#F1 #SpanishGPπŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ Mercedes break curfew to fix problems on Bottas’ car

Mercedes have broken an overnight curfew to fix an electrical problem on the power unit of Valtteri Bottas’s car.

They also discovered a water leak that led to an engine change, the Formula One champions said at the Spanish Grand Prix on Saturday.

Bottas won the previous race in Russia, the Finn’s first victory in F1.

In putting the engine back together, we have discovered a small water leak,’ a team spokesman said, adding that the engine had been replaced with the one used at the previous four rounds of the season.

‘We hope that he will be able to run at some point in third practice — the boys are working flat out on it to make that possible.’

The removed power unit will have the leak fixed and will be used at future races and as a spare.

Teams are not allowed to work on cars overnight for an eight-hour period, with two exceptions allowed per season. The governing FIA said Mercedes would not face any sanction since Friday night’s breach was their first of the campaign.

Mercedes dominated Friday’s free practice with triple champion Lewis Hamilton fastest in both sessions ahead of Bottas. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel leads the championship, 13 points clear of Hamilton.

McGowan in line for historic election win | Perth Now

Labor is predicted to win Saturday’s West Australian with one of the biggest electoral turnarounds in the state’s history.

Polls closed at 6pm, but it was already looking like Labor leader Mark McGowan, not two-term premier Colin Barnett, will be claiming victory later on Saturday night.

Mr McGowan had said on election eve that getting the 10 per cent swing needed to win the extra 10 seats to oust the two-term Barnett government was akin to climbing Mt Everest.

But opinion polls on Saturday, including a Nine/Galaxy exit poll taken of 18 seats, showed Labor would do that just.

Galaxy’s David Briggs said if the swing was uniform, Labor could get an extra 17 seats, but it was likely to get at least 13.

“I think the leadership is a significant issue,” he said, with Mr McGowan outpolling Premier Colin Barnett 45-33 as preferred premier.
