US Mayor Invites Trans People Banned From Military To Join Police Department

Austin’s Steve Adler said trans troops are welcome on his city’s law enforcement.

Many LGBTQ people were stunned and angered Wednesday after President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he was banning transgender service members from the U.S. military.

Just how Trump plans to enforce this ban, which may not even be legal, remains unclear. Still, the mayor of Austin, Texas is urging trans troops on active duty to apply for new jobs on his city’s police force if they find themselves discharged.

Mayor Steve Adler, who is a Democrat, extended the offer in a series of tweets Wednesday afternoon.

Japan’s defense minister and rising political star resigns

Japan’s Defense Minister has resigned following allegations she helped to suppress the release of sensitive defense documents, in the latest blow to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet as his popularity continues to dive.

Tomomi Inada, a rising political star, assumed the role of defense minister in August 2016 and was seen by many as Abe’s successor-in-waiting.

In a press conference in Tokyo, Inada said she submitted her resignation letter to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday morning, who accepted it.

Japan has never had a female prime minister, and Inada is only the second woman to serve as defense minister. The first, Yuriko Koike, was elected as the governor of Tokyo last year. She is also the first woman to hold that position.

Inada’s resignation comes amid claims that she helped obscure internal records that detailed the danger Japanese peacekeepers faced in the war-torn nation of South Sudan.

The Japanese Defense Ministry said that logs of troop activity during a particularly violent time — records which could have affected the debate on whether to continue the deployment of Japanese troops in the region — were thrown away, but it was later revealed they were in fact preserved.

Kellyanne Conway: Those Who Lose Medicaid Can Get a Job

“If they are able-bodied and they want to work, then they’ll have employer-sponsored benefits like you and I do,” she said

Kellyanne Conway says those who lose their Medicaid coverage under the proposed Republican health care plan can find a job that provides health insurance instead.

In an interview on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, Conway, counselor to President Trump, said that Obamacare expanded Medicaid to those who did not truly need it, because they were able to work. She was defending the Senate’s proposed health care bill, which would make big cuts to Medicaid, by lowering the income limit for those who qualify, among other measures.

“Obamacare took Medicaid, which was designed to help the poor, the needy, the sick, disabled, also children and pregnant women, it took it and went way above the poverty line and opened it up to many able-bodied Americans,” she said. Those “should probably find other — at least see if there are other options for them.”

Vinod Khanna dead: Bollywood actor and Indian politician dies of cancer, aged 70

Bollywood star Vinod Khanna has died from cancer aged 70. The Indian actor and producer appeared in more than 100 Bollywood films and was one of its best-loved actors.  Dubbed “Bollywood’s original heartthrob”, Khanna began his career in 1968 and quickly became a household name in India, starring in a number of hits during the 70s and 80s.

Some of his most memorable performances include the films Mera Gaon, Mera Desh [My Village, My Country], Kuchhe Dhaage [Fragile Threads], and Qurbani, [Sacrifice], for which he received a Filmfare Award nomination (India’s version of an Oscar).

He was also an active politician who was elected to parliament four times, serving once as a junior foreign minister.

He died of bladder cancer on 28 April, according to a hospital statement…

Donald Trump to be a character in American Horror Story season 7

Ryan Murphy has confirmed that the upcoming election-inspired season of American Horror Story will feature the characters of former election rivals Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Speaking to E! Online, the showrunner revealed the news flippantly, stating: “[We haven’t cast Clinton or Trump] yet. We’re halfway through the writing and not yet.“

He did share a minor tease of what to expect, however.

“It starts on election night is all I’ll say… It’s very scary that night for many people. It’s fun, you will like it. It’s really a season that will have a lot of people interested and I think there’s something for everybody in that season.”

Murphy, who is currently promoting new series Feud, stated that the recent US election is a “jumping off point” to something grander.

American Horror Story will return this autumn with stalwart Evan Peters the only other confirmed returning cast member.

The bad news is that ITV say it will be the third and final series, so we won’t be seeing that much more of detectives DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller (David Tennant and Olivia Colman). So you’d best make the most of this run, I suppose. OK, it’s a little formulaic in the modern detective drama idiom, all blue rubber gloves and evidence bags, but the fashionable obsession with showing the viewer the forensic stuff in, well, forensic detail doesn’t intrude too much.

Prime Suspect 1973 is also formulaic in its own way, indulging us once again in the British passion for intricately constructed retro-feel drama…
