Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington found dead in apparent suicide, LA coroner says
Linkin Park lead singer Chester Bennington, who sold millions of albums with an ever-changing mix of hard rock, hip-hop and rap, has been found dead in his home near Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County coroner said. He was 41.

- Linkin Park sold 10 million copies of their debut album Hybrid Theory, then another 4 million with Meteora
- Bennington struggled with drug and alcohol addiction at various times during his life
- He is survived by his second wife Talinda and his six children
Coroner spokesman Brian Elias said authorities were investigating Bennington’s death as an apparent suicide at Palos Verdes Estates, a small coastal city near Los Angeles, but no additional details were available.
Band co-founder and producer Mike Shinoda said on Twitter he was “shocked and heartbroken”.
“Chester Bennington was an artist of extraordinary talent and charisma, and a human being with a huge heart and a caring soul,” Warner Brothers chief executive officer and chairman Cameron Stang said in a statement.

Millionaire art provocateur and professional gambler David Walsh has officially unveiled his grand expansion vision for his Hobart art gallery MONA.
HOtel MOna features:
- Hotel rooms “elevated above the Derwent River” in inverted suspension bridge structure
- A “private, members-only, high-limits, poker machine-free (casino) for non-Tasmanians, designed as an ‘anti casino'”
- Three-level library holding “David Walsh’s large and expanding collection of rare books and manuscripts”
- Spa treatment centre “that’s hard to describe because we haven’t figured it out yet”
- Outdoor stage and amphitheatre with “children’s sculpture and an expansive playground”
- 1,075-seat indoor theatre for “a range of performances including music, circus, dance, plays, musicals, speech nights, school concerts, cinema, comedy, conferences, business launches and events”
- 1,000-capacity function and events centre for “AGM-style events, product exhibitions, conventions and performances”

Mr Walsh, the founder of the Museum Of Old And New Art (MONA), also flagged a move north for the annual Festival Of Music and Art (FOMA) event, which will in future be held in Launceston — if the Government agrees to help finance the shift.

Margaret Court: Protesters rally against former tennis champion outside Liberal Party fundraiser
Liberal Party fundraiser in central Melbourne to protest against tennis legend Margaret Court, who was invited to give a speech at the function.
She has come under fire for a series of comments recently surrounding homosexuality, including saying she would boycott Qantas for its support of same-sex marriage
Court, who is now a pastor at Victory Life Church in Perth, wrote an open letter to Qantas in The West Australian newspaper in May saying she believed in the traditional definition of marriage as stated in the Bible.
Court was invited to the fundraiser for a state Liberal Party candidate at Melbourne’s men-only Athenaeum Club, however as protesters rallied outside, it was not clear if she had arrived or not.
The rally was organised by Anthony Wallace of the Equal Love group.

Ricciardo third in Canadian Grand Prix. Patrick Stewart does the ‘shoey’ with Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo has made it three straight Formula One podium finishes, but his influence among Hollywood elites knows no bounds after recruiting Patrick Stewart as his latest ‘shoey’ acolyte.
Australia’s Red Bull racer Ricciardo placed third in a Mercedes-dominated Canadian Grand Prix, after Lewis Hamilton comfortably won the race ahead of team-mate Valtteri Bottas at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
While the Mercedes pair streeted the field it was a stellar drive from Ricciardo, who managed to make his way onto the podium after starting the race in sixth.
Stewart, of Star Trek and X-Men fame, was conducting the post-race interviews on the podium, and upon nearing the party-friendly proximity of the Australian driver, Ricciardo began motioning towards his celebratory bottle of bubbly.
“Oh my. I know what’s coming. This is becoming a ritual!” Stewart said, as Ricciardo began unbuckling his shoe.
Ricciardo poured the champagne into his boot, downing the lot in his signature shoey celebration.
“Bravo! Good vintage!”
As the crowd cheered, Ricciardo — who had previously suckered Gerard Butler into joining him in the ritual at last year’s US Grand Prix — asked Stewart if he would like to partake.
“I’d love some, yeah. Come on!” said Stewart. With one fateful, bellowing “Cheers!”, Stewart sank the champers in one go, without even flinching…

Assange won’t ‘forgive or forget’ as rape investigation dropped
Sweden’s top prosecutor says she is dropping an investigation into rape claims against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, bringing to an end a seven-year legal stand-off.

