Bruce Highway shut down after ‘homemade bomb’ found

Bomb squad officers were investigating the suspicious device on Bruce Highway, south of Cairns, and x-rays confirmed it to be ‘consistent with an explosive device’.

Both sides of Bruce Highway at Edmonton, south of Cairns, were closed since a passing driver found the item about 11.45am, with detours in place.

Traffic was at a standstill along the highway with police putting up detour signs and urging motorists to re-consider any non-essential travel on the road.

Further testing will now be done to accurately determine what is contained within the item.

Both lanes of the Bruce Highway remain closed from Foster Road, Mount Sheridan to Mill Road as officers respond to the incident.
