The introduction of paid parking later this year at what is soon to be Western Australia’s biggest shopping centre has drawn the ire of customers, who have threatened to shop locally or online to avoid paying.
Scentre Group, which owns and operates Westfield Shopping centres in Australia, confirmed paid parking after the first three hours will be introduced at its Cannington shopping centre.
The fees will kick in when a $350 million redevelopment is completed later this year.
License plate recognition technology is already being rolled out at carpark entry and exit points at Westfield Carousel.
It will be the first time Scentre Group has introduced paid parking in WA.
While Scentre Group would not be drawn on how much shoppers can expect to pay, its charges range from $5 to $40 at interstate car parks.
Shoppers will avoid payment if they park for less than three hours but will face escalating costs of up to $40 per day after that.

Hawaii volcano: Lava from Kilauea eruption creeps toward major power plant
Molten lava from the erupting Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island is creeping towards a geothermal power plant site, as workers rush to shut down the facility to prevent the uncontrollable release of toxic gases.
Key points:
A County spokeswoman said the lava had stalled at a berm on the property’s boundary
The plant has been closed since the May 3 eruption
Workers have already moved 227,124 litres of pentane
Crews worked into the night to cap the 11th and final well at the Puna Geothermal Venture (PGV) plant, which provides about 25 per cent of the Big Island’s power, as lava from an active fissure flowed around 250 metres from the nearest well pad, county and federal officials said.“County, state, and federal partners have been collaborating closely to monitor the situation and work with PGV to ensure the safety of the surrounding communities,” the county said.

Meghan Markle in racy scenes from a little-known film
Many actresses have film roles they would rather forget, and it appears Meghan Markle is no exception.
Years before her relationship with Prince Harry thrust her into the spotlight, the 35-year-old star was given a part in a little-known film called Random Encounters.
Scenes from the 2013 rom-com show Meghan slipping into silky lingerie and seducing a male co-star while in character as bed-hopping party girl, Mindy.
It came two years after she first appeared on screen in her breakout role as sultry paralegal Rachel Zane in US legal drama Suits.
In one particularly racy scene Meghan is seen undressing actor Michael Rady as her character tries to make a move in a dimly-lit apartment.
At other points in the film, Meghan flits across the screen in flirty summer dresses and party frocks.
Mindy’s promiscuous dating life could not be further removed from Meghan’s own committed relationship with Prince Harry, which appears to be growing ever more serious.
In the latest sign of their love for each other, Meghan attended Pippa Middleton’s wedding reception with her royal beau on Saturday evening.
Harry, 33, and his 35-year-old girlfriend drove down to Berkshire early on Saturday morning and the prince attended the wedding ceremony along with his brother William.
While Meghan skipped the ceremony she later joined her boyfriend for the evening reception.
She and Harry were photographed driving up to Middleton’s parents’ estate for the lavish soiree, which was off-limits to the press.
One photo, published Sunday, showed Harry at the wheel of an Audi with Meghan by his side.
But the smiling Suits star managed to largely duck the cameras to avoid stealing the limelight at the extravagant reception, where she witnessed a spectacular aerial display from a £100,000 glass marquee.
The happy couple joined guests to watch the historic Spitfire Mk V plane soar through the skies against a stunning sunset for ten minutes from the ‘porta palace’ erected in the Middleton’s back garden.
A live band belted out music from the marquee as guests parties the night away, including jazz renditions of Call on Me by Eric Prydz and The White Stripes Seven Nation Army, the Sun reported.
Rumours have been circulating for some weeks that Meghan had been invited to the nuptials despite Pippa’s ‘no ring, no bring’ policy.

Olympic gold medal Inge de Bruijn swims naked on Adam seeks Eve
She was once known for her eye-catching displays in the pool, but now former Olympic champion Inge de Bruijn is getting attention for an entirely different reason.
The 43-year-old former swimmer will appear completely naked as she attempts to find love on on Dutch reality TV show Adam seeks Eve.
Ms De Bruijn, who won four golds and set three world records during her career, is the star name taking part in a VIP spin-off of the show, which has been running for six seasons.
To make the programme she spent time with several non-famous men on a tropical island to see if there was a connection between the pair.
Ahead of the show, Ms De Bruijn told Dutch media about her ideal partner. She said: ‘He must be sweet, charming, caring, funny and a bit mysterious.’
Ms De Bruijn became the oldest person to receive an individual Olympic swimming gold medal when she won the 50m free in 2006
The episode featuring Ms De Bruijn will be broadcast on Dutch channel RTL5 on Thursday this week.
Ms De Bruijn said she hopes the show will lead to presenting opportunities on lifestyle and travel programmes, adding that she has loved travelling from a young age and once wanted to be an air stewardess.
The athlete is not shy about putting her body on display, having modelled for lingerie line Sapph since her 2007 retirement.
Ms De Bruijn made her swimming debut in 1991 at the World Aquatics Championships where she won bronze as part of the relay team, taking gold with the same team at the European LC Championships later that year.
At her Olympic debut, in 1992, she finished 8th in both the 100m freestyle and the 4x100m relay, choosing not to compete at the following tournament.
She returned at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where she won gold at the 50m and 100m freestyle and at the 100m butterfly, setting world records in all three events.
At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, she successfully defended the 50m freestyle medal, becoming the oldest person ever to achieve an individual gold medal in swimming, aged 31.
The overall record was surpassed by Anthony Ervin at Rio in 2016 as he won the 50m freestyle at the age of 36, but Ms De Bruijn retains the record for oldest woman to win an individual swimming gold.

