Attack on campus at Australian National University, Canberra

A MAN has been taken into custody after several people were attacked on the Canberra campus of the Australian National University.

Reports suggested the attacks were random in nature.

The university released a statement saying a student entered an ANU tutorial room near the Copland Lecture Theatre and assaulted four other students around 9.15am.

ABC reported that the students were attacked with a baseball bat.

Early reports suggested the attacks were random in nature, but the student newspaper Woroni reported that the man “appeared to attack students of Asian appearance”…

Woomera hosts secret hypervelocity missile tests; CLIP

AUSTRALIA has quietly concluded a set of test flights of a missile capable of burning through the skies at more than 10,000km/h — and still changing course.

Any missile — or aircraft — capable of moving at such speeds will have been and gone before any defensive system could react.

And while China and Russia have both been boasting of their own advances in the field, Australia has also been working away with the United States to perfect the technology.

Defence minister Marise Payne says in a statement released on her website that the $54 million Hypersonic International Flight Research Experimentation (HiFIRE) tests recently wrapped up in the skies above the remote South Australian town of Woomera.

By definition, hypersonic speeds are any above Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound), or 6174km/h.

“Hypersonic flight is more than five times the speed of sound and has the potential to revolutionise air travel, making it faster and cheaper to travel around the world and into space,” Ms Payne says.

“There are key military applications of this technology and by understanding hypersonic flight, the Australian Defence Force will be in a better position to respond to future threats.”

REACHING FOR THE SKY

Australia and the United States have been working in partnership on hypervelocity flight for almost a decade. The first launch of one of its test vehicles was conducted in 2009, with subsequent tests including 2012 and 2016.

Tops speeds obtained have reportedly been as high as Mach 8 (9878km/h).

But controlled hypersonic flight has proven to be a serious challenge.

A series of tests around the world have failed with vehicles becoming unstable before tumbling through the skies and breaking up.

SPIELBERG, Austria — Lewis Hamilton will receive a five-place grid drop from wherever he qualifies at the Austrian Grand Prix after his Mercedes team incurred a penalty for fitting a new gearbox to his car ahead of qualifying.

Under the regulations, a drivers’ gearbox has to last six consecutive races and the change to Hamilton’s car in Austria broke that cycle. As a result, the highest he can hope to qualify on Saturday is fifth (assuming other drivers are not penalised moving him forward) giving him a tough challenge in Sunday’s race.

Western Bulldogs ruckman Tom Boyd takes leave to deal with clinical depression

Western Bulldogs premiership hero Tom Boyd has been granted leave to have treatment for clinical depression.

The Bulldogs released a statement on Wednesday, revealing the ruckman-forward had been dealing with the mental illness for some time.

“Tom has managed his illness in conjunction with the Bulldogs’ medical staff for an extended period and will continue to receive the club’s full support as he works through this challenge,” the Bulldogs said.

“Tom has indicated a desire to return to playing as soon as possible and the club will work closely with Tom and the Bulldogs’ medical staff to determine a suitable time for reintegration into the training program.

“The club will continue to provide an extensive support framework to help Tom manage his illness and asks for the respect for Tom’s position during this time.”

Front National leader accuses centrist rival of being weak on terror as she temporarily steps aside as head of party

Far-right French presidential candidate, Marine Le Pen, has attacked her centrist rival Emmanuel Macron, suggesting he is a “hysterical, radical Europeanist” who is weak on jihadi terror.

Her tirade came as the country’s demoralised mainstream parties threw their weight behind her opponent on the first day of campaigning for the presidential runoff on 7 May.

Announcing she was stepping aside temporarily from the presidency of the Front National to be “above partisan considerations” and devote herself to the race for the Elysée, Le Pen said of Macron: “He is for total open borders. He says there is no such thing as French culture. There is not one area where he shows one ounce of patriotism.”

Le Pen finished second to the former investment banker in the first round vote on Sunday. In a symbolic gesture aimed at underlining the idea that the president of France should represent the whole country, not just their party, she told France 2 television she was now “no longer the president of the Front National. I am the candidate for the French presidency.”
