CHOKING. Stifling. Inescapable Heat, humidity set to become major killers

CHOKING. Stifling. Inescapable. If you think humidity’s abhorrent, it’s going to get much worse. And researchers are warning it will become a major killer within 50 years.

A research paper released today warns extreme hot and humid weather events will begin to exceed the upper limits of human survivability by the late 21st century.

This will be a particular problem for Australia’s nearest neighbours in densely-populated South East Asia. But an Australian academic says it also has dire implications closer to home.

THE HEAT IS ON

“There are many studies now coming out from South East Asia and India where they’re starting to realise heat is becoming a serious concern,” says Associate Professor Lidia Mayner, who is researching the health implications of extreme weather events at Flinders University’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences. “Similar conditions are reflected in parts of Australia, such as Darwin, Cairns and Broome”.

Put simply, the weather events combining extreme heat and humidity in these tropical zones are set to surpass the human body’s ability to cool itself…

Video appears to show Baltimore police planting drugs; CLIP

A body camera video appears to show a Baltimore police officer planting drugs in order to arrest a man for illegal possession, the Maryland Office of the Public Defender said on Wednesday.

The minute-long video released by the public defender’s office shows the officer placing a small plastic bag in a trash-strewn yard as two colleagues look on. All three officers then walk out to the sidewalk.

The officer then returns to the yard and retrieves the bag filled with capsules. The capsules were filled with heroin powder, according to the arrest report.

One officer seen in the video has been suspended, while the two other officers have been placed on administrative duty, the Baltimore Police Department said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The department showed other videos on Wednesday, recorded the same day as the footage released by the public defender, that it said raised the possibility the officer genuinely discovered the drugs at the scene but inappropriately chose to stage and film a recreation of the discovery.

The public defender’s office identified the officer handling the drugs in the video as Richard Pinheiro, and complained that he was a witness in dozens of other active cases. Pinheiro could not be reached for comment and the police department declined to say whether he had a lawyer.

The video resulted in a prosecutor dropping the criminal case against the man arrested for drug possession, the public defender’s office said.

No Justice for Women in Lawless Afghan She was buried waist deep, stoned to death. No one has been arrested.

 

There are three versions of how Tabaruk, a mother of six, died this spring during a journey through treacherous snow-covered mountains in Afghanistan.

She and her family had been expelled from their village in Ghor Province because her teenage daughter, Mah Yamsar, was said to have brought dishonor by becoming pregnant out of wedlock.

The police in Ghor say Tabaruk fell off her horse and died.

Members of the provincial council and human rights activists say she was pushed off a cliff, and then tied to a horse and dragged around until dead.

A third version of the story was told to Mah Yamsar by her 8-year-old brother, who was traveling with Tabaruk at the time. “They killed my mother with the bullets of a gun,” the brother recounted.

If Afghanistan is one of the worst places to be a woman, then Ghor, a province so lawless that people often wonder if there is a government there at all, may be the country’s capital of gender-based violence and abuse. Week after week there are reports of women abused or killed in Ghor by men who never face justice…

Jared Kushner’s firm was given $285 million Deutsche Bank loan a month before Election Day

Trump’s senior adviser says he will recuse himself from matters involving the lender, which has paid billions to settle U.S. and New York state charges.

One month before Election Day, Jared Kushner’s real estate company finalized a $285 million loan as part of a refinancing package for its property near Times Square in Manhattan.

The loan came at a critical moment. Kushner was playing a key role in the presidential campaign of his father-in-law, Donald Trump. The lender, Deutsche Bank, was negotiating to settle a federal mortgage fraud case and charges from New York state regulators that it aided a possible Russian money-laundering scheme. The cases were settled in December and January.

Now, Kushner’s association with Deutsche Bank is among a number of financial matters that could come under focus as his business activities are reviewed by special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, who is examining Kushner as part of a broader investigation into possible Russian influence in the election.

The October deal illustrates the extent to which Kushner was balancing roles as a top adviser to Trump and a real estate company executive. After the election, Kushner juggled duties for the Trump transition team and his corporation as he prepared to move to the White House. The Washington Post has reported that investigators are probing Kushner’s separate December meetings with the Russian ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak, and with Russian banker Sergey Gorkov, the head of Vnesheconombank, a state development bank.

The Deutsche Bank loan capped what Kushner Cos. viewed as a triumph: It had purchased four mostly empty retail floors of the former New York Times building in 2015, recruited tenants to fill the space and got the Deutsche Bank loan in a refinancing deal that gave Kushner’s company $74 million more than it paid for the property.

US-led strikes kill 300 civilians in Syria

Intensified coalition air strikes have killed at least 300 civilians in the Syrian northern city of Raqqa since March, as US-backed forces close in on the stronghold of Islamic State forces, UN war crimes investigators say.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a group of Kurdish and Arab militias supported by a US-led coalition, began to attack Raqqa a week ago to take it from the jihadists. The SDF, supported by heavy coalition air strikes, have taken territory to the west, east and north of the city.

Karen Abuzayd, an American commissioner on the independent panel, said on Wednesday: ‘We have documented the deaths caused by the coalition air strikes only and we have about 300 deaths, 200 in one place, in al-Mansoura, one village.’

Trump Revealed Top Secret Intel To Russia In Oval Office: Report

President Donald Trump disclosed “highly classified information” during a meeting with Russian officials last week, according to The Washington Post.

The revelations raise new questions about the already controversial meeting of Trump, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Sergey Kislyak, who is the Russian ambassador to the U.S. While such a disclosure is likely not illegal, it raises concerns about both the consequences of Trump’s ad hoc style when interacting with foreign leaders and U.S. coordination with other nations on sensitive foreign policy issues.

Trump revealed information to the Russian visitors that “jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State,” the Post reported Monday, citing current and former U.S. officials with ties to the administration. The publication did not elaborate on what the president’s disclosure entailed, due to its sensitive nature, but said the information came from a U.S. ally.

BuzzFeed later confirmed the report, adding that the Senate Intelligence Committee was also briefed on the disclosures. “It’s far worse than what has already been reported,” one official reportedly told the outlet.

(Several Senate Intelligence Committee members told NPR’s Scott Detrow they had not been briefed on the disclosure.)

A White House spokeswoman did not immediately return a request for comment on whether Trump shared classified information with the Russian officials. However, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said in a statement that Trump did not discuss sources, methods or military operations with Lavrov.

H.R. McMaster, Trump’s national security adviser, also disputed the report.

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers immediately voiced concern over the apparent intelligence disclosures.

“We have no way to know what was said, but protecting our nation’s secrets is paramount,” a spokesman for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said in a statement. “The speaker hopes for a full explanation of the facts from the administration.”

“If it’s true, I would say it’s disturbing,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told CNN Monday evening.

But McCain also told The Associated Press that Trump was within his rights to share the information.

North Korea ready for ‘big event’. Australian government concerned about war

NORTH Korea is ready to launch a nuclear test at its Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site, the 38 North monitoring group reported on Wednesday.

The 38 North analysis group described the test site as “primed and ready.”

“Commercial satellite imagery of North Korea’s Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Site from April 12 shows continued activity around the North Portal, new activity in the Main Administrative Area, and a few personnel around the site’s Command Center,” the North Korea-related analysis website said.

A barrage of recent North Korean missile tests has stoked US fears that Pyongyang may soon develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the US mainland.

There is speculation that the country could be preparing a missile launch, or even another nuclear test -— this would be its sixth — to mark the 105th birthday anniversary of its founder Kim Il-Sung on Saturday…