- Assange’s lawyer has described end of seven-year stand-off as “total victory”
The announcement means the WikiLeaks leader no longer faces sex crime allegations in Sweden, although British police say he is still wanted in Britain for jumping bail in 2012.
Assange, 45, took refuge in Ecuador’s embassy in London in 2012 to escape extradition to Sweden to answer questions about sex-crime allegations from two women.
The Swedish Prosecutor has now dropped that investigation because all avenues to pursue it have been exhausted.
Addressing supporters and the media on the embassy’s balcony after the announcement, Assange said he was ready to talk to Britain “about what is the best way forward” and with the US Department of Justice, but also defended his right to stay put.
“The road is far from over,” he said after raising a clenched fist in a gesture of victory.
“The war, the proper war, is just commencing.”
Chief Swedish prosecutor Marianne Ny said maintaining his European arrest warrant would have required Assange to attend court in Sweden, and extraditing him to the country seems impossible in the near future.
“This is a total victory for Julian Assange. He is now free to leave the embassy when he wants,” Per E Samuelsson, his lawyer in Sweden, told Swedish Radio.
“He is of course happy and relieved. He has been critical that it has lasted that long.”
Shortly after the announcement was made, Assange posted an old photo of himself smiling on Twitter and followed it up with a personal message.
“Detained for seven years without charge … while my children grew up and my name was slandered,” he wrote.
“I do not forgive or forget.”

Salt Creek backpacker attacker named as Roman Heinze
Heinze, 61, was found guilty of kidnapping, endangering life, causing harm with intent to cause harm and assault charges over an attack on two international backpackers on February 9 last year.
During the trial, the court heard a Brazilian backpacker was found naked and screaming for help on a beach in South Australia’s Coorong region and the other backpacker, a German woman, was found covered head to toe in blood.
The court heard the two women, both now aged 24, each thought they were going to die during the attack.
The two young women only met each other in the days prior through a mutual friend, and decided to travel together as they both wanted to see the sights along the Great Ocean Road to Melbourne.
Heinze met the women after responding to an advertisement the Brazilian woman put on the website Gumtree looking for a lift for the trip.
Not your victim
The German woman told her attacker, in a recorded statement played to the court, she would never be his victim because she was a survivor.
“I want you to know, Roman, that you could not defeat me, you could not break me,” she said.
“You could not win even when you tried so hard, first by hitting me on the head with the hammer then by driving over me with your car.
“You could not make me your victim because I am a survivor. This has only made me stronger than I have ever been. It showed me what I’m capable of.”
The woman said she came to Australia to travel, work, meet “awesome people” and experience unforgettable things.
“I did have unforgettable memories, but in a negative way,” she said.
She said she was no longer carefree and trusting of others.
“I’m always aware that it could happen again. I mistrust people, I am in fear someone wants to attack me again.”
She said she felt betrayed by Heinze.
“At the time of the incident, I experienced the most intense feelings I ever had — panic, adrenaline, fear for my life, fear that I had to die when I did not want to die yet,” she said.
The woman told the court she felt incredibly sad and unable to believe someone could prey on vulnerable people.
“I felt so lonesome because I couldn’t share the experience with anyone,” she said.
“But you could not take what Australia meant to me … I know this crime has nothing to do with the country but only with [you].”
Parents worried about solo travel plan
Before she left Germany for Australia, the woman said her parents had expressed fears about her plan to travel alone.
“Their worst nightmare became true with this,” she said.
“My mum was suffering a lot from this incident and could neither eat nor sleep anymore for months.
“It was the same for me — it is still hard to realise this happened.”
The young woman said she was haunted by nightmares and paranoia.
“I was going through the horror so many times,” she said.
“I was suffering from PTSD and felt limited in my life as I was reminded of it when I saw hammers and when I heard young women screaming.”
Heinze emotionless in dock
Heinze showed no emotion as the court heard victim impact statements.
The Brazilian backpacker also told the court of her ongoing trauma since the attack.
“After the sexual assault I was waking up in the middle of the night, scared, imagining that someone was breaking in. If my partner wasn’t home I wouldn’t leave my room,” she said.
“If I heard an unexplained noise I would break down crying.
“Every day, I see where the ropes cut into me. I feel fear even when I smell cigarette smoke — Roman smoked.”
During the trial, the court was told Heinze tied the Brazilian woman’s hands behind her back, cut off her bikini with a knife, punched her in the head and sexually assaulted her on the beach.
It heard he then attacked the German woman with a hammer when she went to her friend’s aid and rammed her several times with his four-wheel drive.
In another case, Heinze pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting another woman less than two years earlier.
And in a further case, he was found not guilty of rape and false imprisonment charges against a former girlfriend.
The current proceedings were told about Heinze indecently assaulting a young woman he met via Gumtree less than two years before the Salt Creek attack.
That woman, in her victim impact statement, said she had not thought Heinze would hurt her because he was the same age as her own father…

