Archibald Prize: Jeweller swaps tools to paint WA MP Josie Farrer for prestigious competition

A paintbrush is not the usual tool of choice for Perth jeweller Chris Bailey, whose portrait of Kimberley MP Josie Farrer is being entered in the prestigious Archibald Prize.

The Mount Lawley jeweller decided just a month ago to enter the art prize, and has been slaving away for up to 16 hours a day since then to meet the deadline, living off a diet of cereal and takeaway.

He only met with Ms Farrer once to complete the portrait, mainly due to her busy schedule.

The Indigenous MP will join an esteemed list of figures who have been painted for the Archibald Prize, including Barry Humphries and George Calombaris.

“I was a little bit blown away when I was asked about it … [I] never ever thought I’d have one done,” she said.

Ms Farrer first saw the finished product on Wednesday and was extremely pleased with the result.

“Chris has done a beautiful job getting it all together considering I wasn’t there most of the time. I think he’s done a fantastic job,” she said.

In 2016, Bailey travelled to Bogotá in Columbia to seek a ‘master’ painter, who he had met and corresponded with on Facebook, to cultivate his painting skills.

After a year under the guidance of his mentor, he returned to his Mount Lawley studio.

“When I first sat down with him he said, ‘what are your goals?’, and I said I wanted to enter the Archibald and … he said ‘yep, no problems, we’ll get you prepared for that’.”

What makes the feat even more remarkable is that it was Bailey’s first attempt at a portrait.

“I’m very happy with it and I think I’ve captured everything I wanted to catch about Josie,” he said.

“I wanted her strength, I wanted her warmth, I wanted all of her qualities and I’m pretty happy.”

Olympic gold medal Inge de Bruijn swims naked on Adam seeks Eve

She was once known for her eye-catching displays in the pool, but now former Olympic champion Inge de Bruijn is getting attention for an entirely different reason.

The 43-year-old former swimmer will appear completely naked as she attempts to find love on on Dutch reality TV show Adam seeks Eve.

Ms De Bruijn, who won four golds and set three world records during her career, is the star name taking part in a VIP spin-off of the show, which has been running for six seasons.

To make the programme she spent time with several non-famous men on a tropical island to see if there was a connection between the pair.

Ahead of the show, Ms De Bruijn told Dutch media about her ideal partner. She said: ‘He must be sweet, charming, caring, funny and a bit mysterious.’

Ms De Bruijn became the oldest person to receive an individual Olympic swimming gold medal when she won the 50m free in 2006

The episode featuring Ms De Bruijn will be broadcast on Dutch channel RTL5 on Thursday this week.

Ms De Bruijn said she hopes the show will lead to presenting opportunities on lifestyle and travel programmes, adding that she has loved travelling from a young age and once wanted to be an air stewardess.

The athlete is not shy about putting her body on display, having modelled for lingerie line Sapph since her 2007 retirement.

Ms De Bruijn made her swimming debut in 1991 at the World Aquatics Championships where she won bronze as part of the relay team, taking gold with the same team at the European LC Championships later that year.

At her Olympic debut, in 1992, she finished 8th in both the 100m freestyle and the 4x100m relay, choosing not to compete at the following tournament.

It is clear that Ms De Bruijn has no qualms about showing off her body, having also worked as a lingerie model for Dutch brand Sapph following her 2007 retirement from swimming
Ms De Bruijn told Dutch media that she hopes the appearance will lead to more television work, saying she would like to present a lifestyle or travel programme

#F1 season gets underway for 2017 with testing in Barcelona

The day F1 fans have been waiting for months to enjoy has arrived, as testing for the 2017 season got underway at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.

  • New Mercedes man Valtteri Bottas impressed as did Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel
  • Red Bull and McLaren had nightmare mornings as both cars broke down

All 10 teams competing this season were in action, which will give the first indication as to who will be the leaders and also-rans in the coming months.

Mercedes have dominated recent years, and look set to do so again as Valtteri Bottas – brought in to replace retired world champion Nico Rosberg – initially went fastest on the first morning.
