Qantas London flights to now go through Singapore instead of Dubai |
The airline announced this morning it is applying to extend its partnership with Emirates for another five years in a move that will see flying kangaroo switch its Sydney to London A380 service from Dubai to Singapore to capitalise on the fast-growing Asian market.
The new deal will see Australia’s national airline re-route its Sydney to London A380 service via Singapore and upgrade its existing Melbourne to Singapore flight from an A330 to an A380 from March 25.
The renewal is subject to regulatory approval but will give Qantas passengers the choice of hubbing through Perth, Singapore or Dubai with Emirates on trips to Europe.
Perth passengers will be able to fly non-stop to London on the Qantas 787 from March or via Singapore to connect with the Qantas A380 or to Europe on a code-share flight with Emirates via Dubai.
Qantas had already announced that it was replacing its Melbourne to Dubai to London service with its ultra-long-haul Melbourne to Perth to London Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights.

Mourners wear white to farewell SBS football legend Les Murray: State funeral Today
Friends, family and members of the football community are preparing to farewell SBS football legend Les Murray in a state funeral in Sydney.
The service will commence at 11:00 (AEST) at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney.
It will be broadcast live on SBS from 10:50 – 12:15, plus streamed online, on The World Game app and via Facebook live.
Members of the public have been welcomed to attend the service, with all attendees encouraged to wear white to honour a multicultural world.
The service will begin with a hymn before a flower ceremony in which family members will place flowers in a vase as a gesture of hope.

Aust has ‘contingencies’ for Nth Korea war, but he’s refused to say. LOL
The prime minister told reporters in Canberra the government is very alert to the unfolding situation, and it’s constantly under review.
“We obviously plan for all contingencies … but I’m not going to get into speculative territory,” he said on Thursday.
Mr Turnbull again urged Pyongyang to come to its senses and praised the latest tough sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop moved to reassure Australians the country wouldn’t automatically be drawn into any war between North Korea and the United States.
She’s also downplayed Donald Trump’s threatening words to North Korea, after the US president threatened Pyongyang with “fire and fury”.
Ms Bishop echoed Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s claim the president was speaking in language that Kim Jong-un could understand, because clearly he didn’t understand diplomatic language.
“The United States is entitled to defend itself and its ally, but the strategy is to force North Korea, through diplomatic and economic means, to stop its illegal ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons programs,” she told the Nine Network on Thursday.
Ms Bishop says Australia has been in “constant discussion” with the US over the issue, but it wouldn’t necessarily be drawn into conflict should matters escalate that far.
“We were not a party, in the legal sense, to the (Korean War) armistice so there is no automatic trigger for Australia to be involved,” she told ABC radio.

‘We respectfully disagree’: 56 retired generals slam Trump’s transgender ban
Fifty-six retired US generals, admirals and other senior officers have voiced opposition to President Donald Trump’s announcement of a ban on transgender military service, saying it would be disruptive and degrade readiness.
Also on Tuesday, the US Coast Guard commandant, Admiral Paul Zukunft, offered support for transgender members of his service.
The letter and comments were the latest push-back from retired or active military members after Trump said on Twitter he would ban transgender people from serving in the military “in any capacity”, reviving a ban that had ended in 2016.
Trump’s announcement appealed to some in his conservative political base, but it created vast uncertainty for active-duty and reserve transgender service members, who say they number in the thousands.

UK Election: Possibly one of the biggest upsets in UK political history
The final UK election exit poll has stunned the country, after all conventional wisdom pointed towards a victory for Theresa May, who herself was looking to gain a sweeping majority.
Many polls predicted a crushing defeat for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, with the Conservatives gaining a considerable majority. Others were less generous towards Theresa May, and showed a dramatic narrowing between the two parties as the campaigns progressed. But even then, when the numbers were relatively favourable for Labour, the Conservatives were still out in front.
If you cast your mind back before the snap election was called, you may remember the double-digit leads the Tories held over Labour, and the huge advantage in popularity May had over Corbyn. With these in mind, many Labour supporters were resigned to the fact they were never going to win, and had their eyes on simply reducing Theresa May’s majority.
But if the exit poll is accurate, this election could be one of the biggest political upsets in British history, beating even Brexit. The EU referendum that Leave won by 52 per cent was a huge upset, but was backed up by a number of polls – and predicted by some commentators – in the lead up to the vote. In comparison, almost no-one saw this election exit poll result coming.

Police move in on arena bomber’s ‘network’
Salman Abedi, a 22-year-old British-born national of Libyan descent, was identified by police as the suicide bomber in the attack on Manchester Arena, which killed at least 22 people, including children, on Monday night.
New details about Abedi, who is believed to have been killed, emerged Wednesday — including alleged links to terror groups, his troubles in Manchester after the death of a friend, his travel to Libya with a younger brother and their father’s attempts to keep them from returning to the UK.
“It is very clear that this is a network we are investigating,” Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said.

