Clip of Stephen King adaptation shown at SXSW, leaves audience screaming – description

it-bill-skarsgaard-pennywise.jpgAlong with premiering The Disaster Artist, Song to Song, and Atomic Blonde, SXSW Film Festival has debuted the first trailer for Andrés Muschietti’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It. While no footage of Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise speaking was shown, audiences were introduced to each member of the Loser’s Club.

Thanks to Bloody Disgusting, who were in attendance, a description of the trailer has emerged, and it sounds as terrifying as expected.

“The trailer opens with footage of Bill Denbrough making a paper boat for his little brother Georgie. We then move outside, where Georgie is chasing his boat in a rainstorm as it floats next to the curb,” the description reads. “Suddenly, Georgie runs right into a street barrier, which knocks him down on the ground. He then watches as his boat sails into a gutter. He runs to the gutter and tries to see if he can see his boat. As he looks deep into the sewers, Pennywise abruptly appears before the screen cuts to black.”

Pirates Hijack Freighter off Somalia’s Coast

Somali officials say pirates have hijacked a ship off the coast of the Horn of Africa nation. It is thought to be the first hijacking of a large commercial vessel there in about three years.

One official in the semiautonomous state of Puntland said the incident occurred on Monday. The official said over two dozen men boarded the merchant ship off Somalia’s northern coast.

Another official in Puntland said the ship is a Sri Lankan-flagged freighter and was being moved toward the coast. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the press.

A spokeswoman for the European Union Naval Force operation off Somalia, Flt. Lt. Louise Tagg, confirmed that an incident involving an oil tanker had occurred off the coast of Somalia and an investigation was underway.

US to deploy missile-capable drones across border from North Korea

The US has declared it will permanently station missile-capable drones in South Korea in the latest round of military escalation in north-eastern Asia.

The drone deployment comes a week after North Korea carried out a test salvo of four missiles that landed off the coast of Japan, and a day before the US secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, embarks on a tour of a region widely regarded as the most dangerous corner of the world.

The US military in South Korea took the unusual step of publicly announcing the deployment of a company of Grey Eagle drones, which it said would add “significant intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability” for American and South Korean forces.

Grey Eagles are designed to carry Hellfire missiles and together with the deployment of Thaad anti-ballistic missile defences in South Korea they represent a significant build-up of US military muscle in response to an accelerated programme of missile and nuclear testing by the North Korean regime.

Pyongyang claims it has mastered the challenge of making a nuclear warhead small enough to put on the tip of a missile, and is working on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the continental US.

WA Nats Brendon Grylls concedes seat

West Australian Nationals leader Brendon Grylls has conceded defeat in his seat of Pilbara, following a $2 million campaign against him by the mining industry angry at his iron ore tax proposal.

“I can’t come back from this,” he told AAP on Tuesday.

He said he’d speak further about his loss next week, but now was “for the victor, not the loser”.

Mr Grylls had wanted to increase the 25 cent per tonne production rental fee on iron ore set for BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto in the 1960s to $5 a tonne to raise $7.2 billion over the next four years…

According to the ABC election website, Mr Grylls has suffered a 13.5 per cent swing against him and lost the seat to Labor’s Kevin Michel.

#F1 McLaren-Honda partnership on the line

McLaren’s long-term partnership with Honda is under threat as the Woking team could sever their relationship at the end of this season using a break clause.

Full of optimism at the launch of the McLaren-Honda’s MCL32, Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne’s aspirations have seemingly ground to a halt after a wretched pre-season.

Engine changes, closing in on double figures, coupled with more breakdowns than any other team meant McLaren covered the least number of laps in this year’s pre-season testing.

The Woking team managed just 425 laps, down on their 710 from 2016, and less than half of what Mercedes, at 1096 laps, achieved this year.

Reliability, though, is not the only concern.

The Honda engine is also lacking in power with only Sauber, who are running a 2016 engine, slower in testing.

“I don’t think we are too far back with the chassis, we have only one problem which is the power unit,” was Alonso’s assessment…
