Thousands of Woolworths customers have been double billed for purchases made in March

WOOLWORTHS has confirmed an issue with its payments provider has caused customers around the country to be charged again for purchases made in March.

Customers flooded to the supermarket’s Facebook page on Monday to complain, with some reporting hundreds of dollars missing from their bank accounts. The issue affects both online and in-store purchases. Woolworths could not confirm how many customers had been affected, but it is believed to be in the thousands.

“Today I have been double billed by Woolworths for transactions from the 11th of March, Woolworths have stolen almost $300 and I want my money back,” wrote Leanne Stewart. Donna Carthey added: “Any idea when the money you took out of my account incorrectly will be repaid?”

Kylie Willey said she noticed $245 missing from her account this morning for transactions on the 11th, 12th and 13th of March. “Pretty poor service, Woolworths. You stuffed up! How many times has this happened and I’ve missed it?” she wrote. “How safe are our cards with you that you can re-access them months later?”

Thomas Miller said his bank account had been debited for a transaction on the 3rd of March. “The only reason I noticed this was the account is inactive with a zero balance which suddenly was a negative,” he wrote. “The bank says it is Woolworths fault/problem. Please explain how and why this has happened? How many times has this happened in the past?”

Cat Steele wrote: “Can someone please tell me why Woolworths took money out of my account today with a date of 13th of March? Why do you still have my card details four months later after this supposed transaction? What the hell is going on? This is not okay.”

Emma Bell added: “I love paying for my groceries twice, Woolworths — especially six months later! Good work.”

A Woolworths spokeswoman said: “We have received confirmation from Cuscal, one of our payment processors that service financial institutions, that due to an error at their data centre a limited number of Woolworths customers may have received incorrect transactions on accounts processed by Cuscal.

“We are working closely with Cuscal and can confirm any payment errors will be corrected as soon as possible. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause customers. If further information is required please contact 1300 767 969.”

Greens risk of losing 3rd senator to section 44 as doubt emerges over Andrew Bartlett

The Greens could be at risk of losing a third senator to section 44 of the Constitution.

The return of former Democrats leader Andrew Bartlett to the Senate could be short-lived, with the Greens at risk of losing a third senator to the same section of the constitution that claimed Larissa Waters and Scott Ludlam.

Mr Bartlett, whose path back to parliament as a Green opened up after Ms Waters fell foul of section 44 of the constitution, could be blocked by a subsection that forbids candidates from holding an “office of profit”, as he was working for a university at the time of his nomination.

Ms Waters, born in Canada, and Scott Ludlam, born in New Zealand, both resigned in the past week after discovering they held dual-citizenship, which is not allowed under section 44 of the constitution.

The former Democrat senator was second on the Queensland Greens ticket and is expected to take Ms Waters’ place in a recount.

Constitutional law expert and dean of law at the University of New South Wales, George Williams, said university employment was a “grey zone”, and carried a risk the High Court would rule it a breach of the constitution.

“There is no doubt there is a risk,” he said.

“But it is yet another reason which shows why this provision needs reforming.”

Mr Bartlett said he believed he was in the clear despite working as a research fellow with the Australian National University at the time of his nomination.

A federal investigation is underway into claims the Medicare numbers of Australians are being sold on the dark web.

Human Services Minister Alan Tudge said the alleged data breach is being taken seriously and has been referred to Australian Federal Police.

‘The security of personal data is an extremely serious matter,’ he said in a statement on Tuesday.

The government’s concern stems from a report in The Guardian on how one of its own reporters was able to buy his Medicare card number from a ‘darknet’ trader for less than $30.

Mr Tudge said he’d been assured the information obtained was ‘not sufficient’ to access personal health records.

‘The only information claimed to be supplied by the site was the Medicare card number,’ he said.

But it’s not the first time cyber security issues have been on the department’s radar.

‘Investigations into activities on the dark web occur continually,’ Mr Tudge said.

The fire near the town of Brian Head is 8 percent contained and has destroyed at least 13 homes, fire officials said. About 1,000 firefighters and support personnel are battling the blaze, which started June 17 by someone using a torch to burn weeds.

More than 1,500 people have been evacuated from several hundred homes and cabins, fire information officer Erin Darboven said Saturday night. Evacuation orders were given in nearby alpine communities that are generally known for second homes as a weekend getaway for Las Vegas residents.

High winds and hot weather continue to intensify the fire but conditions are expected to improve Sunday before winds return Monday.

Officials said firefighters are trying to fully extinguish hot spots in the southwest corner in order to allow Brian Head residents to return.

Three notorious Sydney gangland brothers have received lengthy jail terms over the “outlandish and lawless” violence that erupted in Sydney in 2013.

Gang leader Farhad Qaumi has been jailed for at least 43 years for his role in the fatal “violent underworld rampage” that erupted in western Sydney in late 2013, and his two brothers have received shorter but significant terms.

The 34-year-old Brothers 4 Life Blacktown chapter leader was jailed on Friday for a string of crimes including manslaughter and a contract murder and Mumtaz Qaumi, 32, was jailed for at least 36 years for offences including the two fatal shootings.

Describing the violence as “outlandish and lawless”, Justice Peter Hamill also jailed Jamil Qaumi, 25, for at least 21 years for his crimes, which included manslaughter.

Farhad Qaumi was sentenced for 15 offences including the December 2013 contract murder of debt collector Joseph Antoun at Strathfield and the October 2013 manslaughter of Mahmoud Hamzy at Revesby Heights.

In setting a maximum of 60 years, the judge said Qaumi was the “undisputed, and feared, leader of the B4 Blacktown” who, more often than not used others to do his bidding.

“There was evidence he aspired to ‘take over Sydney’.”

Mumtaz Qaumi received a maximum of 50 years, while the youngest brother’s maximum was 30 years.
