The saga of alleged Australian drug mule Cassie Sainsbury continues to develop, with news of sex work, lies and threats on her life.
Rival programs 60 Minutes and Sunday Night both aired stories on the woman dubbed “Cocaine Cassie”, whose family has previously said was duped in Colombia while on a working holiday.
But Sainsbury’s lawyer Orlando Herran told the Nine Network’s 60 Minutes the 22-year-old was in financial trouble after problems with her fitness business when she answered a Craigslist ad offering a loan and trip to London.
He said the itinerary was changed at the last minute before Sainsbury met a mystery man, who showed her pictures of her family and fiance and made threats in Colombia.
“If you don’t get to fly we will be threatening or killing your family or you,” Mr Herran, who said the woman tried to back out of her return itinerary, told 60 Minutes.
“Cassandra isn’t a bad person. She is a young girl with a … mistake.”
The 60 Minutes program also revealed the personal trainer spent five months last year allegedly working as a sex worker at western Sydney brothel, Club 220.
A woman claiming to be a former colleague from the brothel said Sainsbury would fly in and out from Adelaide for work stints at the club.
She said other sex workers gave Sainsbury money when she falsely claimed her mother had died.
“Cassandra is not the naive, sweet little blonde girl that everybody thinks she is,” the unidentified woman said.
The South Australian’s story has attracted significant media attention, with her fiance Scott Broadbridge exclusively telling the Seven Network’s Sunday Night he believes Sainsbury is innocent, despite lying to him about her work and her trip.
Mr Broadbridge said she had told him she was working for her uncle’s cleaning company before he sold the business to a mysterious couple named Karen and June, who allegedly paid for her trip to Colombia.
But Neil Sainsbury denied owning a cleaning business, believing his niece was a drug mule.
Her father Stuart agreed, saying his daughter’s story didn’t add up.
Sainsbury is being held at a Bogota prison, after 5.8kg of cocaine were allegedly found inside 18 headphone cases inside her luggage at El Dorado International Airport in April.
Mr Broadbridge, who is being investigated by Australian police, denied he or his fiancee had ever been drug dealers, saying “we are both against drugs”.
“I don’t know if the business she worked for set her up from Colombia. But, you know, I believe, she was, you know, I guess, set up as a drug mule without her knowledge,” he said.
Sainsbury’s lawyers launched a last-ditch application for an injunction against the Sunday Night program in a Sydney court on Sunday, but it was rejected.
Seven News said she wanted to stop phone conversations between herself and Mr Broadbridge being aired, with the court being told they were recorded without her knowledge and compromised her and her family’s safety.
Nine’s 60 Minutes reporter Liam Bartlett says he has been told Colombian authorities want to speak to Mr Broadbridge as a person of interest in the investigation.
Sainsbury faces 20 years in prison.
Her mother Lisa Evans says she believes her daughter is innocent.
“It goes against everything she stands for,” she told 60 Minutes.
“I believe she’s a 100 per cent innocent and I always will.”
