Silverstone confirm break from #F1 contract from 2019: What does that mean for British GP future?

Silverstone’s owners have confirmed they have triggered the break clause in their contract to host the British GP. But what does that mean?

According to The British Racing Drivers’ Club, the break ‘means that unless a new contractual arrangement can be reached with Liberty, 2019 will be the last year that the British Grand Prix takes place at Silverstone – the only viable venue for a British GP.’

But while the BRDC will opt out of their current contract in 2019, that does not necessarily mean the iconic circuit will be gone from the F1 calendar forever.

Confused? Sky F1 has the answers…

Why have Silverstone broken their contract?
There is only one reason Silverstone have terminated their F1 contract early: costs. Put purely and simply, the terms of the 17-year contract they signed eight years ago have increasingly become too onerous for the BRDC, the circuit’s owners, to afford.

A five per cent fee escalator built into the deal means that what was a cost of £12m in 2010, has become £17m for 2017, and was set to exceed £27m by 2026…

Plane Almost Landed on SF Taxiway Could Have Been ‘Greatest Aviation Disaster in History’

A near-miss from an Air Canada flight heading to a taxiway at the San Francisco International Airport instead of the correct runway Friday night could have led to disaster.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is now investigating an incident where Air Canada flight 759 was diverted from landing on a taxiway — filled with four other planes fully loaded with passengers. The flight was cleared to land on the appropriate runway but had lined up with the taxiway parallel to it where the other planes sat.

An air traffic controller ordered the pilot to “go around,” and the plane ultimately landed at the airport with no incident.

“If it is true, what happened probably came close to the greatest aviation disaster in history,” retired United Airlines Capt. Ross Aimer, CEO of Air Consulting Experts, told the San Jose Mercury News.

“If you could imagine an Airbus colliding with four passenger aircraft wide bodies, full of fuel and passengers, then you can imagine how horrific this could have been,” he said.

Audio from the airport’s traffic control tower posted by the Mercury News shows how the incident unfolded, including a United Airlines pilot noting that “Air Canada flew directly over us.”

On the tape, one voice can be heard asking, “Where is this guy going? He’s on the taxiway.”

A statement from the FAA said that: “On Friday just before midnight, an Air Canada A320 was cleared to land on Runway 28R at San Francisco International Airport. However, the pilot inadvertently lined up for Taxiway C, which runs parallel to the runway. An air traffic controller sent the Air Canada jet around. The plane made another approach and landed without incident.”

Syrian Observatory says has ‘confirmed information’ that Islamic State chief killed

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Reuters on Tuesday that it had “confirmed information” that Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been killed.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said in June that it might have killed Baghdadi when one of its air strikes hit a gathering of Islamic State commanders on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Raqqa, but Washington said it could not corroborate the death and Western and Iraqi officials have been skeptical.

Reuters could not independently verify Baghdadi’s death.

“(We have) confirmed information from leaders, including one of the first rank, in the Islamic State in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zor,” the director of the British-based war monitoring group Rami Abdulrahman told Reuters.

Baghdadi’s death had been announced many times before but the Observatory has a track record of credible reporting on Syria’s civil war.

Abdulrahman said Observatory sources in Syria’s eastern town of Deir al-Zor had been told by Islamic State sources that Baghdadi had died “but they did not specify when”.

Six guilty of murdering Patrick Slater on Australia Day

FIVE young adults and one teenager accused of killing Patrick Slater in a violent 49-second mobbing after Australia Day celebrations have been found guilty of murder.

The accused, dubbed the “Patrick Slater slayers” by prosecutor Carmel Barbagallo, were charged after the 26-year-old was fatally stabbed in the early hours of January 27 last year.

After a six-week trial and a day and a half of deliberations, a jury today convicted Christopher Birdsall, Dylan Anthony, Robert Pickett and brothers Clinton and Stefan Mead of the charge.

An 18-year-old, who can not be named because he was aged 17 at the time, was also convicted of murder.

Prosecutors alleged the “slayers” murdered Mr Slater during a rolling brawl that ended with a short and violent mobbing at the Esplanade train station complex about 3.30am.

Mr Slater bled out quickly after someone plunged a weapon, likely a screwdriver, into his chest and through his aorta and lungs on the forecourt of the Ernst & Young building.

Eight people were charged in the months after the attack, including an 11-year-old boy who is being dealt with in Perth Children’s Court.

Another child, who was aged 14 at the time, stood trial with his co-accused for one day before the jury was told he would no longer be part of proceedings.

Mr Slater had been celebrating Australia Day with his sisters, his cousin Barney Brockman and Mr Brockman’s girlfriend.

Over a 45-minute period, they were involved in three violent fights with a group that initially included Birdsall, Pickett, three boys aged 17, 14 and 11 and their companions…

#F1 2017 could be a classic with three very different characters in title contention

The Austrian GP may not have been a classic race but the last few laps very much rewarded the patient. However, it’s becoming increasingly clear that 2017 could be a classic season for Formula 1.

What really struck me last weekend is just how different the three leading title contenders are. There’s always a lot of chat about F1 needing ‘characters’, but it’s hard to imagine three more divergent characters than Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas.

