China invites foreign experts to help treat ailing dissident Liu

China invited medical experts from the United States and Germany to help treat dissident Nobel laureate Liu Xiaobo for cancer, a local government announced on Wednesday, in a softening of its stance ahead of this week’s G20 summit in Germany.

Liu, 61, was jailed for 11 years in 2009 for “inciting subversion of state power” after he helped write a petition known as “Charter 08” calling for sweeping political reforms.

He was recently moved from jail to a hospital to be treated for late-stage liver cancer.

The hospital, in the northeastern city of Shenyang, made the decision at the request of the family and in consultation with the doctors already treating him, the Shenyang Bureau of Justice said in a short statement on its website.

It provided no other details. Officials who picked up the telephone at the hospital said they were unaware of the case.

Phoenix as temps hit 119f – 48.3c. Make Trump live there, without air/con!

PHOENIX (AP) — The first day of summer brought some of the worst heat the Southwest U.S. has seen in years, forcing flights to be canceled, straining the power grid and making life miserable for workers toiling in temperatures that reached 120 degrees or higher in some desert cities.

Arizona, Nevada and California saw dramatic temperatures Tuesday as researchers say deadly heat waves like this one were going to grow more frequent.

Meteorologists in Phoenix said Tuesday evening the temperature topped out at 119 degrees_one that has only been matched or surpassed four other times.

The forecast called for a high of 120 degrees (49 degrees Celsius) in Phoenix, which it hasn’t seen in more than two decades. Death Valley, California, reached 125 and Palm Springs hit 121, still a degree lower than the same day last year.

The operator of California’s power grid called on people to conserve electricity during peak hours.

Workers at a construction site in a Phoenix suburb huddled under an excavator to find a sliver of a shade during a break. At another building site, men in hard hats and yellow vests labored and sweated in the heat, downing water to stay hydrated. Project superintendent Tommy Russell says his company has held weekly safety meetings to prepare for the heat, and he will send his workers home if it hits 120.

Las Vegas also baked. Visitors tried to stay inside air-conditioned casinos, and some tourists lugged packs of bottled water around the Strip. Others went to a bar w

UPDATE: Fire engulfs London apartment block – NEW VIDEO

Two hundred firefighters and 40 fire engines are battling a large fire on a west London estate.

At least two people have been injured and flats at the 27-storey Grenfell Tower evacuated.

Footage on social media showed the building engulfed in fire, with flames stretching over a number of floors.

The tower block is on the Lancaster West Estate, near Notting Hall.

‘At this stage we are aware of two people being treated at the scene for smoke inhalation,’ local police said.

George Clarke, who presents Channel 4 show Amazing Spaces, told Radio 5 Live: ‘I’m 100 metres away and I’m absolutely covered in ash.

‘It’s so heartbreaking, I’ve seen someone flashing their torches at the top level and they obviously can’t get out.

‘The guys are doing an incredible job to try and get people out that building, but it’s truly

Trump insider pursuing bid for FBI building contract, raising questions of conflict of interest

In what ethics experts are calling a glaring direct conflict of interest, a significant business partner of both President Donald Trump and his son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner is pursuing a $2 billion government contract to build new headquarters for the FBI.

“It creates a huge conflict,” said Rep. Gerald Connolly, a Virginia Democrat who sits on the House Oversight Committee. “It’s an enormous project. The exposure here for the Trump administration is very real.”

Vornado Realty Trust, a giant New York real estate firm whose founder and chairman, Steven Roth, is a longtime friend of and occasional adviser to Trump, is one of three finalists for the rights to develop a new FBI headquarters and campus in the Washington, D.C., region. Roth is helping head up Trump’s infrastructure advisory council and traveled with the president as he rolled out his plans last week, briefly sharing the stage with him in Cincinnati — with Trump introducing him to the crowd as one of “the greatest builders in America.”

ANOTHER jewellery store RAID. Five men smash their way into Melbourne shop

Five men smashed their way into a Melbourne with crowbars and stole as much as they could carry while the terrified owner cowered in a back room.

The masked thugs shattered the locked glass door of Jafari Jewellery in on Bourke Road in Malvern East just before noon on Thursday.

They broke open cabinets to steal the valuable pieces before fleeing in a silver BMW.

‘They just smashed the glass and came inside smashing everything with steel bars,’ he said on a call to 3AW radio.

Mr Jafari said he’d owned the store for three years and was never robbed before. He said police would use CCTV and the car’s licence plate to track them down.

Owner Mohammed Jafari said he ran to the back of the store when the muscled robbers stormed in and while shaken he was not injured

It is the latest in a string of similar violent smash-and-grab Melbourne jewellery store robberies, and the second in two days.

On Tuesday a shop in Mulgrave was raided by masked robbers wielding axes and hammers who broke a front window to get inside.

A staff member bravely confronted the four men and was threatened with an axe during the brazen daylight robbery in a bust shopping centre.
