Gastro outbreak, Brisbane: Seven dead in aged care facility

THE death toll from a gastro outbreak at a Brisbane aged care home has risen to seven.

The outbreak first hit several weeks ago, with two residents at the Regis aged care facility in Yeronga dying.

Claims of poor hygiene and understaffing from families of residents were denied by Regis, which also denied gastro was the cause of the initial deaths.

Regis confirmed the outbreak and said controls had been in place since July 28 but said the gastro outbreak did not kill the patients.

The centre has been in lockdown for 26 days, and five more residents, including two last Friday, have died, according to Channel Nine news in Brisbane.

Regis released a statement saying it was “pleased that the gastro outbreak is nearing completion”, according to reports.

Power cuts affect 140,000 in Los Angeles after fire at storage plant

More than 140,000 residents were left without power after a blaze at a power plant in Los Angeles.

Power had to be cut to allow firefighters to battle the fire at the Los Angeles department of water and power plant in North San Fernando Valley.

More than 80 firefighters fought the fire which broke out in a storage vault containing 50,000-60,000 gallons of mineral oil.

Local people reported the sound of an explosion but this has not been confirmed.

Much of the blaze on Saturday was out within two hours but firefighters were expected to stay at the scene to monitor possible flare-ups.

Drivers in the area were advised to take extra care as many roads would be without lights due to the power outage.

#F1 McLaren woes as Alonso’s engine fails at Bahrain GP

SAKHIR, Bahrain (AP) — Fernando Alonso must already be counting down the days until the Indianapolis 500, given how frustrating Formula One has become for the Spaniard.

The two-time F1 champion is making his IndyCar debut on May 28, and it probably can’t come soon enough.

Alonso’s engine failed early into qualifying on Saturday for the Bahrain Grand Prix, pushing him to 15th place on the grid for Sunday’s race.

Neither Alonso nor his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne won a point in the first two races of the season. With the Belgian driver two places behind Alonso on the grid, that is unlikely to change here.

“It will be a long, hot and difficult one for both our drivers,” McLaren’s race director Eric Boullier said. “But that’s the hand they’ve currently been dealt, and they’ll play it as best they can.”

McLaren struggled all of last season after switching back to Honda engines, finishing sixth in the constructors’ championship and with no podium finishes for the once-dominant team.

Alonso had looked reasonably secure in the first part of qualifying, and was about to start the second part on Saturday — known as Q2 — when he climbed out of his car and called it quits.