Tom Cruise brings The Mummy to Sydney
Sydney almost came to a standstill on Monday night for one of the biggest stars in the world, as Tom Cruise walked the black carpet of the Australian premiere of his new movie The Mummy, alongside his co-star Russell Crowe.
Cruise stopped for selfies and signed autographs outside the State Theatre, proud to be promoting a movie that brought him back to his childhood watching classic movies such as Dracula and the original The Mummy from the 1930s starring Boris Karloff.
“I love these monster movies. For me as a kid, I remember on Friday night I was a little kid and I had three sisters and I was like ‘I wanna see this movie.’ And all the girls would sleep in one room and I was a boy so I had my own room, and they were like ‘OK you can see this but you’ve got to sleep in your own room tonight’,” Cruise told AAP on the black carpet.
“I remember being utterly terrified. I was six years old and banging on the door and then going in and sleeping on the floor of their room. And they’re beautiful films too, you look at the sets and the design of them and to have the opportunity to be a part of that vision of what this world is going to be is a lot of fun.”
The film is a darker, scarier reboot of The Mummy movies in which Cruise plays soldier of fortune Nick Morton, and the Mummy is female for the first time – a far cry from the Brendan Fraser series from the early noughties.
“You’re dealing with epic themes of darkness and light, and good and evil, in an enormously entertaining way … Because my character is a thief, he releases the Mummy thinking he’s going to get something out of it and he gets something but not quite what he expects,” he said.
There are certain demands when making a movie with Cruise. The other actors on set are expected to perform their own stunts just as Cruise does, including Crowe who has a fight scene with the star in the film.
“He’s (Cruise) absolutely an energiser bunny that fella, Mr 100 per cent,” Crowe told AAP at the premiere.
“When somebody flies through the air, that’s somebody flying through the air, and that back slam onto the desk, that’s full on, 100 per cent full speed.”
Cruise also performs an impressive stunt in zero-gravity for a plane crash sequence with his co-star, British actress Annabelle Wallis, who plays Egyptologist Jenny Halsey.
“You know, I’ve wanted to put that in a movie, that stunt, and I’ve been looking at it, kind of working on it and studying it and I was happy when I had the opportunity in this film to put that in there. And also my hat really goes off to Annabelle because that was not easy for her and she’s never done stunts before,” Cruise said.
This desire to throw himself into the action, again, harks back to his childhood.
“Since I was a little kid I did that, I used to write skits to entertain my family and physically, for me, I was the kind of kid that would climb the tallest trees at four-years-old,” he said.
Wallis was also at the Sydney premiere as was The Mummy herself, Sofia Boutella, who signed on to the movie before Cruise was onboard.
“I think it was about time to make the monster female. I think it’s fun, slightly unusual. It should be more normal,” Boutella said.
* The Mummy opens in Australian cinemas on June 8

Donald Trump held an orb and it instantly became a meme
When Trump rode a golden escalator, went to a male-only sword dance, and gave Muslim leaders a speech on Islam we thought his the first-leg of his foreign trip couldn’t get any weirder – we were wrong.
Last night Trump touched a glowing orb at the opening of the Global Centre for Combating Extremist Ideology in Saudi Arabia, and it was quite bizarre.
Pictured with Saudi King Salman bin Albdulaziz Al Saud and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, the three world leaders posed for cameras.
It sent the internet into frenzy.
Fake Trump tweets were made…
A lot of people say the Orb is evil. Stupid! I will negotiate with the Orb, make it work for us. Good deal for everyone!!! Hail the Orb.
just some billionaires gathering in the dark and holding a glowing orb. probably fine
oh you know, a bunch of plutocrats in a darkened room putting their hands on a glowing orb in a totally non-illuminati kind of way
Does this orb make my fingers look bigger?

So, what does Harry call her? Meghan Markle’s real name is actually RACHEL
So, what does Harry call her? Meghan Markle’s real name is actually RACHEL
She’s become one of the most recognised names on the planet since news of her romance with Prince Harry broke.
But if you were to mention Rachel Markle in conversation, it’s likely nobody would have a clue who you were talking about.
However, Rachel is in fact the name Prince Harry’s girlfriend was given by her parents and the more commonly known Meghan is actually her middle name.
Ironically, Meghan shares her birth name with the character that made her famous – Rachel Zane.
But it’s unclear whether anyone still refers to the star as Rachel, or whether her stage name has now permanently stuck.
MailOnline has contacted a representative for Meghan for further comment.
It’s not uncommon in Hollywood for stars to change their names to something a bit more glamorous or catchy, and Meghan is in good company with Katy Perry, John Legend and Miley Cyrus.
Storm Keating, wife of singer Ronan, is another public figure who chooses to use her middle name, having being born Sharyn Storm Uechtritz.
In a sign that her relationship with Prince Harry is growing ever more serious, the star attended Pippa Middleton’s wedding reception with her royal beau on Saturday evening.