Paris’ Gare du Nord station evacuated
Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert has told The Associated Press that the early Tuesday operation was aimed at “removing doubt” but would not say what prompted it or whether there had been any injuries or arrests.
The busy station is the terminus of a large suburban and national rail network as well as Eurostar trains from London.
A Eurostar spokeswoman said the incident did not appear to have any relation to its trains and did not appear to affect its passengers. The operation began after the last Eurostar arrivals and departures late Monday.
Dozens of police officers and transport staff surrounded the large station in northeast Paris and sealed off all roads leading in as local residents milled around.
Dave James Phillips, a 39-year-old technology consultant from Britain, said he was getting off the last train in from London when he saw officers flooding the station.
“There were police immediately, and a chap with his hand on his gun,” Phillips told AP.
“As we were walking down the platform, one came down and said, ‘Rapide, rapide. Out, out.”‘
Phillips said police kept pouring into the station as passengers were hustled out and police buses and unmarked cars were “driving quite dramatically up the road.”
Phillips said he had since left the area.
“Hopefully nothing happened,” he said.
France is under a state of emergency imposed after a series of Islamic extremist attacks. The operation came the day after a tense and closely watched presidential election that was won by independent Emmanuel Macron. He has said one of his top priorities will be ensuring France’s security.

Man shot dead not intended target: police
A man who was shot dead at a house in Sydney’s west earlier this year has been identified as a Chinese national who police believe was innocently caught in the crossfire between two groups of men.
Qin Wu, 37, died on February 1 at the single-storey Guildford house on Kennedy Street.
The house, which is covered in colourful graffiti, was also being used as a temple and reportedly a meeting place for drug dealers.
Wu was not the intended target, Detective Sergeant Justin Moynihan said in a statement on Thursday.
“It is possible Qin may have been shot when he intervened in an argument between his friend and a group of men who arrived during their visit at the house,” he said.
“At the time of the incident, the house was also being used as a temple, so there were numerous visitors every day and we would like to speak to anyone who visited in the days leading up to his death.”

Perth father Edward John Herbert found guilty of attempting to kill daughters
Herbert’s three-year-old daughter suffered burns to her upper body and face in the attack, which the court heard caused severe and life-threatening injuries and left her with permanent scarring.
The second child, aged seven, was doused in petrol before being rescued by an off-duty police officer who had rushed to help from the house across the street.
During the trial, the court was told Herbert had been drinking and smoking cannabis on the day of the offences.

WA Government ramps up pressure on Perth Mayor Lisa Scaffidi to resign
The WA Government has stepped up pressure on Perth’s Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi to resign.

“We have lost confidence in the Lord Mayor of Perth — we believe that the interests of the ratepayers, the residents and the businesses that are the city of Perth deserve to be respected,” he said.
“We believe it is in the best interests of those people particularly that the Lord Mayor no longer continue in the position that she holds.”
