Public asked to help name new Qantas Dreamliner – MacPlaneFace?

Qantas passengers could soon be flying overseas on a plane called Vegemite.

The airline’s new fleet of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner planes are set to be named after Australian icons, with the popular yeast extract emerging as the early favourite.

Qantas passengers could soon be flying on an aircraft called Vegemite, if members of the public have their way (stock image) The public has been handed the task of naming the airline’s eight Dreamliner aircraft and other names already proving popular include lamington and Bondi Beach.

Hills Hoist, Don Bradman, the Great Barrier Reef and badagarang, a word for kangaroo in the Dharug language of the Eora nation, are also in contention.

‘They can be people, places or things, so long as they reflect the true Spirit of Australia,’ Qantas boss Alan Joyce said.

The Qantas Dreamliner aircraft will begin flying in October, first domestically and then between Melbourne and Los Angeles from December.

The aircraft will also be used on the historic Perth to London non-stop route from March next year, which will take about 17 hours.

The public has until May 26 to submit their eight preferred names online, one for every Qantas Dreamliner.

Reflecting the importance of the Dreamliner to the national carrier, we’re naming these eight aircraft after Australian icons,’ Mr Joyce said.

‘Whether it’s a notable person, a ground breaking invention, a saying, or a landmark – we want eight icons that, together, reflect the depth and breadth of this place we all call home.’

The names will then be whittled down to 24 finalists, with the public then asked to choose their favourite to reveal the final eight.
