Former AFL star Justin Murphy has been jailed for six months after pleading guilty to stalking, threatening to kill and maiming his ex-girlfriend Jill Scott with a blowtorch.
The 41-year-old plead guilty to a total of 28 charges, and was taken into custody when he appeared at a Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, reported 7News.
Murphy had claimed he had been impacted by his dependence on ice and the party drug GHB, but Magistrate John O’Callaghan declared his behaviour towards Ms Scott ‘appalling and unacceptable’.
The former sportsman attacked his ex-girlfriend with a blowtorch in November 2016, causing her to lose her middle finger.
‘I have flashes for life, dreams for life. I wake up screaming,’ she told 7 News.
‘Evil. That’s pretty much the word for it.’
The multiple charges Murphy faced included unlawful assault, aggravated burglary and making threats to kill.
His lawyer argued Murphy had taken steps to curb his ‘significant’ problem with ice by completing a three-month rehabilitation program.
In sentencing, Magistrate O’Callaghan said he could not accept Murphy’s actions towards Ms Scott.
‘I cannot accept violence against women. I cannot accept this campaign of terror you put this lady through,’ he said.
