Coronation Street bosses set to kill off soap legend Rita Tanner after 53 years on ITV show

CORRIE bosses are to shock millions of fans by killing off show legend Rita Tanner. Rita, played by Barbara Knox, made her Street debut in 1964. But

The Sun on Sunday can reveal she will be diagnosed with a brain tumour.

And she will reject emergency surgery to remove the growth, fearing she might wake up to a life that she no longer remembers.

Soap sources said it would end in tragedy for Rita, who has recently been experiencing strange symptoms, such as bouts of forgetfulness.

One said: “It has been suggested she might have dementia, but she does not.

“In fact, she will be diagnosed with a tumour and her doctors will say there is a serious risk she will die if they don’t remove it.

“But Rita is terrified that she could not know who she is, or recognise her friends.

“All the indications are that this will end tragically.”

Rita’s diagnosis is expected to be revealed in October.

Actress Barbara, 83, made a one-off appearance as Rita in 1964 before being made a regular character in 1972.

She has run her shop the Kabin since the 1970s.

‘He was just holding scissors’: Brother of man shot in Sydney criticises police

The brother of a man shot dead by police at Sydney’s Central Station has hit out at the officers involved, saying they did not need to fire at his sibling.

Danukul Mokmool threatened florist Manuel Theoharas with a broken bottle before grabbing a pair of scissors and threatening police about 6:45pm on Wednesday.

Officers from the Transport Command fired four shots, killing Mr Mokmool.

His brother Charlie Huynh said his 30-year-old half-brother, known as Dan, was a kind person who had battled mental health problems for the past 10 years.

Speaking at the family home in Heckenberg, in Sydney’s south-west, Mr Huynh said his brother was critical of police.

“They could have done something better than just shooting him,” he said.

“Come on, like, he was just holding scissors.

ONE person has been “critically burnt” in a gas bottle explosion in Perth’s inner suburbs.

Emergency crews have raced out to the Mary Street scene in Highgate after neighbours reported hearing an explosion.

One person has been “critically burnt” in the fire.

A 9kg gas bottle has been located at the scene with police, paramedics also on the site.

Prince Harry to continue tour of Sydney

Prince Harry will wrap up his visit to Sydney with a visit to some of the venues of the 2018 Invictus Games.

After spending much of Wednesday getting wet in thunderstorms as he kicked off the 500-day countdown to next year’s games in the harbour city, Harry will pay a visit to Sydney’s Olympic Park on Thursday.

He’s in town for just two days to promote the games he founded four years ago for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women.

The 32-year-old former British army captain met many of the Australian veterans hoping to secure a place in the team for this year’s games in Toronto during official functions on Wednesday.

He’s urged the Aussie vets to ‘put every single hour’ into training before the games come to Sydney in October next year…

US researchers discover new way to procure water from thin air

Imagine a future in which every household has an appliance that pulls water out of the air, even in dry or desert climates, using only the power of the sun.

That could be the result of a prototype developed by researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the University of California, Berkeley, that sucks water out of the air and stores it using nothing but sunlight and MOFs.

MOFs are metal-organic frameworks that are made from metal ions and organic compounds that form a sponge-like configuration.

What are MOFs?

• Metal-organic frameworks are crystalline compounds composed of metal ions
• MOFs have a high porosity and are thermally and mechanically stable.
• The high specific surface area exhibits selective adsorption
• MOFs are formed by reticular synthesis and there are several hundred different types
• Careful selection of MOF constituents can yield crystals of ultrahigh porosity and high thermal and chemical stability
• The interior of MOFs can be chemically altered to separate and store gas

Researchers tuned the chemical composition of a MOF to be hydrophilic, which in a powder form can not only suck up liquid water but also absorb water vapour. Their findings are reported in the journal Science.
