Aboriginal man’s year-long walk for justice ends at Parliament House in Canberra

Clinton Pryor left Perth on foot one year ago with only seven songs to listen to on repeat. He left home clean-shaven, but today his beard reaches his chest — and he has downloaded a few more songs.

And his message for the Prime Minister, which was once his own, now comes from all the Aboriginal communities he has passed through. The 27-year-old has walked almost 6,000 kilometres in his journey to Parliament House in Canberra.

He is a softly spoken man, but in his eyes are now all the steps he has taken across this burnt country.

Tanja Ebert young mother murdered: man kills himself as SA Police investigate

THE husband of a missing young woman killed himself at the family’s farm on Wednesday afternoon — just hours after police revealed they were convinced she had been murdered.

Tanja Ebert’s husband, Michael Burdon, had told police the 23-year-old mother of two refused to go home to their remote sheep station in SA’s northeast pastoral region following a trip to Adelaide and left the family car carrying a large sum of money.

She has been missing for more than a week.

At 2.30pm on Wednesday, police held a media conference to say they were treating Ms Ebert’s disappearance as a murder inquiry.

At 5pm on Wednesday, police said a 41-year-old man had died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the family’s property at Oulnina Station — near Mannahill in SA’s northeast pastoral district — some time after the media conference.

Police officers were present at the property at the time but no one else was injured.

Police confirmed to The Advertiser that the couple’s two children — aged 1 and 3 — are safe and in the care of family members.

Car industry revolution fuels Western Australia’s lithium boom

Electric cars are driving rapid mining investment in WA, with the state supplying most of the lithium needed to manufacture batteries worldwide.

Car makers’ EV targets

By 2019:
Volvo to phase out internal combustion cars
By 2020:
Volvo plans to develop an affordable EV
Tesla pledges to build 1 million EVs
Nissan predicts EVs will account for 20pc of sales in Europe
Ford forecasts up to 20pc of Chinese market will be EVs
By 2025:
Volkswagon to target 1 million EV sales
Mercedes predicts up to 25pc of its global sales will be EVs

Most electric vehicles (EVs) use lithium-ion batteries, the same technology which powers smartphones, tablets and laptops.

As car makers around the globe race to meet new EV targets, demand for batteries has driven lithium exports from WA as the state now produces more than half of the world’s supply.

Global leaders have been behind the push, with new European emissions legislation forcing car markers to increase their targets and France recently announcing it wanted to end the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

It joins similar targets set by India (2030) and Norway (2025).

The British Government is also set to ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars from 2040 as part of a plan to clean up air pollution.

NSW earthquake: Gold mine evacuated, residents in Orange woken up by shaking

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake caused a gold mine to be evacuated overnight in central western New South Wales.

A precautionary evacuation was carried out at the Cadia East Gold mine after the earthquake struck about 20 kilometres south-west of Orange at 2:30am.

Staff remained in refuge chambers or safe areas before moving to the surface about 9:30am.

Mine accesses were inspected by geotechnical engineers to ensure they were safe before staff were transferred.

There were no injuries and all staff were accounted for, police said. Production at the mine has been suspended.

Orange resident Andrew Vogler said it was a surreal experience.

“It felt as if someone was shaking the front door to get in and the windows and the whole house started to rattle,” he said.