Each of them have their own strengths and weaknesses and it’s going to be fascinating to see how those different characteristics will play out through the rest of the season.

Let’s start with the title leader. Sebastian has a trait which I’ve seen in a number of champion drivers over the decades – namely, a total inability to accept they can be wrong and a conviction they are always right. Ayrton Senna had it, Michael Schumacher definitely had it, and Nigel Mansell too.

Even in the face of hard facts they never deviate from their inner self-belief. It’s a quality which marks them out as winners – although not always universally popular winners.

It was interesting to hear Vettel after the race complain about Bottas’ start without any irony or embarrassment in light of events in Baku…

Jeff Horn’s win over Manny Pacquiao the correct decision, WBO review confirms

The World Boxing Organisation’s review of the scoring in the Jeff Horn-Manny Pacquiao fight shows the Aussie was a deserving winner, and the judges got their decision right.

Horn was awarded the victory by a unanimous judges’ decision, but the result was not received well all over the world, and the Philippines government requested an official investigation.

The WBO obliged, setting up a panel of independent judges to review the fight and the scores recorded on the day, and the results are in — Horn is the rightful welterweight champion of the world…

16 believed dead in plane crash in the US “There’s a lot of ammo in the plane”

A US military C-130 Hercules transport aircraft has crashed into fields in Mississippi, with all 16 aboard believed killed.

Firefighters have told local media they had been forced back from the wreckage on several occasions due to ‘high intensity’ explosions.

A Mississippi State Trooper said the aircraft was ‘loaded with ammunition’.

“There’s a lot of ammo in the plane.”

The aircraft is believed to have exploded mid-air as wreckage has been found on both sides of the nearby Highway 82

The aircraft was reportedly last detected by air traffic control at a height of 20,000 feet (6km)

Sheriff Ricky Banks earlier told media his officers were searching for bodies and that no survivors were expected.

The US Marine Corps Twitter account posted that “A USMC KC-130 mishap occurred the evening of July 10. Further information will be released as available.”

Baby Driver leaves Fast + Furious in its dust with slick stunts + high-octane action

Baby Driver (MA15+)

Starring: Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Eiza Gonzalez, Flea, Sky Ferreira.

Rating: *****

The road goes on for revver … but where will it take him?

THIS is your cinematic traffic report for the week commencing Thursday July 13th.

Put your foot down and keep your eyes up, because all roads lead to Baby Driver.

If you think the Fast & Furious franchise is the last word in cars, crashes, chases and hi-octane heists, then this brilliant, dynamically creative movie is going to mow you down and make a mess of you.

For Baby Driver rewrites the four-wheeled film textbook on how to tear up tarmac with style, substance and spectacularly syncopated stunts that just never, ever let up.

Ansel Elgort (no longer to be remembered as the smug dreamboat in The Fault In Our Stars) has the title role of Baby, a highly skilled and decidedly enigmatic young getaway driver going nowhere until he completes one last job for big-time bank-robbing mastermind Doc (Kevin Spacey).

FBI: SWAT team arrested a soldier in Hawaii charged him with supporting ISIS

An FBI spokesman on Monday confirmed that a SWAT team arrested a soldier in Hawaii over the weekend and charged him with supporting ISIS.

FBI Honolulu spokesman Arnold Laanui confirmed the agents arrested Ikaika Erik Kang, a 34-year-old Army soldier stationed at Schofield Barracks on Saturday.
In a release, the FBI said it had worked closely with the Army in this case. The statement said the investigation by the FBI and the Army had been going on for more than a year.
The FBI said it believed he was a “lone actor” and that Kang was arrested for “providing material support” to ISIS.
Kang is an active duty Army air traffic control operator assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Wheeler Army Airfield in Hawaii. Kang’s service records showed he was deployed to Afghanistan from July 2013 to April 2014 and served in Iraq from March 2010 to February 2011. He has received a range of medals in the course of his service, including the Army Commendation Medal.
The criminal complaint filed against Kang alleged he swore allegiance to ISIS and tried to provide ISIS with both military documents and training. The complaint said Kang made threats and pro-ISIS arguments while in the Army and that his security clearance was revoked temporarily in response to those actions in 2012. The Army noted his apparent radicalization to the FBI last year. The complaint said after his arrest, Kang waived his Miranda rights and admitted he had pledged to join ISIS and attempted to aid the group.

Road rage driver ‘rams’ car in Northbridge #PERTH

MOTORIST has been charged with reckless driving after allegedly ramming another car head-on three times in Northbridge on Monday night.

The driver of a Holden Cruze was travelling east on James Street, near the intersection of William Street, at 6.10pm, when he recognised the driver of a Mitsubushi Lancer that was parked facing west.

The Cruze has allegedly rammed the Lancer head-on, while the Lancer driver tried to reverse backwards, damaging three cars.

The Lancer was struck twice more before both cars stopped and the drivers got out and confronted each other.

A 31-year-old man from North Perth was arrested and charged with reckless driving and being armed in a way that may cause fear.
