Weekend storms have caused severe beach erosion at Fremantle’s Port Beach, with the ocean taking large chunks out of a car park, collapsing walkways and sand dunes and exposing potentially hazardous metal and wooden poles at the water line.
Industrial debris and rocks — dumped there from port-related infrastructure over the decades — lies in the shallows along the reclaimed coastal stretch.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the council, which is responsible for the land to the high water mark, was working with the Port Authority and several government departments to solve the problem.
“This is the worst … certainly in my living memory,” Dr Pettitt said.
“And it’s a real problem in the sense that we’re starting to get key infrastructure eaten away into.”
The council has closed Port and Sandtracks beaches in the short-term to keep people safe from the uncovered debris.

After floods caused chaos in the Main Street of historic Ellicott City, Maryland, local officials said they were heartbroken to see the community so severely damaged again less than two years after a devastating flood killed two people and caused millions in damages.As the flood waters receded late on Sunday (local time), officials were just beginning the grim task of assessing the destruction.
During an evening news conference, Howard County executive Allan Kittleman said authorities were not aware of any fatalities or missing people.
But first responders and rescue officials were still going through the muddied, damaged downtown, conducting safety checks and ensuring people evacuated.
Mr Kittleman said the damage was significant and appeared to him to be worse than the flooding two summers ago.
He said residents and business owners “are faced with the same daunting task again”.
“We will be there for them as we were in 2016,” he said.
Hundreds of sheep killed and farming land destroyed in Stirling Ranges blaze caused by escaped national park burn
Farmers on Western Australia’s south coast are still coming to terms with the extent of losses after devastating bushfires tore through the region last week.
An escaped burn in the Stirling Range National Park resulted in 17,200 hectares being burnt, with about one fifth occurring on private property.

Mixed farmer Mal Thomson grows crops and runs sheep next to the Stirling Ranges.
He lost nearly 400 pregnant sheep and their lambs when a bushfire ripped through his property early Friday morning, fanned by intense wind.
“There was a mob of ewes in the first paddock we were at … there were about 460 twin-bearing ewes,” he said.
“They had started lambing … three days prior to the fire. They just had nowhere to go.”

Moss Side raid: Explosion heard in Manchester as police swoop on home
ARMED police have swooped on a property in Moss Side and arrested a fourteenth suspect in connection with the Manchester bomb attack as the city remains on red alert.
Pictures show a huge police presence on Quantock Street, which has been sealed off.
The raid follows the arrest of a 25-year-old man in the Old Trafford area under the terrorism act – taking the total to 14.
Great Manchester Police confirmed anti-terror cops executed a warrant to enter the property and a search is currently on-going.
Residents say they heard a loud bang and it appears the door to a property has been blown off, according to the Manchester Evening News.
A man has been heard screaming and the dogs are “going wild”, the MEN reports.
A statement GMP said: “Today, Sunday 28 May 2017, officers investigating the attack at the Manchester Arena have executed a warrant at an address in Moss Side.
A search is currently on-going.”

Eight People Killed in Mississippi Shooting
BROOKHAVEN, Mississippi—Authorities in Mississippi said a suspect is in custody after eight people were killed in a shooting, including a sheriff’s deputy.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation spokesman Warren Strain said the shootings occurred at three separate homes Saturday night in rural Lincoln County.
Mr. Strain said charges haven’t yet been filed against the suspect and it would be “premature” to discuss a motive.
It wasn’t clear whether the suspect knew the victims.

#F1 Vettel extends championship lead over Hamilton with Monaco win
MONTE-CARLO, Monaco — Sebastian Vettel took Ferrari’s first win on the streets of Monte-Carlo since 2001 with a comfortable drive to victory at the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of teammate Kimi Raikkonen.
The win extends his lead in the championship to 25 points over Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who started 13th on the grid and recovered to seventh in an afternoon of damage limitation. Vettel was shuffled ahead of Raikkonen during the pit stops, after Ferrari dropped the Finn into traffic following his one and only tyre change while Vettel was allowed to make up time in clear air.
Daniel Ricciardo benefitted from a similar strategy to take third from Valtteri Bottas, who also pitted early in reaction to Ricciardo’s Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen kicking off the pit stop window on lap 32. Bottas just held off Verstappen at the end of the race after Red Bull took advantage of a late Safety Car to put the Dutch teenager on fresh set of ultra-soft tyres for the final ten laps.
That Safety Car was caused by an accident on lap 61 of 78 when returning McLaren driver Jenson Button lunged up the inside of Pascal Wehrlein at Portier. For the move to work it needed Wehrlein’s full cooperation, but it’s unlikely the Sauber driver was even aware of Button’s intentions until the two collided.
Wehrlein’s car was launched on its side and into the barriers, where it remained until the marshals were able to put it back on all four wheels. The German walked away from the accident before heading to the medical centre for precautionary checks, while Button continued as far as the Nouvelle Chicane before retiring with broken suspension.
With Raikkonen as his rear gunner, Vettel had no problem retaining the lead when racing resumed and crossed the line 3.1s ahead of his teammate to take Ferrari’s first one-two victory since 2010.

