Ivanka Trump: ‘beautiful to see’ anti-racism march in Boston. Pres Trump: “many anti-police agitators in Boston”

Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who is Jewish, tweeted Saturday night: “It was beautiful to see thousands of people across the USA come together today to peacefully denounce bigotry, racism & anti-Semitism. We must continue to come together, united as Americans!”

Thousands of anti-racism demonstrators flooded the streets of Boston Saturday, dwarfing a gathering of white nationalists in the city and triggering scuffles with police but avoiding the serious violence that marred a similar event a week earlier in Virginia.

While Boston saw no repeat of the violence that erupted last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, isolated scuffles between police and protesters prompted President Donald Trump to weigh in, with a tweet intoning against the “many anti-police agitators in Boston.”

But as protesters began departing central Boston without major incident later Saturday, he followed up with a more positive tone.

“I want to applaud the many protestors in Boston who are speaking out against bigotry and hate,” he tweeted.

“Our country will soon come together as one!”

Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told a press conference that while there were people “who came here to cause problems,” authorities were able to maintain order and keep the two sides apart. He credited a unit specially trained for crowd control.

“I thought they did a good job of moving that crowd,” Evans said. “Sometimes it doesn’t look pretty, but that’s what they’re trained for.”

Jeremy Corbyn; if history is indeed repeating itself, he will be the Prime Minister

It may be no accident that John McDonnell – one of the principal architects of Labour’s remarkable resurgence – and Jeremy Corbyn sound like they’ve been following the 1974 example, the last time Britain had a hung parliament and the formation of a minority government. They’re of an age to remember it well. McDonnell often speaks of it. They’ve been doing their history homework.

You can see the attractions of this story from long ago, and some uncanny parallels. The then Tory prime minister, Ted Heath, had a reputation of buckling under pressure, chaotic decision-making and a taste for U-turns, an interesting echo from history. Faced with a miners’ strike, he decided to strengthen his mandate – he already had a working majority of 40 plus and another 18 months for his government to run – so called an early snap election. He asked the question “Who Governs Britain?” so he could take on the unions; just like May wanted one to take on the EU. Both found that the British public decided the general election wasn’t going to be about that but rather about the economy, public services and the usual issues. Labour won on a pretty left-wing manifesto.

White House lawyers are ‘consulting impeachment experts’

White House lawyers have started consulting experts on impeachment as murmurs of Donald Trump’s removal from office have grown louder in recent weeks, it has been reported.

Lawyers in the White House counsel’s office appear to be taking the distant possibility of impeachment seriously, having reached out to experts in the past week to gather more information, CNN reported.

While the gravity of the investigations into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia has escalated with the appointment of Robert Mueller as special counsel, impeachment remains a long shot, especially given the GOP control of both the House and Senate.

The White House issued a brief statement saying the reports were ‘not true’.

An attorney close to White House counsel Don McGahn also questioned the reports, saying it wasn’t something he would authorize.

Rep. Al Green, (D-TX), said on the House floor on Wednesday: ‘The President must be impeached.

But Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), urged Democrats to take a more restrained approach, saying: ‘No one ought to, in my view, rush to embrace the most extraordinary remedy that involves the removal of the president from office

He also warned that calls for impeachment could ‘be perceived as an effort to nullify the election by other means.’

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstsein wrote a letter on Wednesday tasking Mueller with investigating links ‘between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump.’

The wide scope also includes ‘any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation’ – which would appear to include any efforts Trump may have made to interfere with the FBI’s investigation of National Security Advisor Mike Flynn.

‘I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability,’ Mueller said in a statement.

Lawyer Michael Cohen also visited the White House to discuss the possibility of hiring personal attorneys for Trump, CNN reported.

And reports that a senior adviser was a ‘person of interest’  in a probe of possible collusion with Russia during last year’s election campaign emerged just as Trump jetted off to Saudi Arabia on his first foreign trip as president.

The Washington Post, citing sources familiar with the matter, did not identify the senior Trump adviser except to say that the person of interest was close to Trump, a Republican who entered the White House four months ago.

U.S. law enforcement uses the term ‘a person of interest’ to mean someone who is part of a criminal investigation but not arrested or formally accused of a crime. The person may be cooperating or have information of use to investigators.

The Limehouse Golem trailer goes on the hunt for a sinister Victorian killer

The Victorian murder mystery is a genre awash with potential thrills and chills, and The Limehouse Golem intends to take full advantage.

VIDEO LINK BELOW

Adapting Peter Ackroyd’s novel Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem, director Juan Carlos Medina is bringing to screen a crime film of epic Dickensian proportions, set around a series of gruesome murders in London’s Limehouse district.

In 1880, it was a place where death and sin lined every doorstep, from the misdemeanours of petty thieves to the vast criminal network operating in the area.

It’s here the film sets loose its serial murder, whose calling card sees Latin inscriptions smeared across the walls in the blood of his victims, in crimes so disturbing many in the area begin to believe them the work of the golem of Jewish legend.

Inspector Kildaire (Bill Nighy), however, is on the case, in a film which brings in fictionalised versions of historical characters to aid in its mystery, including music hall star Dan Leno, novelist George Gissing, and Karl Marx.

The film also stars Me and Earl and the Dying Girl‘s Olivia Cooke, alongside Douglas Booth, Eddie Marsan, and Daniel Mays.

Taliban kill at least 140 in base attack

As many 140 Afghan soldiers have been killed by Taliban attackers apparently disguised in military uniforms in what would be the deadliest assault ever on an Afghan military base.

One official in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, where the attack occurred on Friday, said on Saturday at least 140 soldiers were killed and many others wounded.

As many as 10 Taliban fighters, dressed in Afghan army uniforms and driving military vehicles, talked their way onto the base and opened fire on soldiers eating dinner and leaving a mosque after Friday prayers, officials say.

The attackers used rocket-propelled grenades and rifles.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a statement the attack was retribution for the recent killing of several senior Taliban leaders in northern Afghanistan.

The NATO-led military coalition deploys advisers to the base where the attack occurred to train and help the Afghan forces but coalition officials said no international troops were involved in the attack.

NSW weather: 16 Flood rescues amid deluge on north coast with 200mm of rain expected –

At least 16 flood rescues are carried out in northern New South Wales, as heavy rainfall in the region causes flash flooding and multiple road closures.

At least 16 flood rescues have been carried out in the north of New South Wales, as heavy rainfall in the region causes flash flooding and multiple road closures.

Caroline Ortel from the Clarence-Nambucca State Emergency Service (SES) said the rescues had been the result of people ignoring flood warnings.

“We’ve had several flood rescues, all of them based on people driving into floodwaters,” she said.

“So we say it over and over again, that people shouldn’t drive walk or play in floodwater. If it’s flooded, forget it,” she said.
