Qld Logan Hospital CCTV shows Woman tackled by security guard while trying to leave

The ABC has obtained footage of a hospital patient being tackled to the ground by a private security guard, resulting in a deep gash to the woman’s head.

Key points:

  • CCTV footage shows Toni Burcher being slammed into a lift doorway during an attempt to exit Logan Hospital
  • Ms Burcher said she tried to leave after becoming distressed during questioning about her mental health condition
  • Acting director of Logan-Bayside Health Network said the security guard responsible lost his balance

Toni Burcher, who has a mental illness, was attempting to leave Logan Hospital, near Brisbane, with her husband when security guards blocked their way.

“They rushed at Toni and they tackled her backwards,” her husband Robert Cowling said.

“She goes flying backwards and hits her head up against the corner of the concrete wall, splits her head open. She started screaming out in agony and pain straight away.”

CCTV footage shows Ms Burcher being slammed into the edge of a lift doorway near the carpark.

The impact left a six-centimetre gash in her head, which required staples.

“When I look at the vision I’m thankful I was not injured more,” Ms Burcher said.

Pauline Hanson: Parents react to call to remove children with disabilities from classrooms

Parents of children with special needs have reacted strongly to Pauline Hanson’s controversial calls for them to be removed from mainstream classrooms, with many calling the comments “offensive”.

They say while schools do need more resources to help children with disabilities, Senator Hanson’s claims the education of other children is suffering are unwarranted.

They argue that rather than disadvantaging their classmates by monopolising teachers’ time, children with special needs actually enrich the learning environment.

But some say mainstream schools simply cannot cope with the demands of children with special needs.

‘I want my son to have an impact’

Annette McLaren’s son Scott, 9, has Asperger’s. He attends a mainstream state school in Sydney.

Ms McLaren said she encountered some resistance from other parents at the school who were concerned about the disruption he may cause in the classroom.

She recognised children with special needs can take up more of the teachers’ time and their behaviour can often be disruptive. But she argued all children benefited from diversity in the classroom, which added “strength and richness” to their education.

Australian of the Year finalist stole hundreds of thousands in public money, inquiry hears

An Australian of the Year finalist and migrant women’s rights campaigner rorted hundreds of thousands of dollars of government money, a corruption inquiry hears.

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is investigating allegations Eman Sharobeem misused a credit card and submitted invoices for money she was not entitled to when she was CEO of the Immigrant Women’s Health Service (IWHS) and the Non-English Speaking Housing Women’s scheme (NESH).

Both were non-profit groups funded by the New South Wales Government.

She is also accused of lying about having psychology degrees to further her career.

The Counsel Assisting the inquiry, Ramesh Rajalingam, said the alleged corrupt conduct occurred in the 10 years prior to 2016.

He said it related to hundreds of thousands of dollars, including around $400,000 for shopping and personal services.

“They were both organisations originally set up to provide funding and support to essentially women and children from disadvantaged and low socio-economic groups,” he said.

Stolen funds spent on ‘jewellery, clothing’, inquiry hears

The inquiry heard that between 2009 and 2015, reimbursements of more than $400,000 were made to Ms Sharobeem’s personal accounts from IWHS.

They were for groceries, men’s products, jewellery, clothing, hair and beauty services, penalty notices and State Debt Recovery Office enforcement orders.

The receipts she sought reimbursement for were from Harvey Norman, Bing Lee, Eye Concept, Andrews Designer Jewellery, Eternity Jewellers, Lily Room Cosmetics, S&S Hair & Beauty, IKEA, David Jones, Myer, Bonnyrigg Garden Centre and also for dental work.

“Public funds were effectively used for the purchase of a Mercedes Benz registered in the name of Ms Sharobeem’s husband Haiman Hammo,” the Counsel Assisting told the inquiry.

Ms Sharobeem also allegedly used a IWHS credit card for payments to Fitness First, Lite ‘N’ Easy and Foxtel for herself or family members.

“She also used the IWHS credit card to make payments to Sydney Water for services connected to a number of properties she opened,” Mr Rajalingam said.

He said the money included reimbursements “even where retailers had refunded the amount”.

He said that in addition to her salary, Ms Sharobeem fraudulently claimed around $100,000 in facilitation fees from IWHS and NESH and she submitted false time sheets in made-up names.

She is also accused of authorising payments to accounts in the names of her sons, Charlie and Richard Sharobeem.

Home renovated with public money, inquiry hears

The inquiry heard Ms Sharobeem used more than $52,000 in government money to renovate her Fairfield home which she purchased in 2011 for $660,000 and sold for $1.3 million in 2016.

In addition, Ms Sharobeem is accused of falsifying health services statistics to get more government funding and dishonestly authorising substantial payments from NESH to her own accounts….

Ben Stiller raised over $1million for starving Somalis

Ben Stiller’s a big star with an even bigger heart.

Friday, the 51-year-old comedian helped raise over $1million dollars in under 24-hours to help Somalis facing starvation.

The Zoolander actor teamed up with Jerome Jarre of Vine and Snapchat fame to ask Turkish Airline for help sending resources to the hungry country.

Quickly the stars were able to raise heaps of money to support the campaign, but most exciting of all was their response from Turkish Airlines, who was totally on board with Jarre’s outlandishly caring plan.

With the help of NFL star Colin Kapernick, YouTuber Casey Neistat, and all of their caring followers, Ben and Jerome got the airliner to promise one of their cargo aircrafts to send food to the African nation.
