Two explosions reported at flooded Texas chemical plant

Local emergency officials have reported two explosions at a flooded chemical plant in the Texas town of Crosby, its operators Arkema Inc said.

“At approximately 2 am CDT (0700 GMT), we were notified by the Harris County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) of two explosions and black smoke coming from the Arkema Inc plant in Crosby, Texas,” the company statement said.

As a precautionary measure officials had already ordered the evacuation of an area within 1.5 miles (three kilometres) of the organic peroxides plant, which operators had said was at risk of exploding due to a “critical issue” triggered by monster storm Harvey’s torrential rains.

Former Thai minister jailed for 42 years for falsifying rice deals with China

BANGKOK (Reuters) – A Bangkok court sentenced a former Thai commerce minister to 42 years in jail on Friday after finding him guilty of falsifying government-to-government rice deals between Thailand and China.

The verdict in the case against Boonsong Teriyapirom comes hours after former Thai prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra failed to show up at the Supreme Court for the verdict in a negligence case brought against her over the same rice scheme which her government introduced in 2011.

Sources close to Yingluck, who was ousted by a military coup in 2014, said on Friday that the former prime minister had fled Thailand. The Supreme Court on Friday issued an arrest warrant for Yingluck.

“Boonsong is sentenced to 42 years in prison,” a judge said, handing down the verdict.

Thailand’s anti-graft commission said the deals announced by Boonsong had caused “huge losses” to the state and that rice was sold locally and not exported, as claimed by Yingluck’s government.

Sydney father accused of pointing gun at 4yo daughter and pulling trigger

A Sydney man who has been charged over an illegal firearms cache pointed a high-calibre pistol at his daughter and pulled the trigger before letting her play with the gun, police allege.

Detectives have charged the 32-year-old man from the southern Sydney suburb of Revesby over the alleged incident as well as an illegal firearms cache and the production and possession of child abuse material.

He was charged with six offences by officers from Strike Force Bowser which is a NSW Terrorism Investigation Squad, however police said the investigation was not terrorism related.

Police said they seized a 25-calibre Walther TP-model pistol, two Colt 1911 45-calibre pistols and a Bentley-brand 12-gauge shotgun from premises at Revesby and Granville.

During the investigation, police said they also accessed mobile phone video footage which allegedly showed the man skylarking with one of the Colt .45 handguns, pointing it at his young daughter and pulling the trigger.

Officers said the weapon did not discharge.

The images also allegedly showed the man pointing the shotgun at the phone camera.

Detectives said further footage showed the child playing with the automatic pistol and pulling the trigger, without effect.

Senior police have condemned the alleged behaviour.

Russia successfully tests ‘unstoppable’ 4,600mph hypersonic weapon

The Zircon cruise missile travels between 3,800mph and 4,600mph – five to six times the speed of sound – and puts Russia ‘half a decade’ ahead of the US’, the report says.

This makes it faster than any anti-missile system, including those that are expected to appear in the next two decades.

All the available information about Zircon is based on rare comments from Russian officials and media leaks, which were not played down by the military and defense experts.

Dmitry Kornev, editor of Militaryrussia.ru, which collected the most complete profile on the Zircon missile, told RBTH that he believes the missiles were already launched from a Yasen-class attack submarine.

Donald Trump just got humiliated in first big poll since he came to power

jon-ossoff.jpgCritics say Donald Trump has been left humiliated by a strong Democratic performance in a special election vote that was seen as indicative of support for his presidency. Though he narrowly failed to secure an outright first round win, Democratic hopeful Jon Ossoff claimed his 48.1 per cent was a “victory for the ages” in the Atlanta congressional race.

Against a field of 18 candidates, including 11 Republicans, Mr Ossoff outperformed polls in Georgia’s traditionally Republican 6th Congressional District.

But he came just short of the 50 per cent he needed to make it into Congress without a run-off, allowing Mr Trump himself to claim the result was a “big ‘R’ win”.

In June, Mr Ossoff will go head-to-head with Republican candidate Karen Handel, who won just 19.8 per cent of the vote. Republican voters are expected to rally around their last remaining candidate, presenting a greater challenge to the Democrat hopeful.

But Mr Ossoff was undeterred. “This is already a victory for the ages,” he told supporters. “We have defied the odds, we have shattered expectations.”

Nearly 200 firefighters battle blaze at an LA warehouse

Crews of firefighters spent hours battling a blaze at a industrial site after a gas leak caused flames to rip through the building.

Around 170 firefighters fought the fire at the food processing plant, Proportion Foods, in South Los Angeles, California.

Flames were so high that crew were forced to attack the blaze from across the road, with trucks lining the streets and even parking in nearby sports fields.

‘Some explosions have been heard which are likely propane tanks on forklifts inside the structure.’
