Two German U.N. Peacekeepers Killed in Mali Helicopter Crash
Mali is home to the world’s deadliest active U.N. mission
A U.N. peacekeeping helicopter crashed Wednesday in the desert in northern Mali and two German peacekeepers were killed, U.N. officials said.
U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said the crash took place south of Tabankort in Mali’s northern Gao region. He said officials were still working to verify details of the crash, including its cause and possible casualties.
“Preliminary indications show there was a technical failure. Investigations are opened to determine the exact circumstances of the crash,” said a statement by the U.N. mission in Mali. “The helicopter had two peacekeepers on board who, unfortunately, both died.”
Mali is home to the world’s deadliest active U.N. mission. Haq said due to the confrontations on the ground with radical jihadists, the crash site would have to be secured before personnel could reach the scene.
Ahmad Makaila, a spokesman based in Mali with the U.N. mission known as MINUSMA, said earlier that two Germans were on board the helicopter and later confirmed that they were killed.

The Bristol refill-reuse bottle campaign that is spreading across Europe
Scrambling down the muddy riverbank, Natalie Fee frowns as she looks out across the River Avon. Three weeks earlier she had spent a day with other volunteers collecting hundreds of plastic bottles that were littering the river as it made its way to the sea. Now a new tide of plastic has returned.
“In a sense it is dispiriting,” says Fee as she starts to gather up the bottles strewn along the bank. “In another way, it just highlights how important it is we keep pushing ahead with the work we are doing.”
Fee, 38, is the driving force behind a campaign which aims to cut the millions of plastic bottles that end up in the world’s oceans each year. The Refill campaign persuades businesses to sign up to a scheme allowing people to refill their water bottles on their premises rather than throw them away.
Fee launched the project in 2015 and a couple of months later 200 businesses in Bristol had signed up. Now towns and cities across the UK and Europe are joining.
“All we are doing is linking people who want water with businesses and organisations who have taps and are happy for them to be used, but it has really taken off,” Fee said.

Ant & Dec’s Ant to rehab —problems with substance abuse, prescription drugs and booze
TV IDOL Ant McPartlin last night checked into rehab after confessing to problems with substance abuse, prescription drugs and booze.
The Britain’s Got Talent presenter, 41, wept as he revealed his problems to wife Lisa and co-star Declan Donnelly.
Ant will spend at least two months in a clinic.
Yesterday he told The Sun on Sunday: “The first step is to admit to yourself you need help.”
Courageous Ant told how his depression led to an addiction to prescription drugs and battles with substance and alcohol abuse.
The much-loved star, one half of Britain’s top-paid telly duo, confessed: “I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I am truly sorry.
“I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends for helping me through this really difficult time.
“I’ve spoken out because I think it’s important that people ask for help if they’re going through a rough time and get the proper treatment to help their recovery.”

Supercar Will Davison has suspected lower back fracture following 12-car pile-up
Racing driver Will Davison has been discharged from hospital after sustaining a suspected lower back fracture in what organisers say was the biggest crash in V8 Supercars history at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.
The Tekno Racing driver copped a heavy hit in yesterday’s 12-car pile-up.
Race officials said the unprecedented crash caused about $2 million in damage.
Doctors said they suspected Davison had fractured his lower back and further scans would confirm or disprove that diagnosis.
His manager, David Segal, said the 34-year-old, who was in Launceston General Hospital, suffered belt trauma.
“While he is in reasonable spirits, he’s had a pretty tough night and he’s not feeling fabulous,” he said…

NSW weather: Severe thunderstorm bears down on flood-hit areas of state’s north –
Severe thunderstorms, potentially causing flash floods, are set to hit areas of northern NSW still recovering from days of heavy rain and flooding.
In an updated warning issued at 6:46pm the Bureau of Meteorology said storms were likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall over Walgett, Burren Junction, Lightning Ridge, Brewarrina, Collarenebri, Weilmoringle and Enngonia.
Warnings for the Northern Rivers, Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Tablelands districts were cancelled.
Forecaster Gabrielle Woodhouse said some parts of northern NSW had already been inundated.
“We saw 42 millimetres in just under an hour at Tuckurimba, and for the rest of the afternoon we’re still expecting showers to persist and thunderstorms through that north-eastern part of NSW,” she said.
“But we’re also going to see rain and thunderstorms develop further in the northern inland area.”
Heavy rain that has already fallen in northern NSW this weekend saw hundreds of people cut off, evacuations ordered and more than 20 people rescued from cars.
