Have you ever wanted to name a public landmark in Melbourne? Well, here is your chance.
The Victorian Government has asked the public to name five new railway stations to be built as part of the $11 billion Melbourne Metro Rail Tunnel project.
The stations, which will be built under Melbourne’s inner city, have the current working titles of Arden, Parkville, CBD North, CBD South and Domain.
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said Victorians could enter a competition for their chance to pick a name.
“We’re really keen to get ideas from everyone from across the state,” she said.
“Consideration will be given to geography, to Melbourne’s heritage, whether that’s Indigenous heritage, cultural heritage, and other considerations like big landmarks in those local areas.”
Boaty McBoatface was the famous moniker chosen by the public to name a British research ship last year, but the UK Government decided on RRS Sir David Attenborough.
When the public was asked to vote on the name of an express train in Sweden, Trainy McTrainface topped the poll.
Ms Allan said she wanted people to take the competition seriously when asked by reporters what would happen if Victorians made a suggestion like “Station McStationface”.