Arrest in Libya
Home Secretary Amber Rudd told the BBC that Abedi was on the radar of intelligence services.
Abedi was in Libya for three weeks and returned just days before his attack, US military officials assigned to US Africa Command told CNN. They said that information had been shared between US and British intelligence services, but a full analysis was underway to put those details in context.
In Libya, a brother of Abedi — identified as 20-year-old Hashim Ramadan Abu Qassem al-Abedi — was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of links to ISIS, according to a statement from a Tripoli militia known as the Special Deterrence Force. Nominally under the control of the Interior Ministry, the militia published the statement on its Facebook page.
The younger Abedi was allegedly planning a terror attack in Libya when arrested, the militia reported. He was picked up while allegedly receiving a money transfer from Salman Abedi.
CNN has not been able to independently verify the details from the militia. The UK Foreign Office, Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police had no immediate comment on the reported arrest in Libya.
The militia claims that the younger Abedi admitted knowledge about the Manchester attack and was in Britain for its planning. The statement also said he left the UK in mid-April and had been under surveillance about a month and a half.

Sons got in trouble?
Abedi’s father brought Salman and his younger brother to Libya from Manchester about a month ago because the young men were getting in trouble in England, a family friend in Libya told CNN. The brothers wanted revenge for a friend killed by a gang, according to the family friend, who asked not to be identified.
The father, a police officer whose name is Ramadan, took his sons’ passports so they could not travel, the friend said.
The friend and another source in Manchester’s Libyan community said Salman got his passport back after telling his father he was going on a pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. He returned to England instead.
Abedi carried out the attack three days after returning to the UK, said the family friend, who described the father as “shaking” after learning of his son’s involvement.
US military officials said American and UK intelligence services, along with the Africa Command, are looking at the possibility Abedi could have met with ISIS members or operatives from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, a North African militant organization.
Rudd earlier slammed the US for leaking several details on the attack investigation as “irritating” and asked them to stop.
French Interior Minister Gérard Collomb also revealed some details, telling BFM-TV that Abedi had “proven links to ISIS,” without elaborating.
Rudd refused to respond to Collomb’s comments that Abedi was believed to have been to Syria. She also refused to elaborate on reports in Arab media Abedi’s father had links to Islamist rebel groups in Libya.
Security boosted
On Wednesday night, Manchester United beat Ajax 2-0 to win the Europa League soccer tournament as fans in the stands in Stockholm, Sweden, remembered the victims with banners saying, “Manchester stands against terrorism.”
The UK will hold a minute of silence in remembrance of the victims at 11 a.m. Thursday — two days after Prime Minister Theresa May announced that Britain’s threat level had been raised from “severe” to “critical,” and warned that a “further attack may be imminent.”

This singing star has been lying low for months but it seems she has had company.
Taylor Swift is reportedly dating English actor Joe Alwyn, and has been sneaking around London in disguise in a bid to keep their romance under wraps.
The 27-year-old American hitmaker and the 26-year-old actor are already very serious, The Sun has claimed.
The pair have reportedly been dating for ‘several’ months.
A source told the paper: ‘Taylor and Joe are the real deal, this is a very serious relationship. But after what happened with Tom Hiddleston, they were determined to keep it quiet.’
According to an insider, the songstress has gone to great lengths to keep her romance to the privately educated actor under wraps.
The star has spent a lot of time in the Joe’s native London but has resorted to wearing a wig to keep a low profile.
Taylor has even rented a house in North London where Joe is reportedly a frequent guest.

Two months after his film debut, he landed another major role, in an adaptation of Julian Barnes’ Booker-winning The Sense of an Ending.
He has also appeared in a model shoot with Gigi Hadid, a close friend of the singer.
Joe was educated at the fee-paying City of London School, where Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe also attended, as did Skandar Keynes, who starred in the Chronicles of Narnia film series.
He defended his private schooling, saying: ‘I got there on a combination of scholarship and bursary. And because it offers bursaries and scholarships, you had people from all over. I liked that.’

First black female pilots to fly together for Delta
Two women made history this week for Delta Airlines by being the first two black female pilots to fly together in a cockpit.
First Officer Dawn Cook reached out to fellow pilot Stephanie Johnson after learning she would be flying out of Detroit on Sunday. The two organized the historic flight and posed for beaming selfies.
Johnson is also the first black female captain for Delta.
Johnson had previously been interviewed by Delta as a part of their ‘Very Own Heroes’ series during Black History Month in which they profile outstanding employees that pioneer diversity at the company.
