more than 710,000 tickets by the conclusion of the first day of general public on-sale,” Frontier said.

“With these newly announced shows he will surpass Dire Straits’ long-standing record of an estimated 900,000 ticket sales from their 1986 Brothers In Arms tour.

“Ed has also set new records for the most stadium shows on one tour at Forsyth Barr in Dunedin with three shows and at Etihad in Melbourne with four shows.”

Scalpers came under fire this week after they tried to take advantage of Sheeran’s sold-out shows.

Fans risk having their tickets cancelled if they have been bought through unauthorised resellers.

The problem has also prompted the State Government to warn that profiteering will be outlawed.

“I’ve always loved coming to Australia and New Zealand,” Sheeran said today.
