London Bridge attack: Terror incident leaves up to seven feared dead after van ploughs into pedestrians

A GANG of five terrorists drove a B&Q van into pedestrians at 50mph on London Bridge before attacking revellers with hunting knives. Up to seven people were feared dead and 20 hurt in the 10pm …

The gang had metal canisters strapped to their chests and two were gunned down – believe killed – by armed police, witnesses said.

Another three were thought to be still on the run as the police have confirmed that the attacks in London Bridge and Borough Market are “terror incidents.”

One bystander is believed to have been shot in the head by crossfire.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed a third incident in the Vauxhall area, after tweeting “you must run, hide and tell,” which later turned out to be an unrelated stabbing.

Fifty armed police have stormed Monument station with police dogs and have told people to run. The travel hub along with nearby Bank station, both across the river from London Bridge, have been closed.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said the “terrible incident” is being treated as a  “potential act of terrorism”.

London attacks: ‘multiple casualties’ after incidents at London Bridge, Vauxhall and Borough Market

Armed police respond to serious incidents in three locations in the capital – London Bridge, Vauxhall and Borough Market

Guardian journalist Kate Lyons has more on the evacuations going on in the area around London Bridge:

Guests at hotels in the vicinity of the attack have been evacuated. Zaven Jordan who is visiting from Australia was staying in Novotel Southwark and was woken by a fire alarm.

When guests assembled outside the hotel he said police told everyone to run.

“The police didn’t just give directions, they were yelling run,” he said. “When a fire alarm goes off you expect to assemble and then go back inside in a few minutes. We grabbed our passports just in case, but we weren’t really ready for this.”

He is now walking the streets trying to find somewhere to stay. He says the hotel is not answering their phone, he had been turned away by another hotel and he is uncertain where in the city it is safe to go…

Champions League final: Real Madrid beats Juventus 4-1, Cristiano Ronaldo scores double

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid beat Juventus 4-1 in a superb Champions League final in Cardiff, as the Spaniards won the title for the third time in four years and 12th in all.

Ronaldo swept in a neat opener after 20 minutes but Mario Mandzukic hit a deserved equaliser for Juventus with a spectacular effort seven minutes later.

Real, however, took command in the second half and a long-range deflected effort by Casemiro after 60 minutes, a neat finish by the irrepressible Ronaldo and an 89th minute tap-in for substitute Marco Asensio settled one of the most entertaining finals of recent years.

It was Real’s 12th title in its 15th final, as it became the first team to successfully defend it in the Champions League era. AC Milan was the last to retain Europe’s top prize when it won in 1989 and 1990…

Australian sovereignty under threat from influence of China’s Communist Party

The defence and intelligence community believes that attempts by the Chinese Communist Party to exert its influence in Australia pose a direct threat to our nation’s liberties and its sovereignty.

That fear has been confirmed by a five-month-long Four Corners-Fairfax investigation which shows Beijing is active across a vast array of fronts — from directing Chinese student associations, threatening Australian-based Chinese dissidents, seeking to influence academic inquiry, co-opting community groups and controlling most Chinese-language media…
