A Federal Police raid on a property development firm in Sydney’s exclusive eastern suburbs turned violent on Wednesday when it descended into an all-out brawl.
Federal Police officers were forced to arrest high-profile businessman Michael Teplitsky, 48, when he allegedly attacked a photographer during the dramatic raid on his property development firm, Rommark.
Teplitsky’s socialite friend Olivia Korner also involved herself in the brawl when she pulled the hair of a nearby reporter, Fairfax reports.
The raid was part of a wider investigation into a major tax evasion scheme allegedly involving Adam Cranston, 30, and ensnaring his father, the Australian Taxation Office Deputy Commissioner Michael Cranston.
Fairfax reports the investigation was in relation to someone who was allegedly associated with Mr Teplisky’s firm.
Mr Teplitsky reportedly threatened a photographer before crash tackling him, saying: ‘If that photographer doesn’t stop taking my photo in one second I’m going to lose it’ and ‘I don’t care if [the police] are here, I will do it’, Fairfax reports.
Six federal police officers were forced to subdue Mr Teplitsky before his arrest.
The police said no charges were officially laid against Mr Teplitsky, despite the fact he was arrested at the scene.
The prestigious property development firm, Rommark, is behind projects including Ocean breeze at Bondi, Genoa at Bondi Junction and the ongoing development of St Margaret’s at Surry Hills.
The raid was part of an alleged $165 million tax fraud syndicate but there is no suggestion Mr Teplitsky or his company Rommark were involved – instead someone who was allegedly associated with the firm, Fairfax reports.
Officers searched the Double Bay office on Wednesday, scouring private documents late into the night.
The Federal Police said the investigation at Rommark was not directly linked to the wider-scale tax syndicate investigation.
Police confirmed a number of search warrants were conducted across Sydney as part of the wider investigation.
Nine people have been arrested as part of the eight-month investigation into tax fraud.