Manus Island: Nine people injured in shooting, Immigration Department says
The Immigration Department has contradicted its earlier version of what happened during a shooting on Manus Island on Good Friday, revealing that nine people were injured as “many” shots were fired into the refugee compound by PNG defence force personnel.
Key points:
- Immigration Department Secretary Mike Pezzullo says “quite a number of shots” were fired into the compound
- An earlier statement originally said only one weapon was fired and no-one was injured
- Mr Pezzullo stressed to Senate estimates that the original statement was based on the information available at the time
A statement from the department originally said a weapon was fired into the air and no-one was injured.
But department secretary Mike Pezzullo corrected that today, telling a Senate Estimates hearing “it appears that the number of weapons deployed was greater than one”.
“Some shots — quite a number it seems — were fired laterally into the compound,” he said.
“Many more shots were fired.
“It was an unacceptable — from our point of view — breakdown in the discipline of the relevant personnel who went to their accommodation accessed those weapons and fired those rounds.”
He stressed to the committee that the original statement was based on the information available at the time.
Border Force Assistant Commissioner Kingsley Woodford-Smith told the Senate committee nine people were injured, none seriously.
He said five were service providers, one was a PNG Defence Force Officer, another was employed by the Immigration Department and two were asylum seekers living in the compound.
Truth behind Prince Harry’s ‘100-mile dash’ to pick Meghan up
Her appearance as his ‘plus one’ was almost as hotly anticipated as the bride itself.
So from the moment it emerged that Prince Harry was taking Meghan Markle, his increasingly serious girlfriend of almost a year to Pippa’s wedding, the royal was determined that no-one would catch a glimpse of her by his side.
His reasons were not as petulant that might at first seem.
Harry, fifth in line to the throne, knew that their appearance as a couple at a semi-official event in front of the world’s press would send the rumour mill in overdrive.
As one seasoned royal watcher said: ‘That would be tantamount to putting a ring on her finger and Harry wants to do this at his own pace.’
So following the US actress’s arrival in UK on Tuesday from Canada, where she is currently based, a plan was put into place (only marred by the fact that she was snapped by a photographer visiting a Soho fitness studio on Friday).
Harry, 33, and his 35-year-old girlfriend drove down to Berkshire early on Saturday morning and immediately headed for Engelfield House, the grand privately owned Elizabethan home where the wedding breakfast would be taking place.
According to well-placed sources, he and Meghan were given a private suite in the sprawling country house in which to refresh and change (contrary to reports which suggested that the prince made a 100-mile dash to London later in the afternoon to collect her from Kensington Palace).
Harry then made his way to the wedding ceremony at St Mark’s Church, also situated on the Engelfield estate, with his brother, Prince William, who had joined him along with his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, and their two children.
The couple were reunited afterward the wedding breakfast – which the prince attended on his own – but arrived together for the evening reception at the Middleton family home shortly after it started at 7pm, with Harry driving them himself.
According to one onlooker Harry and Meghan stayed until the early hours of the morning by which time many members of the wedding party were drunk.
The prince, however, was on his best behaviour.
I’ve seen Harry pretty smashed at more parties than I care to remember,’ said one source, ‘but this time he appeared to be on his best behaviour.
‘Surprisingly Harry didn’t drink that much as he was very gentlemanly around his girlfriend. It looked like he wanted to make a good impression on her.’
Harry and Meghan returned to Kensington Palace in the early hours of the morning together.
Meghan was photographed leaving the royal residence on Sunday morning, dressed down in a baseball cap in the back of a taxi.
It is believed she was due to catch a flight back to Toronto from Heathrow airport where is due back on set of the hit legal drama Suits this week.

UPDATE: Explosion at Bangkok hospital 24 people injured, weeks after shopping centre blasts
- Bomb blast in Bangkok hospital injures 24 people on Monday morning
- Police found traces of a battery and electric wiring used to make the bomb
- Just a week after 50 people were injured in the bombing of a shopping centre
At least 24 people were injured when a bomb exploded in a hospital in Bangkok just a week after a shopping centre was blown up.
The bomb went off in a reception room for retired civil servants at the Phramongkutklao Hospital about 11am on Monday.
Deputy police commissioner Srivara Ransibrahmanakul said pieces of the bomb including traces of a battery and electric wiring were found at the scene.
‘It’s confirmed to be a bomb. We must convene a meeting before saying anything further, but at this time, I can confirm it was a bomb,’ he told reporters.
The explosion was just a week after 50 people were wounded when two bombs were detonated in a shopping centre in Pattani, in Thailand’s south.
It was also the third anniversary of a military coup that brought the ruling military regime to power.