35,000 Defiant runners take to Manchester’s streets after bombing for 10km course
This year’s Great Manchester Run had it all, sun, celebrities, fancy dress and of course, a splattering of rain.
Around 35,000 runners took to the streets of the city centre on Sunday to take part in the 10km route.
There were amazing fancy dress costumes, and so many heart-felt emotional messages on the backs of runners’ vests stating why they were taking part.
World boxing champion Anthony Crolla led home his ‘Crolla’s Army’ – a specially selected group of runners who all benefited from training and guidance provided by Crolla.
There were also a host of celebrities on the route, including former New Order star Peter Hook, Sunderland and England defender Michael Gray, and Coronation Street stars Jack P Shepherd and Tina O’Brien.
BA massive bill [$300million?] over global IT meltdown with delays set to continue
British Airways could be facing a massive bill in compensation costs after thousands of its passengers were stranded by a global IT system meltdown. Some forecasts it could be $300 million.
The airline was forced to ground all flights from Heathrow and Gatwick on Saturday due to the system crash, causing chaos at both airports.
Under EU law, delayed passengers are eligible to claim compensation, unless the delay is caused by factors outside the airline’s control.

Heavy battles continues to rage in Tripoli as rival factions duel for control of the Libyan capital. The assault on the UN-backed government is led by a Misrata commander whose success in the anti-Gadaffi rebellion was secured by the 2011 NATO intervention.
Clashes persisted in Tripoli Saturday between militias loyal the self-proclaimed National Salvation Government (GNC) and forces loyal to the internationally-recognized Presidential Council (PC) which presides over the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA).
Fierce fighting erupted on Friday after the GNC’s militia’s top commander, Salah Badi, launched an attack on the GNA-allied Central Security militia in an attempt to recapture parts of the capital, the Tripoli Herald reported.

Damascus urges UN to halt US coalition strikes, which ‘spread chaos & benefit terrorists’
Syria has demanded an immediate halt to US-led airstrikes after another 35 civilians were killed by a coalition airstrike this week. In a letter to the UN, Damascus says these strikes create chaos and help terrorist launch attacks against government troops.
“Syria condemns the attacks of the alliance which target civilians and cause massive material damage to the infrastructure, facilities, and properties in Syria,” the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry said in a letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of Security Council.
At least 35 civilians, including women and children, were killed on Thursday night when US-led coalition warplanes targeted the city of Al Mayadeen in the southeastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor province.

Orangutan escapes from Perth Zoo
PART of Perth Zoo was evacuated today after an Orangutan and her baby escaped from their enclosure.
PerthNow reader Jess McConnell said people were evacuated from the nocturnal house while keepers attempted to get the animal back into the enclosure.
“Keepers are quite panicked asking people to keep calm then to move quicker as it’s an emergency situation,” she said.

Nine announces new ‘Underbelly’ series
Channel Nine has announced that there will be another series of Underbelly.
The latest installment of the Australian crime drama, which is scheduled to air later this year, will tell the true story of vice queen Kate Leigh and brothel owner Tilly Devine, who lived in Sydney in the 1920s.
According to Adelaide Now, Rake actress Danielle Cormack will be playing Leigh in Underbelly: Razor, while former All Saints star Jack Campbell has accepted the role of Devine’s husband Jim.
The first three series of Underbelly were popular with viewers, but Nine apparently saw a large ratings drop for its three recent telemovie versions of the show.
Despite rumours that Oscar-nominated actress Jacki Weaver would be taking part in the fourth series of the show, executive producer Des Monaghan recently insisted that they “can’t afford her”.

Schapelle Corby’s “auntie Jen” armed with a $600 bottle of Belvedere vodka
THERE were bizarre scenes at the home of Schapelle Corby’s mother today as the family appeared to be toying with waiting media.
But it was clearly a day of celebration at the house south of Brisbane, as friends and relatives dropped round — including her “auntie Jen” armed with a $600 bottle of Belvedere vodka.
“Yay. So happy, she’s finally home in Australia,” Jen told media as she arrived with two others.
